Strength:

excellent CD and audio performance. lovely display.

Weakness:

very vulnerable to summer heat

i paid too much for this excellent product when it just came out. i also did not shop around properly. anyway, now i need a spare part: a face- plate ribbon cable (CNP3847). anyone know where i can get this part? also, i never was able to use RDS or TA. anyone know where i can use it? lastly, when i used it in my car in summer in VA, the CD player seems to have gotten screwed. the CD will not rotate at all. anyone know how to handle this? my advice: shop around after waiting for prices to fall. also, avoid too much heat. thank you in advance, Aaron

Strength:

power, display, flexable outputs, reliability

Weakness:

over 3 years track forward button is hard to use, display is hard to see in the sun

I have had this stereo headunit in two cars now, and I absolutly love it. It is fun to use, lots of gadgets, sub output, many differant settings, and the RDS system is awesome, everyone I know offers to buy it, because it is truely unique.

Model Reviewed: 1997 DEH-835R

Strength:

- 3 Pre-amp outputs with flexible control. - Superb tuner with RDS+ID-Logic - Built-in Subwoofer controls

Weakness:

- Display washed out in the sunlight - No CD-Text support

This was my second CD head unit I personally owned (installed and used over 15 different ones for my friends). I had an older Pioneer CD unit that worked well so I stuck with them. This had everything I needed: 3 pre-amp outputs, RDS, ID-Logic (which was great when trying to find radio stations on long trips), CD-player, and subwoofer controls. I only recently replaced it with a Pioneer DEH-7400MP because I wanted MP3 playback. Overall it was the best CD player I could get for the money.

Strength:

All those features.

Weakness:

Impossible to read at direct sunlight.

Got this player from my uncle for a joke price, when he was selling his car and the new car he was buying had an integrated hi-power sound system. It was really a great deal, I had an old cassette player in my car before this cool player.

Strength:

Cool looking display, like the full fold down face plate.

Weakness:

Display hard to read in sunlight. The 1/2 volt pre amp output was a little low for me.

Paid around 300 online, Loved the unit. Never had any problems with it, i just decided to upgrade to the 900r cause I got money and wanted the EQ features, plus the motorized face plate. I reccomend the unit to anyone who likes a busy display. I really enjoyed the cd player.

Strength:

Large display, spectrum analyzer, amount of control of audio

Weakness:

If you use the front and rear outputs as inputs the built in amp turns OFF! (I was trying to add my minidisc)

No CDTEXT, no longterm name battery backup. (disconnect the battery program all your discs back in the head unit)

Glare on screen

This unit was state of the art when I bought it. Now I'm itching to replace it with a cdtext unit. The 9200 looks like it's overpriced just for the display. I may just get it though. The only thing I really don't like about the unit is it's lack of cdtext support. I want to be able to make a disc or buy one and stick it in and have all the tracks show up. Then no naming at all! This is one of the old style pioneer units too. I like it better than the new ones. The new ones all look about the same. The DEH 835 was unique.

Strength:

many features, good looks

Weakness:

horrible glare on display cover, basically unreadable during daytime

Overall, I am very pleased with this stereo. It does have horrible glare on the display, perhaps the display should light up whiter or brighter to remedy this. I believe it has been discontinued, but if you can pick one up, by all means do so. Crystal clear sound when combined with aftermarket components and subwoofer. Also, nice subwoofer frequency controls built in.

The 835R was definetely a test bed for the 8000R. The add-on DSP is a joke, as the controls are very hard to use, along with the display of the DSP settings being horrible. The DEQ-9200 was definetely a better product, if you must have it all in one unit..then get the DEX-P1R.
The screen on the 835R was also a joke, horrible glare from light. The visual EQ was also way to simple and definetely uninforming (once again, comparing to the DEQ-9200 which had an EXCELLENT visual EQ/RTA).

Overtime the volume controls also become unresposive (the actual physical pushing of the buttons). I've seen this on 2 different units actually.

The unit also did sound a bit boomy and bright with the Loudness turned on (at higher volumes)

This is an awesome head unit.
The built-in amp is rated at 35x4. This sounds great, but it distorted my MB-Quarts really bad- I put in an Orion amp which sounds 1000x better than the built in amp.

This head unit has treble, midrange, and bass controls, which I defintely recommend over just treble and bass controls. The deck has a loudness control which makes the deck sound awesome at low volume levels (way too boomy at high volume)

This deck has three sets of RCA preouts (sub, front, rear) and the front and rear can be used as INPUTS- very useful for my MINIDISK player!

The only disadvantage I've found is the low pre-out voltage- 100mV. I haven't had ANY problems with noise, but at this low of a voltage, noise is a definite possibility.
