Strength:

awesome sound control, easily adjusted, not too fancy but still great apearance

Weakness:

"NO TEXT" message at front

my unit sounds excellent i hooked it up in my gmc 3500 to 2 jbl 120 watt 2-way speakers 2 8 inch subs, one under each seat, 2 sony Xplod 9 x 6 3-way speakers with an AVI 10" sub behind the center console, and a PPI 5 Chanel 1000 watt amplifier powering it all and and it sounds killer. all the bass you could want and still all the high frequency's and midrange to make it all crystal clear

Strength:

EXCELLENT CD PLAYER (THE BETTER IN MY OPINION), CRYSTAL CLEAR SOUND, SOUND BETTER THAN ANY ONE USING FACTORY SPEAKERS, GREAT LOOK (WHITE PLUS BLUE, GREEN ETC) IT MATCH PERFECTLY IN MY GTI, AND THE AI-NET SYSTEM WORKS GOOD.

Weakness:

DISCOUNTINUED, I TRY TO FIND ANOTHER ONE, FOR MY GIRLFRIEND'S CAR, WE DON´T LIKE THE ALPINE NEW MODELS SO WE GO FOR KENWOOD. I'M SORRY ALPINE.

EXCELLENT EQUIPMENT, I MATCH THIS ONE TO ERA-G320 (DSP FROM ALPINE) USING Ai-NET SYSTEM, EVEN WITH THE FACTORY SPEAKEARS SOUNDS GOOD, ANY WAY, I ATACH 2 AUTOTEK AMPLIFIERS FOR SUBS & MIDRANGE & TWEETER, PLUS A CD- CHANGER ALPINE, AND MBQUART MIDRANGE+TWEETER, AND THE SUBS ARE SAS, SOUNDS REAL GOOD, I GOT WHAT I WANT, POWERFUL AND CLEAR SOUND, DISTORTION FREE.

Strength:

Sounds excellent.

Weakness:

Too many to mention. Display should be dot-matrix not the awful 7-segment type display on alarm clocks etc, CD Text, cant store names for Radio stations (it picks them up from the station itself which only 1 of the stations in my area uses, and even then I never listen to that one)! Display head is erratic when moving to previous position, NO GOD DAMMED CLOCK!, toy design... slow response to pressing some buttons (SOURCE for example)

NO, the reason there is "NO TEXT" is because Alpine have designed a lemon that is the biggest piece of s-h-i-t ever. Trying to sell it now and get a 7878 which will probably be just as bad. Other problems like the head of the unit not remembering exactly which position it was last time the car was on also annoys me. Most people use Purchased CD''s which, where I come from, dont use CD Text. Even when I do create my own in ECD Creator it''s still difficult to know what track you are on beacuse of the stupid way the text scrolls (instead of filling up all the characters on the display initially, it starts at the rightmost character and moves slowly, about .5 sec across the display... by the time a word has appeared you already know what the song is.

Strength:

great sound quality, clean interface, bright display

Weakness:

annoying CD text message cannot be disabled. Because of this, I don''t think I''d buy this unit again.

I bought this unit to replace my stock cd unit from Acura (which is actually made by Alpine). The controls are easy to use and well laid out. The sound quality is great even with the stock speakers since I have more control over the effects --- preset equalizer. Besides the good performance, one of the reasons why I bought it was it was aestheticly pleasing. It looks very sleek without too many graphics, buttons, etc. The ONLY flaw I have with this unit is the CD-TEXT message as everyone else has complained of.

Model Reviewed: CDA-7852R

Strength:

Nice sound! Using external amps but quality is crystal clear. Nice colourful display, but HATE the seven-segment style characters... my old cd tuner had a dot-matrix which was A LOT better - guess thats cost cutting for ya.

Weakness:

NO CLOCK! AARGH! Sureley for this price they can't be serious?? I stopped buying Kenwood years ago for this reason. Dont they realise these replace standard tuners that usually have the car clock in them? hmmm! Also hate the character display, I have a MDA-5048 also which looks so much classier than the tacky display on the cd tuner. And need I say anything about that bloody annoying "NO TEXT"... hmmm "NO S_H_I_T"

Well this unit was described to me as "top of the line" by the installer who recommended it after my 7846 was nicked. Im happy with the sound, excellent. It looks like a cheap plastic toy sitting above my MD/DSP player. Oh well didnt cost me so I spose thats one positive. Havent the Alpines really dropped in appearance... if my MD was stolen too I would have probably gone to a JVC/Kenwood or something else.. some of these even play MP3's now. I wouldnt recommend one. (unless it's free of course.. oh and if anyone finds a free or 'cheap' CDA-7846E cd tuner - I want it back!)

Alpine CDA-7846E - love this! Wish they still made it... doesnt even come close. They took out the handy features and put in tossy crap like the ability to change colours and angle the front face.

Model Reviewed: 1992 Honda Accord

Strength:

Excellent Sound Quality, Great Display (Easily Readable w/ Adjustable Contrast), User Interface is Above Average, 1 Preout can be selected as non-fading

Weakness:

Only 2 Preouts, No Dedicated Sub Preout, Swing Face (Just an accident waiting to happen???), Radio Reception is "so-so", Display often provides information of no value (e.g. "NO TEXT" when changing tracks)

For $400, I think this deck is hard to beat. It offers good looks, excellent SQ, plenty of power and 2 Sets of Preouts along with Ai-net. However, if you intend to immediately hook up external amplifiers and a sub, a deck w/ 3 4v or 8v preouts may more more suited to your needs. Again, I feel that in this price range the quality of the sound is unmatched, most likely due to the use of higher quality D/A Converters used in the head unit, attributed to the original street price being approximately $600.

Similar Products Used:

Alpine CDA-7863, although this deck is newer and is rated at a higher output power, the 7850 clearly has the lead in sound quality. Kenwood Excelon KDC-X815, this deck, while offering 3 4.5v Preouts, and more features, pales in comparison when considering sound quality and construction quality.

Strength:

design, flip-down face, ajustable angle, spectrum analyser

Weakness:

only 2 sets of pre-amps output, and no subwoofer control, cd-text

Incredible sounds, even with factory speakers. I like the adjustable face, i own a mistubishi eclipse '90 and the radio housing is very low, so i can adjust the radio to match the perfect viewing angle. Definitly a good purchase, if you can find one! the only thing..that alpine could have done much much better..with a set of sub-woofer output, and 4v pre-out. it is not a very expensive radio, if you compare to other models..that don't have built-in amplifier.if you are searching for a really good radio, go for alpine, they manufacture really good radio, it's not my first alpine cd-receiver, and i do not regret my purchase
