Year / Model Reviewed:
1999 JBL BP300.1 Mono Amplifier

Summary:
It's an underrated 300W X 1 @ 2 ohms amplifier. I have one so far right now, till I have hooked up three JBL Mono amplifiers. I'm using only one 12" JBL subwoofer on a competition 3/4 ply wood port enclosure. I have no capacitors, no equalizers nor crossovers or any added power cables. I just have it connected with my stock power wiring from my car's amp. My cd player is an Alpine 2 Volt receiver with no over drive component to higher the sound level. This is a tricked out budget system that I really think I should tell you this stuff to you all, but I will anyway.

Strengths:
This thing is so brutal @ 40-50 hertz. It seems it clips when I over drive my cd player but that's because I need to higher the voltage of my cd player, other than that it bangs. It barely gets hot too. It has a very nice design. Also it's a cheap affordable amplifier with high performance/quality SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and SQ (Sound Quality).

Weaknesses:
Even the most expensive or best sounding amplifier has it's weeknesses, so I will honestly tell you about this amplifier's weekness. 1.) It's dynamic range seems to sound compressed at certain points. Specially at high volumes. I can also be mistaken though, because of my subwoofer's performance, that's also an important component that has to match with my amplifier's wants (not watts). 2.) It lacks Sound Quality about 25% less than my other amplifier that I use to have and hooked up also with the same sub. The name of my old amplifier was called Precision Power PCX250. I used to power my same sub and pushed underrated 200W and seemed to sound a litle louder and way more accurate sound than my JBL amplifier 300.1. 3.) It has an aweful input level. It seems like this thing needs more signal compared to my PCX250 amplifier. 4.) It has very little bass boost. It has up to 6 db +/-3. My old precision power had up to 12 db +/-3! And I had to lower it down alot. Also I had to lower my bass from the Alpine too.

Similar Products Used:
Precision Power PCX250 (Best sound quality ever heard). Planet Audio 300 (more expensive than JBL, but the embarracing thing is that JBL blows my Planet Audio 300 with the same output) I'm rating this amplifier 5 stars. The reason is because this thing can get serious depending on the wiring and depending on the right components I'm using. Besides, it's the best cheepest amplifier ever bought. If I had money Id'e go with JL Audio. But believe it or not, JBL's output seems to be loudER than any JL Audio amplifier WITH the same output @ 300W. Obviosly JL has a better SQ but then again look what we are comparing.......the best sounding amplifiers in the world v.s. the loudest Brand amplifier in the world!!!!!! That's interesting. And to finish this up.....I rate JBL "top 10" place as of right now in 2004. I can't say JL is number one or any other brand. "And never will". That's a fact. All I can say in my opinion's "best tastes"....is that between the top ten list just got to be included ... JL Audio, PPI, Rockford Fosgate & Zapco ALSO besides JBL! All this talking was by experience and by research. Thanks alot for your time.

Price Paid:  $125.00 from E-Bay

Year / Model Reviewed:
2003 BP 300.1

Summary:
If you are looking for a hard working amp to drive subs and one that will not break the bank, I highly suggest checking into this work horse. The amp is driving two Rockford Fosgate 12" subs in 1.25" enclosures. We have been very impressed with the its performance. The system is in a Nissan X-Terra, and it will simply blow you away! I paid to have the amp wired simply because I could not figure out how to get through the firewall. Some say it is hard to set up, but the gain is very easy to adjust. I did so because the audio shop had it turned up too high so the amp slope was steeper than the volume. After lowering the gain slightly, the two match and sounds great!

Strengths:
Powers my two 12" subs without any problems. Crystal clear.

Weaknesses:
none so far

Price Paid:  $99.00 from AAFES Ft. Bragg, NC

Year / Model Reviewed:
 JBL BP300.1

Summary:
I have used this product through 3 sets of subs as i gradually upgrade my car. I originally bought this for the pure fact that it was marked so low when I saw it I immediately purschased it and the Kenwood that I intended to buy. Took them both home and gave each one a week to tune and tweak until I settled on the JBL, had to it blew out my subs, took the kenwood back and bought some new subs with the money. Currently I am pushing 2 12" Infinity Kappas with the plan to go up to 3 when I finish the designs for the box, as of right now the only amps I will let in my car are JBL or RF.

Strengths:
I have nicknamed my amp wolverine for the power it puts out for it's size.

Weaknesses:
None.

Similar Products Used:
Kenwood, Rockford-Fosgate, Sony
