Model Reviewed: Alpine CDA-7863 Head Unit

Strength:

ALPINE Quality and Reliability! Complete control over Sub levels, High and Low frequencies, Bass Bandwith, Trebble center, BBE processor Cleans up the Sound by eliminating Phase distortions, you name it this deck has it!

Weakness:

Remote is wide and kind of ugly, but that is IT!

This Head unit never ceases to amaze me! I'm always able to tweak the settings to really bring the best out of my system. Among the most useful features are the High Pass and Low Pass crossovers and Subwoofer control, you can really keep all of your sound stages completely separate! I'm running my four stock interior speakers off the units built in amplifier on the High pass to filter out the bass and now they scream out mids and Highs with no distortion! I run the front pre-amps to a Kenwood 7251 amplifier powering 2 Pioneer 6x9's mounted on the rear deck and 2 Bose tweeters mounted up front to completely fill the interior with the most crisp, clear and screaming loud mids/highs. I have the Subwoofer Pre-amps running to a Concept CCD-1200 D-class Amp to 2 Audiobahn AW1000Q 10" Subs running at 1ohm for 623w RMS each (Tested @ 13.9v). This head unit keeps everything in check without needing a processor or passive EQ and the sound Quality is AMAZING even running through the Onboard Amplifier! This Unit is an awesome addition to any car audio system and can be had at reasonable prices.

Strength:

Strong, crisp, sound. Multiple frequency selections. Remote control.

Weakness:

Loose wire connection somewhere on the faceplate which causes the unit to shut down completely and makes different lights blink at any given time. Bottom of unit must be shimmed to keep this from happening but makes changing cd's difficult. I blame the poor unit construction and the installation from King's because the rear deck strap wasn't connected. Their reply was 99% of the vehicles don't get these installed even if the vehicle is a 3/4 ton, 4x4 suburban with 35" tires. Since then, no work has been made to the unit and King's won't accept responsibility. I own a P.O.S. Alpine indash.

This unit isn't a quality piece. After reading other summaries, I've come to the conclusion...I'm not alone. In the beginning, I felt my problem was a result of poor installation. Unit set-up could be difficult for some people--it does take a bit of time even when familiar with the product. I suggest buying a different unit with less moving parts.

good sound, alpine has awsome quality in its music. but i am wandering what volt the RCA-preouts are on it.if you know, mail me and let me know. the bbe and the sub level is great, the pass filters are good. it is a powerful unit, 60w x 4 is huge, bigger than anything else. around 35 RMS i do believe to the other gut who did not know

Weakness:

it skips a lil when i hit bumps and turn my system up. other than that its awsome, but it is almost 4 years old so what can u say.

Great cd play, it plays most all my cd's even if they are scratched, more than i can say than some of my friends cds, i am givin a lot of cds casue i can play them and they cannot. the bbe is good, and i like playing with teh high and low pass filters, sub-level control comes in very useful with my 4-MA 12's, it does skip and stuff when i het big bumps and i have to pop it out of teh dash at sound compititions cause my bass makes it skip. warillion@yahoo is my address if you have a system , mail me!

Sounds great

Weakness:

It's a P.O.S.

I bought an Alpine unit expecting quality. At first I was very impressed with this cd player. I was so impressed that I bought one for my brother. Then my cd player started having this issue where sometimes when I would try to skip a track or push any button on the bottom the whole unit would blink off. Extremely annoying. I eventually removed it and had it fixed by an authorized Alpine repair shop. That worked for awhile but now its still doing weird things. I am hugely dissapointed with Alpine. My brothers cd player does the same blinking on and off thing. I would think twice before buying this head unit.

BBE processing Easy to read display Great sound quality

Weakness:

Only 2 pre-out outputs No satellite radio interface

Excellent product. I have owned several CD head units during the last 12 years (Kenwood, Alpine, and Pioneer) and this is the best. The BBE feature is incredible. I leave it engaged ALL the time. In fact, I cannot imagine ever not having this feature in the future. I generally do not like weird ambience processing or "loudness" bass boosts, but BBE is completely different. It makes all of my music sound sharper and clearer. This is especially important as I use a lot of MP3 encoded discs. I have not had any skipping problems to speak of.

Strength:

60Wx4 peak power, dont know what the rms is but prob 22-27RMS. -9.3dBf fm reception -105dB CD signal to noise very clear sound -80dB radio signal to noise ,fm stations sound like a cd. -BBE, has 3 settings , improves sound quality -Rarely skips -2 sets preouts -built in processor for adjusting bass emphasis(60Hz-180Hz)treble frequency(10.0kHz-17.5kHz),bass q factor(wide1 to wide 4) high/low pass filter(80Hz-160Hz) and subwoofer Phase from normal to reverse. - remote control

Weakness:

-display somewhat hard to see in bright sun -overheated a few times -with BBE off, reciever becomes a 50 dollar reciever.solution keep BBE on. -dont get the memory lead that is supposed to be connected to the battery, does it matter. The fuse box that is connected to it makes installation a little difficult at least for my car.

This is a great head unit in my opinion.Powerful, colorful display and great sound quality with oem speakers, would sound amazing with set of kappas.Dont know about other posts here but my deck rarely ever skips even over the roughest roads.Somewhat expensive even at alittle discount when it first came out. Would recommend to most.

Strength:

Power and sound quality are excellent. Reads CDR discs fine, just get the greenish ones.

Weakness:

Scuffing on the faceplate is noticeable in sunlight. Dimming feature can't be turned off, so you can't have it daylight bright with the headlights on. It was expensive when I bought it, but I got it installed with the price...

I didn't want to install an amp in my Del Sol so I got the 7863 with the 60x4. I've been happy with the sound quality and the BBE makes a world of difference for sound quality. I've had better luck with light green CDRs than the blue ones, but it seems to like burned CDs. CD-Text is nice with Nero, but it only accepts 15 or so characters when it scrolls, so you can't always get the full track title in. Paired with (4) 6-inch Infinity Reference coaxial speakers, it's plenty loud and the sound is great. I haven't had any overheating problems or rattling from the faceplate. No real issues in over a year of using it.

good clear sound but i think its because of the BBE processing, nice unit when it worked.

Weakness:

face is easily scratched, buttons a little small, graphics are ok, CD SKIPS!!! its annoying as hell

a very nice unit for about 1 and a half years. But lately the cd player has been skipping like crazy whenever im driving. Very disappointing, i thought alpine was going to be quality product. I remember hearing warnings about alpine decks with cd skipping but i took a chance anyway. this is the last alpine i'll ever buy.
