Review 1 of 17

Price Paid:  $400.00 from best buy (new)

Year / Model Reviewed:
1999 rockford punch 400a

Strengths:
under rated, price, better than the punch amps of today last year rf made a good punch amps.

Weaknesses:
none

Summary:
This is a great amp, I have had this amp for 6 years and it still works great! Very claer and powerful. For those reviewers who said it was getting hot and did,t sound clear little tip try getting it installed by a professional installer at a good shop. The sound of your set up is only as good as your installation and install materials. The only time my amp cut of was on a 6 hour trip and I had it kicking most of the way.

Review 2 of 17

Price Paid:  $269.00 from Crutchfield

Year / Model Reviewed:
2001 RF Punch 400a4

Strengths:
enough power

Weaknesses:
unnatural sound quality

Summary:
Bought mine "reconditioned" from C'field. (wondering if I received amp returned by one of the other reviewers here) Agree with others about lack of clarity/harshness in midrange and upper frequencies. Plenty of power, but its just not a pretty, natural sound. Very dissappointed.

Review 3 of 17

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Quality Car Stereo

Year / Model Reviewed:
 2000

Strengths:
very clean sound, more power than rated.

Weaknesses:
does get really hot, though most amps do.

Summary:
I heard lots of good things about RF amps so I got one installed and was very impressed. Running 4 Infinity 5x7s off the two front channels and 2 Kenwood 10''s off the two back channels, Alpine head unit. Plenty of power, nice and crystal clear sound. Dont know why so many people here dislike them, most people I know are crazy for them. At first I thought I was paying too much, but after you listen to it for a few days it really impresses you. Most of my friends are jealous because they spent twice as much $$ for 2 amps when I got 1 pushing everything.

Review 4 of 17

Price Paid:  $189.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
 2000

Strengths:
The amplifier's heatsink gets super hot, which means that it is dissipating heat very well. Keep in mind that the job of a well-designed "HEAT"sink is to dissipate or draw heat away from the sensitive electronic parts. I have pushed it hard in the 95 degree florida heat for hours and hours and it never shut down. This amp is able to produce large of amounts of power for extended periods of time. I just love it.

Weaknesses:
The built in crossover wasn't very flexible. I think it's 80 Hz low pass. But I prefer to use 120 Hz low pass.

Summary:
Much more efficient than other amps I have used before. I have it bridged to two channel mono pushing two JL Audio 10w1-4's. I can get some serious SPL out of them, but what impresses me the most was the amp's sound quality. The bass is very tight and impressive. I'm looking for another 400a4 for my mids and highs. Maybe one of the folks who posted a bad review here can sell me theirs. These amps are getting hard to find and more and more expensive as they become scarce, but I highly recommend it for anyone who can find it for around $200.

Much more efficient(louder) and much tighter bass than other amps I have used with my subs. I have had both a Sherwood and Orion pushing the subs in the past.

Review 5 of 17

Price Paid:  $200.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
 2001/400.4

Strengths:
Looks good, caps hide the wiring well, allen wrench hook ups, comes with a fuse.

Weaknesses:
It sucks, it gets hot enough to boil water, distorts easily, doesn't get that loud, and starts to smell like it really is burning up.

Summary:
I'm revising my old review from before. This amp is really mediocre. It gets hot enough to burn your hand, even at low volumes and it distorts very easily when you turn it up a little.
