Summary: Bought my 2005 S-60 2.4 Non Turbo in May of 07 with 27K on it. It was on a Chevy lot, and they were basically giving it away, so I decided to take a chance. 40,000 hard miles later- I'm thrilled I did. I used to drive trucks exclusively because I am so hard on cars. This car has been repeatedly put to the test. I have the front wheel drive version and had no problems in almost a foot of snow. It's not a rocket, but my other car is a Porsche, so that's OK. I've gotten 38 MPG on road trips going between 70-80 the whole way. Excellent value for the money. Brakes and tires are the only thing I have had to replace. Original tires lasted to 55k- I never rotated them and they never went out of balance. Just traded in my wife's 05 Acura for a fully loaded 09 S-60. I have had almost 2 dozen cars, and there is simply not a car out there as durable, overbuilt, safe, and high quality as the Volvo. It's not the ultimate driving machine, but it is comfortable and responsive- and peppy with the turbo. The back seat is small, but I never sit in the back of my own cars. I can't wait to be in the high mileage club. I don't know how anyone could have problems with this car- I have yet to see anyone who drives harder than I do on a regular basis.

Strengths: Comfortable, powerful, contemporary, stylish and fun to drive when not in the shop.
If you need new friends buy one and Volvo will provide you with plenty of mechanics to talk to. The service folks were professional, proactive, understanding, prompt, etc.
Weaknesses: Overall lack of Quality Control.
Blind spots.
Summary: They call this a Volvo??? My new fully loaded 2004 S60R bought overseas mid 2003 with point of acceptance delivery in the US was a stylish road rocket if it ever got out of the dealer’s service bay. It is not built for Boston or New England roads or weather. The 300hp 5 cylinder did exactly as promised and with little problems as long as it was drinking premium gas and going in a straight line but the mpg was always like a regularly aspirated V8. Too many intuitive programmed items installed with no manual over rides and this for a car that is billed as a sports car. The DVD navigation system worked like a charm BUT, being locked into AT&T for the integrated phone was such a bloody hassle that I terminated it after one half hour of service and trying to recode it proved maddening. Dead on arrival was the front right light that took over a month to get replaced. Both cute little light wipers that turned themselves on when they felt like it apparently were installed incorrectly which resulted in deep gouging of both light shrouds (another replaced part needing to be ordered) and subsequently having them disconnected permanently after they did it again. The alignment of the trunk lid was incredibly sloppy with excessive gaps and tolerance errors yup, it leaked when opened also. It is a crumble zone nightmare as a less than 1 mph nudge into a low parking stop caused numerous damages to internal plastic and metal. The 17in tire rims very problematic with potholes and quality of their laminate, enough said. Turning diameter is understated as being excessive with grinding of wheels inside well very annoying. Right side mirror could not maintain tension at speed and flubbed about or folded in. Poor quality metal-like interior trim dented easily. Fog lights continually flooded and misted (no dealer resolution). I ordered no daytime running lights so naturally it came with them and no way to disconnect without unknown damage to some other system. No nighttime privacy as lights always on. Volvo gave overseas mediator name, number, and e-mail POC info for me to deal with… this proved a no-go and futile gesture. Sold it, not stored it, at less than 15K miles and went gleefully back to Iraq safe in knowing that I never will buy another Volvo again.
Weaknesses: Elerctrical problems
Clutch
Tires not performance and neither all season
Summary: Nice Looking car with many problems right from the begining.
It's a beutiful car, inside and out, fast very fast athough clutch is not very good, wearing too fast. Gera box also not very smooth, sticks.
Amplifier problems. Fuel senser didn't work from the start. bad noise when turning not sure what it is, I will be taking the car for service soon, I think it's power steering or something with the suspension.
Strengths: Refined looks, comfortable ride, especially the driver's seat.
Weaknesses: Mechanical disasters aplenty, rides like my father's Oldsmobile, allergic to snow and ice.
Summary: Testimony for reasons not to buy a used car. This S60 had 39,000 miles on it when purchased in 07. I've come to the conclusion that it is a poorly built car that wasn't treated kindly by it's previous owner. Like a dog gotten from the pound after being liberated from an undeserving owner, the S60 seems to be out to assault me and my wallet. Here's how:
--I can't imagine how a car built in a northern European country can be so awful in snow or ice (or rain for that matter). This car is downright dangerous when the going gets slippery!
--Nice to look at, and comfortable to cruise on down the interstate, but a stodgy, ponderous, underpowered mess on the twisty, turny backroads I like to drive. I feel like I should drive slowly in the left lane, wearing a hat and leaving a turn signal blinking on, off, on, off.... Maybe I should move to Florida; gets me out of the snow, too...
--I don't know what happened to Volvo: their cars of old were legendary for lasting hundreds of thousands of miles while faithfully plodding forward without complaint. I've poured hundreds and hundreds of dollars into this one, now with 88K miles on the odometer. Burned up brakes twice (and I've never, ever had to replace brakes on a car before, so it's not me!), struts, tires, steering bushings, the list goes on and on. Broke the drive for the power window on the passenger side; don't know how, the stereo arbitrarily decides I'd rather listen to AM radio, or sometimes a cassette now and then, light bulbs blow faster than a $10 hooker....the whole car screams to me, "Yes, I may be Swedish but I work like I was built in some Eastern block country by drunks rushing to go on Holiday!"
