Expert Review: 2009 Acura RL
Expert Rating: 4.5 stars

"The 2009 Acura RL splits that difference as well as any car I've driven, setting a standard for 'grin-inducing performance in the twisties while still remaining a totally practical everyday driver."

Price Paid:  $45000.00 from Tustin Acura

Year / Model Reviewed:
2008 RL - tech package

Strengths:
the look is nice

Weaknesses:
MPG is about 13 in the city. Car is full of defect.

Summary:
RL tech is full of defects. Stay away from it...
I bought the car on 4/3/2008, and as of today 5/17/2008, I found myself bringing the car for repair more than 1/2 the time I own it. There are several defects that the dealership fixed such as part failure underneath the seat, noise coming from the column on the right etc. yet, there is at least one "major" manufacturing defect. The windshield
"moves" making the car unsafe. The rattling noise of the windshield banging against the car structure is loud and noticeable even when the car is stationary. As for my car, dealer has to remove the windshield, the headligner etc and still trying to figure out problem and fixing it. honda don't care about customers, they really did not take any action after weeks of contacting.

Review 3 of 64

Price Paid:  $27000.00 from NJ

Year / Model Reviewed:
2005 rl

Strengths:
Amount of features, particularly compared to similarly priced vehicles. Outstanding gas mileage, great handling, good acceleration, quiet and very comfortable ride.

Weaknesses:
More XM presets than just 12 needed...how about another 6-12. Car can be a little slow off the gun, but gets going quickly.

Summary:
I bought a used 05 RL about a month ago. 43000 miles on it, paid 26,995 and bought the bumper to bumper 7yr/100000k warranty for an extra $900.

Can't say enough good things about this car. Handles great, very good acceleration, quiet, but still leaves you in touch with the road. Electronics are a bit overwhelming, but they all work well and over time suspect I will learn them better. Wish it had more than 12 xm presets. Gas mileage is phenominal, got 30 mpg on a 400 mile highway trip on 89 octane gas. have been averaging 25 city/suburban. I don't drive it hard, but the trick is to quickly get the car into 5th gear and ride it down to about 37-40, which keeps rpms around 1500 or slightly lower. Styling on outside is a little bland, but not bad, interior is superb!

Most people that have sat in this car have commented that it's as nice as mercedes/BMw's they've sat it.

Review 4 of 64

Price Paid:  $45000.00 from Acura of Denville (D

Year / Model Reviewed:
2005 Acura RL

Strengths:
Power adequate. Smart appearance. Comfortable seating. Handles well. Voice activation impressive. Navigation powerful once you learn it.

Weaknesses:
Noisy with lots of squeaks and rattles and wind noise that nobody can fix. Reminds one more of a New York City taxi cab than a 50K luxury car.....poorly designed: for example keyless entry. Sounds good, but if you lock something in you still need the key WITH YOU to get in... zero trunk space. Zero customer care. Dealers could care less. Heqdquarters couldn't give a rats behind whether you are happy either.

Summary:
Overall a big waste of money. If you like overpaying for cars with obvious faults and like to have no customer care from either the dealer or the company, then the Acura RL is the car for you.

Review 5 of 64

Price Paid:  $0.00 from West Side Acura

Year / Model Reviewed:
2003 Acura 3.5 RL

Strengths:
The exquisite camphorwood trim designed by Tendo, whose work is displayed in the New York Museum Of Modern Art. The sound system is comparable to a $10,000 Quad (Acoustical Manufacturing) Electrostatic home system. This car does not offend and provoke less fortunate people (as the BMW's and Mercedes do). The timeless, classic styling. No discernable difference between 87 and 92 octane performance. The silky, smooth, quiet, fluid, drive train. 0 defects at delivery and 30 day usage point. The most solid feeling exterior door handles. Made in Sayama Japan, (one of the top 3 auto manufacturing facilities in the world) etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum.

Weaknesses:
Dash mounted cd changer (now done for 2004) Upgrade the steering wheel audio and cruise control switches. The present ones are from the Plebian Honda parts bin. The ignition switch has at least 40 degrees of unnecessary travel. iVTEC for improved fuel efficiency. (now at 12.8L/100km city but improving steadily as break-in progresses).

Summary:
We've only had our new 2003 for a month now but it's been sublime! This car was not built nor manufactured it was DESIGNED and ENGINEERED! Upon reading the manual I learned there was a little hidden drawer for coins and sundry objects on the left side of the cockpit (yes it feels like a Lear jet). When I found this little box and activated it I was surprised that it slid out perfectly on some kind of spring actuated hydraulic feeling mechanism! I was once more stunned when I brushed my finger on the bottom of the little drawer! They had gone to the trouble of lining it with velvet velour! From this minor accessory example you can easily extrapolate what care and thought went into the primary and secondary systems of this Automotive Masterpiece!
