This is one of the best units on the market. The audio output control exceeds any other head unit and the functionality is easy to navigate on the head unit. Sound quality is amazing on this unit, definetely for the serious audio enthusiast

Strengths:
Rodbust phantom face mechanism. Excellent audio output.

Weaknesses:
i personalize doesnt work, takes some getting use to the controls

Similar Products Used:

Review 2 of 5

Price Paid:  $1250.00 from Gary's car radio (au

Year / Model Reviewed:
2002 Alpine CDA 7998R

Summary:
(price in AUD) This is probably alpine's best CD tuner yet! detailed sound adjustments like multi crossover with variable slope, parametric eq, time correction etc are possible. The 4V preouts certainly help the amps. i'm using JLaudio amps/subs, and focal components. the sound is clear and detailed. the unit has no internal amp, but anyone willing to spend this kinda money on CD tuners would'nt want one. The menu system is less than intuitive. The remote is pretty basic. MP3 feature is good but CDs obviously sound a lot better. And the media expander function doesnt make sense.

Strengths:
sound quality, parametric eq, crossover, nice display and 4v preouts

Weaknesses:
menu sytem is a touch fiddly, phone function works only with nokia handsets (and needs an expensive add on!)

Similar Products Used:
Pioneer, blaupunkt

Review 3 of 5

Price Paid:  $799.00 from Sound Advice

Year / Model Reviewed:
2002 Alpine CDA-7998

Summary:
Overall a great deck. Love the over sized face. Great display/matches perfectly to the colors in my Firebird. Awesome sound quality.

Strengths:
Great sound/display. Phantom face. Lots of options.

Weaknesses:
Tough to cycle through all the options and features.(Don't recommend playing with it while driving) Phone features only work with Nokia phones and the adapter costs $300. Basically a useless feature unless you will spend the money or switch your phone plan to have a Nokia phone.

Review 4 of 5

Price Paid:  $475.00 from ebay

Year / Model Reviewed:
2003 Alpine CDA-7998

Summary:
Great unit...I've have many different receiversm the last 2 of which were stolen. This was one of my main reasons for getting this Alpine, the phantom face that retracts into the dash. Overall the sound is excellent, I would say just a notch below the Clarion 9675z. However, this has more features...most impressively excellent MP3 processing. Many features, options, things to toy around with. The remote is very functional, more so than the clarion's, it also controls the angle of the face (useless, but cool). The is an expensive, high performance unit for serious car audio enthusiasts. Hasn't been stolen (yet).

Strengths:
sound, looks, features

Weaknesses:
no color screen savers, but hey, if you're into that get yourself a pioneer or something (you'll miss out of the sound quality)

Similar Products Used:
clarion 9675, 8675

Review 5 of 5

Price Paid:  $550.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
2003 Alpine CDA 7998R

Summary:
Awesome sound! If you want (but can't afford) the F#1, this is the next best thing. I'm using this with my Alpine F450 bi-amp and Alpine F177A speakers. Using the DTC is an incredible experience as it lets me tweak the sound coming to the driver's position- just listening to CDs like Cafe Del Mar makes the instruments really sound crisp. Also, as I am using a BMW 323 e46, the amber glow on this unit matches my dashboard.

Strengths:
The S/N for the radio is outstanding and the MP3 player's not that bad either.

Weaknesses:
There's no internal amp, but hey you'd be better off getting an external amp anyway.
