The 4Runner is Toyota’s midsize SUV that has retained its exceptional off-road capability, but has also evolved into a vehicle that offers many different variations including 7-passenger seating, luxury amenities and an optional V8 engine. The original 4Runner that was introduced as a 1985 model was really a version of the Toyota pickup with a removable hardtop and extra seat. The fourth-generation 4Runner which debuted as a 2003 model retains its original high-level of off-road capability, but also includes room, power, and luxury.
Summary: I have owned this vehicle for almost 6 years. I bought it with 150,000 miles on it. 1 month after I bought it the engine blew. I had it replaced with a Jasper rebuilt engine. 6 months later the transmission went. I had a used one put in. After that the repairs were constant. I have replaced brake rotors, front axles, rear axles, transmission lines, brake lines, you name it, I've replaced it. It has been completely mechnically rebuilt. It has an oil pan leak. Uses 1 qt oil per month. I have about $7000 to $8000 worh of repairs in it, not including the purchase price. I have $14,000 in a vehicle that is now not worth $2000, since it has blown the head gasket AGAIN in the Jasper rebuilt engine which is 3 years old and has 75,000 miles on it(already out of warranty). If I knew then, what I know now, I would have NEVER bought this vehicle! It has been nothing but an unreliable money pit. A good vehicle for people with money to burn. I doubt I will ever buy another Toyota. I'm now out car shopping for another vehicle because I refuse to sink any more money in to this one.
Strengths: I loved my Four Runner! I loved all the room in it. I could fold down the back seats for camping and sleep in it. Most comfortable vehicle for camping.
Weaknesses: Poor gas mileage, 17 MPG. Constantly broke. Repairs ran me broke, gas prices ran me broke. Such a shame as I really liked the vehicle.
Similar Products Used: None. Had a 1987 Dodge D50 Ram pick up truck that is STILL going, and going, and going! I think I am going back to Mitsubischi products.

Summary: I bought this truck with 11,000 miles on it. It has 60,000 on it now. All you have to do is change the oil and put gas in it. The V8 has great power, I tow a 4 place snowmobile trailer and you will forget its behind you if you don't check your mirrors. Speaking of mirrors it has two in the back that you can see through your rear view mirror and see the hitch. You can hook up the trailer all by yourself without a problem. I had a 2000 4 runner and that was a grat truck as well never had a problem after putting over 70,000 miles on it. If reliability and resale value are important to you...buy a Toyota.
Strengths: Engine, all wheel drive, comfort, reliability, resale value.
Weaknesses: Gas milage (V6 isn't any better either) I average 17. Don't believe the computer, it always says around 19. Do the math. Stereo isn't anywhere near as good as my Audi. Windows rattle when they are not full up or full down.

from Lithia Toyota
Year / Model Reviewed: 2007 Sport Edition 4x4 v6
Summary: It's an overall great SUV. Solid acceleration (you won't be disappointed with the v6) and the stability controls work very well. A lot of room in the backseat for larger passengers. Looks very good with the hood scoop.
Strengths: Great engine. I've also been really impressed with the stability controls. When accelerating in the rain or wet patches on the road the car will correct itself instead of leaving you spun out on the side of the road. Same goes for breaking hard in the rain!
Weaknesses: Gas mileage could be better, but it is an SUV. Letting off the gas can give you some serious differences in mpg. I pushed it hard on its first few tanks and was averaging about 15.5 mpg city. Once I got it out of my system and started driving more normal the gas mileage started averaging about 18-19 mpg city. Highway is an easy 22 mpg.

Summary: This is my 2nd Toyota 4runner. My first was a new 2003 that was a complete lemon. The sunroof broke twice with 6 months. The dealearship totally messed up my headliner each time they tried to fix the sunroof. Eventually, after much frustration, the dealer did buy the 2003 back from me and gave me a brand new 2004 for the same payment.
However, the 2004 has been a disappointment. It is a rattle trap. Rattles in the ceiling, Rattles in the rear.. I can barely stand driving it without having the music turned up. And the colder it is, the worse it gets.
Other than the rattle and poor paint quality I do like the ride and all the other features. But for a 40K vehicle, I expect much better build quality from Toyota.
Strengths: Ride, engine, handling
Weaknesses: Rattle Trap....
Has Toyota lost their quality??
