Price Paid:  $0.00 from Rosenthal Land Rover

Year / Model Reviewed:
2002 DISCO II

Summary:
I owned my DISCO for the past 3 years. The lease is up and I have decided to move on to the RR Sport. The dealer tried to talk me into the LR3 but after a test drive of the RR Sport I knew it was the one. I truly believe that it will be well worth the $62K. I had no major problems with my DISCO. I cracked a couple of headlights from rocks and the gas tank latch broke but other than that I LOVED they way it performed. I used it to tow a trailer with motorcycles on it and it even performed well in the mountains of West Virginia. I can't wait to get my new RR Sport out on the road. I have never done any off road riding so I don't have any complaints. If they were still making the DISCO I might but another. I enjoyed the dual sunroofs more than anything. I saw this truck over 11 years ago and decided then that I would buy one. At the time I purchased the DISCO the RR was out of my price range. Now that I can afford it I have made my mind up. There is no other truck out there that can compare. I have driven them all. The RR gives you a very classic look. Of course gas is high but if you are going to drive a SUV you are going to pay in GAS! I love my ROVER!

Strengths:
Style, Handle, Look,

Weaknesses:
Gas but that is with any SUV.

Price Paid:  $18000.00 from Independant one-man

Year / Model Reviewed:
1999 4.0 SE

Summary:
Wasn't looking for a Range Rover, but am happy so far. At this point I consider the Range Rover to be one of the best values when purchased 4-5 years used and with less than 50,000 miles. I've owned my Range Rover for about 6 weeks now. (Read below if you're interested in how I settled on the Range Rover) I feel I got a very good deal on my vehicle: $18K + tax, licence, etc. $20K out the door w/ only 44,600 miles on the odometer. It was a Flordia and California car and everthing, including milage, checked out on CARFAX and its in "Outstanding" condition. As somewhat of a gambler I chose not to take an extened warranty that would have covered me an additional 55K miles (3 years at my usually yearly mileage) because they are really tricky contracts with all kind of exceptions, high deductables, and cost between $4000 & $8000 dollars. (My advice is to take a potential vehicle purchase to a Land Rover specialist (Dealer or independant shop) and have a "pre-purchase" inspection done for between ($100-200). Be prepared to make an appointment several days out. In the six-weeks I've already put almost a grand$$ into the car. Most of which is non-essential stuff that I knew about before purchase. I spent $220 on an extra key (dealer only gave me one), $160 on front and back-seat carpet floor mats, $50 for two plastic "Land Rover" caps on wheel center, $200 to fix a gasket on the trottle body that blew in Vegas and was shooting out anti-freeze and $80 for a 6-CD Magazine changer. The brakes also needed a little work. Despite the initial $$ spent getting the truck perfected, I still really love this vehicle. It handles really well, has lots of creature comforts, looks great and feels even better to drive... it's like you're going to work in a leather couch on four wheels. As an outside sales guy, it has lots of advantages in that it breathes success, is great for taking clients out to lunch, makes you want to drive to that next sales call and when it's time to go home you just crank up the stereo and sink into the sweet smelling leather. A couple things I learned since owning: As the manual advises, unless your on an open highway, drive it in third (gears 1, 2 & 3) = Improved power and fuel economy. Also there is an incredible reference sight "rangerovers.net" that has tons of useful info. I am hoping to come back and post another review after I've had the truck for a year. As long as I spend less than the cheapest maintenance insurance over the next three years I'll be happy then I'll be ready to sell and get me another used low-milage RR for cheap.

Strengths:
Best 4-Wheel drive, loads of extras that come standard, sex-appeal, comfort, stereo, lots of Range Rover clubs for group outdoor adventures.

Weaknesses:
Power, low fuel economy: 14.5/12.5 mpg, high costs for parts and labor

I spent a month (cash in hand) looking for a vehicle. Originally had looked at the Toyota LandCruiser, because I wanted a true 4x4 with some luxury options. I used ebay and edmunds.com to determine the true value of the TLC and found that to stay under my goal of $20K I might be able to afford a '98 if I found a great deal. I eventally test-drove a '97 TLC and although it was in very good condition at 90K miles something about it didn't feel right. It just wasn't clicking. At a car wash a week later I saw a dark blue '97 Range Rover 4.0 SE with a "For Sale" sign in the window. I thought that I would never be able to afford one and was shocked to learn the owner was asking $13,000 (It did have 100K miles though). He let me drive it for the day and even took it to my general mechanic. Suprisingly it had everything I was looking for in a LandCruiser: 4x4, lots of room, leather, Cruise Control, power everything, automatic, A/C, power moonroof. My mechanic cautioned against it's high miles, engine leak and a few minor problems. I'm glad I passed because I found what I think was a great deal (time will tell). Despite the problems with that particular vehicle, something about the Range Rover felt very right. Eventually found and test drove the '99 4.0 SE which I ended up purchasing.

Price Paid:  $58000.00 from LR Dealer

Year / Model Reviewed:
1999 Range Rover HSE

Summary:
Step away from your checkbook, don't waste your money. I bought my RR new after owning a Disco for 3 years. My thought process was, okay the Disco gave me some problems, leaking oil, problematic sun roofs, window that liked to jump the tracks, to name a few. But if I upgrade to a new RR, just think how much better it will be for almost $30k more!! Nice theory, the RR is pure and simply put...junk. I don't think 3 months have gone by since I've owned it that it hasn't been in the shop, and out of 4 different RR dealers, besides having a nice eye appealing showroom, they are difficult to deal with and eventhough you spent $60k on a vehicle they still look down their noses at you. I never understood this since they get of work and jump in their Camry's to go home!? I digress, let me list just a few of the issues; air suspension has gone wrong 6 yes 6 different times. Of course it is the switch, air line, chip, etc, always an excuse with no fix in sight; more fluid leaks than a 80 year old roof; back end rattles; electrical problems; sqeeking doors and liftgate; power steering problems; and did I mention fluid leaks? All you RR owners know when I say I would drive staring at the digital display just waiting to hear that beeping sound that means, "thanks for spending all your money on our piece of junk that is about to breakdown again". My wife has a Aviator that puts the RR to shame, except when she hits the onboard computer button it beeps to go the the next menu and it sounds like the RR breakdown beep and I start sweating and twitching when I hear it. Then I realize I'm in a much nicer finished, reliable and better driving vehicle and can put my heart back in my chest. There is a reason for all the jokes about RR's, don't be fooled like I was and think it is just a few unlucky ones, I've talked to every RR owner I come across and the story is the same, STAY AWAY, AND SAVE YOUR SANITY! There is a reason there are all the jokes about the leaks, creaks, buy 2 so you always have one to drive while the other is in the shop, etc., and that is because it is true and us owners have to make jokes so we don't close our heads in the garage door out of frustration. Wow that was cathartic, thanks for reading. Good Luck.

Strengths:
Looks, stereo(when it works), off road capability(when it runs), looks good in driveway(as long as there is a oil pan under it to catch all the leaks). Dealerships very accomodating, since you will see them more than your family.

Weaknesses:
Reliability, Reliability and oh yeah reliability.

Similar Products Used:
Lincoln Aviator, LR Disco.

Review 4 of 48

Price Paid:  $5100.00 from Michigan private own

Year / Model Reviewed:
1995 Range Rover Classic County

Summary:
I was in need of a mid size SUV for several reasons, 4wd was not real important but desirable, limited funds so I knew it would be used, don't like getting loan for a vehicle. Since it was over 8 years old with 100k miles on it I didn't expect it to be trouble free but hoped I could handle any service it needed and do my own repairs. I read several reviews and comments about it, there were several complaints as well as good things but not really much different than any other vehicle of the same type and age. I have chronic back pain problem and it's difficult to find a vehicle I can ride in, with the air suspension I found this to have an excellent ride quality. It needed new air springs and the seller dropped the price to cover this cost, I was able to put the new springs on myself at a low cost and now it works just fine. The cost of parts can be quite high but with the Internet I'm able to locate aftermarket parts at reasonable prices. I really haven't found any problems with this Rangie, it's very solid, good handling and easy to work on. There are a few slight oil leaks but that's just part of the package, nothing serious but be careful where it's parked, they all leak a bit. The space round the engine is a welcome sight, most modern engine compartments are so crammed it's near impossible to do anything but with this I was able to do a complete tune up with no problem at all. You just can't beat a good ol' V8 for a smooth solid running engine and this is no exception, very smooth running and quiet engine with good low end torque, I'd never think it has over 100k miles on it but it is the original engine. There's a lot of gas pedal travel for off road low end control so it seems sluggish but this is only due to more than average pedal travel, hit it to the floor and she really jumps to life. This 3.9L fuel injected V8 has plenty of power for me. The power seats can be adjusted for the best comfort and there's plenty of room. Visibility out the big windows is very good as well. I have the short wheel base 100" so it's very maneuverable but no bouncing or bobbing down the road as with other short SUV's this suspension is nice and steady. This is a high maintenance vehicle, keeping the fluids and filters changed is very important for long life but I have heard of several owners who have 300k to 500k miles on them and still have the original engine and drive train. As four wheel drive goes this has some of the best designed wheel drive hubs I've ever seen, very strong hubs. Highway driving is smooth as silk, this thing feels like it could drive itself, no vibrations or darting from side to side, just a smooth solid ride that is very comfortable, this was not really designed as a highway vehicle but sure does well there. I'm not a rough off road "four wheeler" but as a landscape photographer the four wheel drive is nice to get to places I'd otherwise have to walk to or avoid completely, the off road performance of this Rangie is very impressive, plenty of ground clearance and with the auto traction control I don't spin the wheels, even with stock tires it does just fine and the air suspension allows good lift for off road while still being a great road vehicle with the lower suspension level. For an SUV of this age and mileage I have nothing to complain about, in fact it's in better condition than I expected. I don't mind buying used vehicles as long as they are in good shape, all the bugs have been worked out and there's really no depreciation to speak of. I say let the original owner get all the bugs taken care of if there are any, take the loss of depreciation and I'll take it from there! It's fun to drive and there's plenty of room for my large format photography gear or what ever else I need it for. Add a roof rack and there's even more space to haul stuff! There are quite a number of complex electronic components that could be a problem but that's just the way things are these days, so far I've not had any problems with it at all. The heat and A/C is plenty strong and it had a great sound system too. The alloy body panels look great and don't get rust spots or holes and the paint job is great, this really looks good and clean for being it's age. It's important to check the floors and make sure there aren't any leaks, water can get trapped under the rubber pad and rust the floor out, I found a few slight surface rust areas on the floor but caught it in time and treated them to prevent problems. The under side was well coated with undercoat so there is no rust under the body. All in all this is the best vehicle I've ever owned and it's held up well for it's age and mileage. This may not be for everyone but if you don't mind doing some maintenance work and really learning about your vehicle as I do it's as good as it gets that's why I give it a solid 5, it's not perfect but nothing is, I just don't see anything I'd want to improve on or change.

Strengths:
Fun and easy to drive, comfortable ride air suspension, Smooth quite running V8 engine and 4 speed auto trans with direct drive 1:1 coupling to engine at over 50 mph, full time Four wheel drive with auto traction control, ABS brakes that really work. Good climate control and sound system, comfortable 6 way power leather seats. Good visibility. Many aftermarket parts and componants are avalible.

Weaknesses:
Complex electronics may cause problems, mileage 12 to 15 mpg, requires high octain fuel, prone to oil leaks (It's a Land Rover!) OEM parts are expensive

Review 5 of 48

Price Paid:  $22900.00 from San Diego

Year / Model Reviewed:
1998 Range Rover

Summary:
I love my Rover. This is my second one. I had a '91 County for about 4 years before purchasing this one. I have had -0- problems with my '98, until now. For some reason something is draining the battery. So it will be going into the shop after the holidays. I am looking forward to buying another in 2004. So, I will be on to my 3rd Rover :-)

Strengths:
I'm not a car buff, I just get in and drive. So, I'll leave it up to the others here for the technical stuff. However, for me, I feel SAFE in this car. I like the way it handles, and I find it very comfortable. For purchase, buy a 3-4 year old Rover with low miles and save a BUNDLE of money!

Weaknesses:
As others said, it is a gas guzzler. However, I work out of my home so I only drive about 10K miles a year. So, I don't really mind that it's expensive on fuel.

Similar Products Used:
I have owned only Land Rover's as far as in the SUV divisions. However, I have owned, Mustang, Mercedes (2), Jaguar, Fiat, Lancia, BWM (2)Accura. My hubby asks if I want a different vehicle? I tell him, nope, I'm a true LandRover girl!
