Description:
After a four year hiatus, the Volkswagen Golf has returned to North America with a new look and a new name to replace the Rabbit.

The MkVI Golf is available in two-door and four-door bodystyles and can be powered by either a 170-hp 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder gas engine, or a new 140-hp 2.0-liter TDI clean-diesel engine. The gas powered models get either a 5-speed manual transmission or 6-speed DSG Tiptronic automatic. While the TDI models can be equipped with either the 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG auto with Tiptronic.

Standard safety features on all models include, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, tire pressure monitoring and six airbags. TDI models are extra equipped with features such as sport suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels/tires, leather steering wheel and shift knob, touch-screen 6-disc audio system with SIRIUS, fog lights and floor mats.

EPA estimates fuel economy to be 22 in the city and 30 on the highway for the veritable little hatchback.

Expert Reviews: 2010 VW Golf 2-Door | 2008 VW R32
Expert Rating:
4 stars

Strengths:
  • The base model is very satisfying
  • Exterior design is clean and attractive
  • Interior is excellent
  • Comes in 3-door and 5-door
  • Model selection is very broad with Diesel, GTI and high performance models coming
  • Fun to drive rating is off the charts for a base model aka practical car
  • Construction and feel is very solid
  • 5-cylinder engine is quite powerful with a very usable torque curve
  • Chassis handles nicely and feels like it can handle a lot more
Weaknesses:
  • Could use a center arm rest with storage
  • No interior options like leather are available
  • Radio has mediocre sound, poor FM reception and no steering wheel controls
  • Can’t get it as cheap as the competition
Ruling: This car is an evolution of a hatchback species from a company that understands hatchbacks. It is not merely the ‘5-door’ version of a sedan. Rather it is car and platform that delivers a lot and can handle so much more. The 2010 VW Golf is solid, fast, safe and FUN!

Review 4 of 4 , from Texas

Price Paid:  $23000.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
2010 Golf 2.0L 2 Door TDI

Strengths:
Great gas mileage. high quality of fit and finish inside & outside. This car has a lot of features. Great sounding radio. Feels solid on the road.

Weaknesses:
Since these cars are in demand and hard to get, people are paying at least sticker to buy this car. Little noticeable road noise. Getting used to driving a manual 6 speed diesel. Has a timing belt instead of a chain -- but I hear these belts today will last over 100k, so I guess its not a big deal these days.

Summary:
Great car overall. VW has really stepped up their quality in the past several years to better compete with Toyota. I know back in the early 2000's you can read in the forums all the horror stories of VW, but in these past several years quality has improved, you can see the improved ratings in quality on consumer reports web site and other sites too. Plus the Diesel TDI if properly taken care of will last a long time.
