Strength:

The subwoofer level control and this thing has played every cd I have thrown at it. ( so to speak)The sub-out is clean and the highs are crisp.

Weakness:

The display kinda sucks, no real graphics. I will take sound over graphics any day.

I love this Head unit. I have put several HU's and wound up putting this one back in. I have it hooked up to a Pyramid 1000 watt 2 channel amp and bridged with 2- JBL subwoofers. It sounds awsome and it really bangs. It's nice having the subwoofer level control.

Model Reviewed: CDE-7858 ALPINE

Strength:

Easy to use, never skipped, and loved it's sound.

Weakness:

Durability, the receiver did not last 2 years for me. Did not even give me a warning for it broke. Had it looked at, and was told it would be cheaper to get a new one.

This was a great receiver till one day i took a CD out, and it would not accept another one.

Looks like a weak cd player, but makes up for it with sound purity.

Model Reviewed: Alpine CDE-7858

Strength:

Easy of use, good quality, great sound, 45x4 power, good value for the money

Weakness:

Hard to see display during the day, small buttons, only one pre-out, stupid "source/on-off" button that you need to hold down for 3 seconds for the unit to shut off - minor complaint.

This unit replaced the factory cass deck in my wife''s ''94 Pontiac Grand Am GT 2-dr. I was looking for a mid-range, easy to use, good sounding, quality system. They guys at Cir. City gave me sound advice (no pun), and recommended the CDE-7858. So far, it sounds great, easy to use and seems to be quality built. I have running through new Infinity 6x9 2-ways (rear) and Infinity 4x6 2-ways (front). The highs are a bit over bearing at times, but I equate that to the speakers not the deck.

Model Reviewed: Alpine CDE 7858 CD Receiver

Strength:

Awesome sound quality, good am/fm reception, good power output. BBE Processor really works, and makes the sound even better.

Weakness:

Only minor weaknesses: some are the same as the reviews for the 7856 (the faceplate is a little difficult to pull out at first, mute button is hard to find while driving). The "Bass Engine" adjustment is worthless for me - I can not notice any difference when adjusting it (only good for pre-outs?). I wish it had a wire for dimming the display when the dashlights are dimmed (when the headlights turn on), but it''s not too distracting. Finally, I wish it had seperate buttons for am/fm/cd rather than one "Source" button. Again, these are all minor compared to how awesome the sound is.

This Alpine replaced a decent sounding head unit in my 96 Ford Probe (I think it was made by Clarion). All of the experts that I talked to said if you wanted the best sound combined with good tuner reception, combined with overall good quality, get Alpine... And they were right on. The sound quality is far superior to my stock unit - which is no easy feat since the car uses an amp that takes in high-level outputs from the deck, and was tuned for the stock stereo - but this one sounds noticably better - so far, I love it.

Similar Products Used:

Stock OEM (Ford Premium Sound) CD players and systems in 96 Ford Probe, and 97 Ford Explorer (I think Clarion makes both?).
