Description:
Pros:
  • 355 hp 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost engine
  • Roomy and functional cabin
  • Innovative list of standard and optional high-tech features
  • Third row seating with legroom that fit adults
  • Easily identified styling
Cons:
  • Less cargo space compared to others in same class
  • Standard second-row bench seat doesn't slide
  • Expensive EcoBoost and additional option packages
Ruling: The 2011 Ford Flex is a handsome, high-tech alternative for families who want minivan features without minivan style. Its unique exterior design, powerful engine options and spacious third-row seat make it a winner in its class.

New for 2011 is the addition of a new Titanium model. It slots in above the previous top-end Limited trim and starts at just over $40,000. An expensive proposition for a family SUV. However, for the money you get all the bells and whistles the Flex offers, including standard navigation and a power liftgate, plus a bunch of blacked-out exterior features that make the Flex look even more bad-ass than it already does.

The 2011 Flex comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all trims except the base model have available all-wheel drive. It comes in several trims -- the base SE, SEL, Limited and all-new Titanium.

CarReview's opinion of the 2009 Ford Flex

Blings:
  • Cavernous interior
  • Unique styling
  • Incredible fit and finish
Dings:
  • Lazy transmission
  • Polarizing brick look - aka - biggie-sized Scion xB
  • Some may think it's overpriced

Verdict: The highest quality, best built Ford we've driven in...dare we say...decades?

There's some dissent in the ranks of the automotive journalism world about the Flex. Some say it's yet another failed attempt by Ford at a new product, while others praise Ford up and down for finally doing something different and unique. We absolutely side with the latter. The Flex is a terrific machine. Yeah it has a weight problem, yeah, it is a little underpowered and yeah its fuel economy could be better, but you will be hard-pressed to find a better quality, stylish machine with so much room. It's really unfortunate that the Flex had to be introduced during such trying economic times, because if it was introduced five years ago, this machine would have been an overnight sensation for sure. In its first year Flex sales are lagging, but it surely isn't to the fault of the Flex. We love this machine, and for those who can justify the sticker price, it's a must drive.
