Strength:

great sound, great FM sound, looks cool, 4v outs, BBE, works better than anything with my JL subs, comps, and amps.

Weakness:

Its really sad than my brothers $149 8 year old pioneer plays any CDR and my 4 year old alpine cant

It would be the best CD player I ever had if the eject would work all the time and not when it feels like not working once in a while, and if it would play all CDR''s.I cant understand how a CD player played every CDR I ever made, and then one day "blah" I would have a better chance of seeing GOD than to get a CDR to play now. go figure.other than that it has great sound, great FM, great looks, but the + and - buttons are to small.

Strength:

Sounds great! Cd player and changer controls are excellent.

Weakness:

Remote that comes with it has to be "adjusted" (read banged on the console) to work sometimes. The buttons are a bit to small and hard to find while driving.

Back in my high power days I wouldn't have bought a unit with a built in amp. This one is about 28RMS. It pushes the 4X6 polks in my truck corners just fine. I use the preouts to run an amplified Bazooka tube. My truck sounds awesome, but you won't hear me coming from a block away. The tuner is not as good as the Alpine that this unit replaced, but it is better than the panasonic that is in my civic. Now that I just want quality sound with good volume this is PERFECT! It does not skip. I love the volume control. It ejects kind of slow, but it has always been reliable. I wish I could still buy one for my civic. Bought mine online and saved $150 over what the local guys wanted for it.

Strength:

great sound

Weakness:

takes forever to load cdr's.

everything about this unit is good except that it has a hard time loading and playing cdr's. tried different cdr media (gold, silver, generic, brand name) none seem to fix the problem. since i listen to cd's quite often, what a waste of money.

Strength:

Great Sound Quality, clean display, nice knob, 4 v pre-outs, BBE is much better than LOUDNESS

Weakness:

only two preouts. does not like CD-R's at all. Takes about 20 seconds to find the beginning of each track on CD-R; won't read 80 min CD's at all. Probably gonna get a new head unit because of this.

If you do not own many CD-Rs, or if you plan on using one of the new changers which are CD-R compatible, then get this head unit. You will not be disappointed. If only the laser was a little more tolerable, this would be fantastic. Oh well.

Strength:

sounds great, best head unit ive ever heard. very clear, crisp, detailed sound. i like the way it looks, some cd players look like star trek machines, but not this one. doesnt fade away in sunlight either. its also very "tweakable" with many adjustments to fine tune everything to my likes.

Weakness:

hmmm....cant think of much. some of the buttons are a little small, thats about it. but you learn them quick.

its just plain out an awsome cd player. i have it hooked up to a Fosgate 400a4 amp pushing 4 infinity mids/highs and 2 kenwood subs. i didnt know it could sound this great. i love driving now, i just wanna drive around and listen to it. alpine has my business for life.

it replaced a sony cd player, jeez it was like night and day. i am not a fan of sony car audio products anymore. stuff kept breaking. buttons wouldnt work, it ate my cd's, and the pop off face rattled a lot. DO NOT BUY A SONY

dead unit
Model Reviewed: 1998

Strength:

this unit really sounded good when it worked. In shop for same problem that. other reviewer had. it would not take cd in or out.

Weakness:

after 1 1/2 years unit died suddenly. it worked fine then the next time i drove car it would not do a single thing except barely eject cd that was in it.

not very pleased with only 1 1/2 years of use and its D.O.A. not a good value for 450 plus head unit. i am very disgusted and probably won't ever buy another alpine especially since they obviously are now worried more about looks than the sound quality. has anybody else noticed this besides me? you now have to pay 550 to 600 to get 4volt preouts and they have done away with the mdac converter. they seem to have jumped on the pioneer and kenwood band wagon!

Strength:

Great CD sound

Weakness:

Disk in/out failed in 3 months; FM reception way to improve

I use for CDs 99%, so FM reception is not that important (3 out of 5 - the $120 '95 Blau beats Alpine in same car, same antenna). CD sound is detailed, convincing, energetic, some would say bright and aggressive. Nice soundstage with proper speaker placement. This - with bright speakers and a same sort of amplifier - can be too much for any pair of ears (something opposite to Nakamichi sound), so components need matching. Anyway, the CD part well deserves the price tag. 5 of 5.
Ergonomics: All buttoms in right places, but too small, the rotary encoder is convenient, but flimsy. Works fine, but needs a beefier shaft to be foolproof. Faceplate eject button and faceplate loading might be smooother. 3 out of 5.
Reliability: At least in my case - bad, disk eject needed service after 3 months.
Shock protection: Excellent, and CHA614 changer - great too.

an Audio Enthusiast

Excellent Cd player, Has never skipped on m. I have friends who had Head units from the previous year and the year after and their Cd players skip. This Cd player is easy to use and is good if you don't have any amplifiers. It is worth it to save $50 and buy the 7840 which has no power and an extra preout and a subwoofer level. The 7844 is also a great cd player it is the same as the 7840 but has power. All together the 7840, 7842, and 7844 are excellent.
