from - Year / Model Reviewed: 1996 Century Summary: Got it when it had about 73,000 miles and now has 101,000. Haven't had to do anything to it EXCEPT: Replace the radiator, alternator bearings, two serpentine belts, belt tensioner, broken engine mount (requires dropping the "K-frame"), brakes, hood support, water pump, two window motors, a turn signal switch and a tie rod end. It has idled rough since I got it and nothing helps. For most of the time the engine has made "rackety-tackety-tackety" noises when started up cold only they kept getting louder. At low speeds driving near sound-reflective surfaces you can hear loose engine parts running into each other. The A/C quit working and there's oil in the coolant. Leaks oil badly around the manifold gasket and you have to take everything off to get at it. It's a gas hog and though power is adequate there's a delay before it comes on. Also it's hard to work on. Did I mention the paint is also shot for no good reason?
On the plus side, the seats are fairly comfortable, and the transmission is still in good shape. And the car's 3700 LB. weight probably saved me from serious injury when somebody plowed into it on the freeway. (And that was the end of it, a total loss. Rust in peace.)
Recommended only for professional mechanics who need something to do or rich people who want to support them, or people who get in wrecks a lot. Strengths: Adequate power (eventually), fairly comfortable seats, can probably cram six people in, lots of trunk room. Weaknesses: Gas consumption, mechanical problems, paint
