Model Reviewed: Neon Sport 4-door sedan

Strength:

Peppy, attractive Flame Red paint, great handling, comfy front seats.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage, cheap feeling door panels and console, rough ride, crappy A/C, cheap water based paint that chipped if you looked at it hard.

I owned a four-door Neon Sport. I had problems with it about two months after I bought it. First, the engine mounts came loose, causing annoying squeaking noises when I drove over bumps. Then after I had a car alarm installed, the power door lock system died, and every time I replaced a fuse for it, it would blow out. Then the factory stereo went - sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Right after my full warranty expired, my A/C seized up. After that, major electrical problems.

You'd have thought that I would have learned my lesson from the disaster that was my Plymouth Sundance, but noooooooooooooo! My Neon slowly deteriorated. I had it for eight years, until my alternator died for the second time and the cops towed it away - I am grateful to them for it. I never saw it again.

I had an '89 Sundance before this that fell apart after three years - never, ever buy Chrysler cars, no matter how hot they look.

Strength:

*Great gas mileage (although to be honest, as it ages, the gas mileage is not as good as it once was, but still much better than a SUV or large sedan). *Sporty. *Easy to maneuvre. *Great value for the money. *Even for repairs that may come up, parts are common and inexpensive; also replacing tires is relatively inexpensive. *Long Life= 240,000+ miles! (can you believe it?!)

Weakness:

*It's a small car, which is bothersome for larger people or people who have a problem getting down into such a low car. *It really doesnt seat more than 4 people comfortably.
*Also, forgot to mention, some tubes that go to the gas tank had dry-rotted and I had a gas leak, this was probably the only major scary problem I've had. I imagine if I had a regular mechanic it could have been spotted in advance, but instead I had to take it in immediately to be fixed. could have been dangerous but ended up being like a $100 repair. So big deal to me, but not to my wallet. occured probably close to the 200,000 mile mark.

This is the only car I have ever had because it has lasted me for so long. Yes, it is still running and has over 240,000 miles on it!! When I take it in to be serviced (regularly- as seems to be the key to keeping it running so well), the mechanics literally do not believe that my car has so many miles on it for such good condition. Of course I have had some repairs over the years but nothing major (nothing costing over $300 dollars or so at any time). The air conditioning went out a few years ago (probably around the 140,000 mile mark) and attempts at fixing it have proven merely temporary. Also the horn went out about 2 years ago, but I never bothered to fix that. Other minor complications have been easy repairs. I bought the car initially as a teenager because it was in my price range and could not be happier with my purchase! I would strongly consider buying another Neon, although I have been told that the newer ones are not made-to-last like the older cars were. I would actually probably buy another 1995 Neon if I can find one with low mileage. I love this car because it has been consistently reliable. I dunno if my good luck is the standard, but I do know that regular tune-ups are the key and that the older vehicles were built more durable than cars nowadays. So I would highly recommend a well-maintained 1995 Neon to anyone I know.

good power (when it runs)

Weakness:

breaks down frequently

This car is the worst car you could possibly buy. Ive had this car sense it was brand new and it has been nothing but trouble. It breaks down constantly the things that have had to be replaced are head gasket, sensor, timming belts, and many others. The car now frequently turns of for no reason and the check engine light comes on ive taken it to several mechanics and none of them can tell me whats wrong with this car. So basically at this point its worthless because theres always the risk of geting stranded. So let me give anyone considering buying this car some advice Dont!

Strength:

Well, they still have it, so it still works. That counts for something. A fairly good car for new drivers, size-wise. Handles pretty well, though the steering wheel was just a bit too floaty for me.

Weakness:

Things are constantly going wrong. I believe the headgasket is a huge problem in this model. Very cramped, and the seat sits too low, at a scoop angle which can be uncomfortable. After driving for a while my back would start aching.

This is my parents car, but I used it all the time when I first got my license. It is a horrible investment, because it becomes an INVESTMENT. There have been a number of things that have gone wrong, and cost to be fixed is great. My parents have put so much money into it that I have no doubt when all is said and done, they have doubled the original buying price. Though to be fair, the last repair was mostly for things the previous repair man had fouled up.

Chevy Cavalier (my car), which is a huge step up. Hyundai Accent (also my car) which handles just a little bit better, and even though smaller in size, has more cabin room, and the best driver seat I have ever placed my fanny on.

Has great pick up. And good gas mileage

Weakness:

JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!! Head gaskets are bad, interior lights at the speedometer blink. And the switchs on the back doors are plastic, so they are constantly getting stuck. The car will drain you financially due to all the repairs you have to make.

This is my 2nd Neon,(STUPID). I guess I didnt learn the first time. This car is the biggest joke ever! I am having to get my head gasket replaced. ANd now because of all the blowback of the oil, my trany has to be cleaned out and my clutch has to be replaced also! Also the interior lights at the speedometer blink on and off and from high to low. I am told that they only way to fix this problem is to replace the turn signal/light switch. Due to there is a short inside the switch itself. The switch on the back doors also have been replaced and now have to be replaced again! Where they are plastic and are JUNK they get stuck inside and now my interior light that comes on when you opent he door comes on and off constantly!! And that is when the door is closed!! They only way to get that fixed is to get them replaced. And the other neon that I had was a 1996 and I had to get the head gasket on that on done also! they both went bad around 50k to 55k miles. My advice to anyone reading this thinking about buying a Neon is.... DONT!!!!! They are JUNK and you will dump more money into them than they are worth!!! Dont waste your money on a crystler/dodge vehicle.

Engine Transmission shifts roughly Poorly built Slow,no pick up at all Famous for the blown head gasket Everything Else.

One word : JUNK. Major engine problems, transmission poorly built. At 55000 miles the head gasket went.Speedometer stopped working.Heat didn't work, air conditioning sucked, when it rained it rained in my car,Was told by a PLYMOUTH dealer that when the car was built, they must have missed the seals, which caused the rain to enter the car.Brakes had to be replaced three different times, all within three months of each other.Brakes sqeaked when it was damp out side, also electric problems, dimming lights and all, would show up when the air was damp. These cars are poorly built and it shows.Don't waste your money on this crap, and don't be fooled by it's looks either.Just an all around waste of money, these cars should be destroyed.(not kidding)

Strength:

Good acceleration for a small car. 132HP impressive. Good on gas ( I still get about 30-32MPG despite having 125K )

Weakness:

Head gasket defect. You sit very low to the ground. No (right) arm rest for longer trips. No internal trunk or gas popper ( I'm finding this to be the case with many later model cars)

Head Gasket and Head Gasket. Had it replaced twice since I bought this car in '96. The first time was at 57K and the second at 114K ( see a pattern ?)Needless to say I'll be getting rid of this car before 171K. If you're having the HG done, you mind as well replace the water pump and timing belt as well. My mechanic didn't charge me any labor for this. Each time it cost ~$1000 with the WP and TB. Make sure you get several prices. Other than the HG, it's been a pretty good car but other than the limo ride, 11-23-63 was a pretty good day for Mrs Kennedy.
