Review 5 of 11 Year / Model Reviewed: 1999 Summary: I don't actually own this amp, but I did get the chance to repair/test it. It blew because the guy shorted a woofer...etc, etc. Easy fix, one transistor, unlike many that blow a lot of things before the fuse...(Rockford comes to mind). I was surprised by the build quality of the amp, especially the size and weight of the heatsinks and how they are formed to remove heat from the output and power devices rapidly. They are thicker at the circuit board side and get thinner towards the fan. The PCB is really well made, next to PG in terms of CAD design, layout and vias. Nice Job! The fan on this one runs at full speed all the time, which is fairly annoying. It seems to have been changed to thermal control in the newer ones. 12 TIP 35/36 outputs (six per channel) are the most I've seen in an amp in this power class except US AMPS. (Same part numbers too). The power supply utilizes 12 IRFz44 MosFets (whew!) and the supply operated unregulated, NOT regulated as Audiobahn claims..but that's not a real big issue with me or at all. It does, however, operate down to 7 volts!! Expect a lot less power there, but it doesn't just shut off. I found that interesting. Internal rail voltages are at +/- 42 volts (that's 84 volts, folks) @ 13.8V input, which is about right for a 200*2 4 ohm amp. From what I could tell, the audio outputs are a variation on the Triple Darlington design used by PG, which is a very good thing. Triple Darlington (when utilized correctly) allows the amplifier to do its job while being less affected by the speaker's changing impedance while playing. Overall, I give it a high rating because it does its job with no complaints, it's built right and it sounds GREAT! Strengths: Chrome look is different..cool/ugly? I don't know. Very quick protection circuit. Weaknesses: It's shiny...fan's loud (see review). Blue illumination should be LEDS, not sick blue/green lamps and voltage regulated so they don't "flash" to the beat. Crossover damping varies with frequency position. No bias adjustment in output section...(more labor/parts...never mind) Similar Products Used: Everything from Alphasonik to Zapco. It would be unfair to compare it to amps of other price points, but it does a very good job of amplifying an audio signal cleanly..provided that you use a quality crossover. A watt is a watt if the amp is designed properly, it will "hit hard"...there is no such thing as "hard-hitting" watts or the like. Bottom line...the power supply internal to the amp makes the number one biggest difference.
