Review 3 of 7

Price Paid:  $220.00

Summary:
The best head unit i ever had, it's simplicity and performance in every way. I have 4 JBL 3 way speakers attached to its power outputs, and a medium amp with a 12" sub driven by its internal crossover outs... the sound is so impressive and loud, everyone gets amazed at the fact that i have no crossover nor external EQ installed, only the DEH-P400.
It plays not only CD-R's, but also CD-RW's, and that's for sure truly awesome, given the fact that lots of other brands more expensive in dash cd receivers just can't. I'd only trade this unit for a newer or higher Pioneer model, rotary volume control in the more recent models is very nice, but the slim remote in this one is great compared to those awful VCR-size remotes the other brand's models come with :)

Strengths:
Great level of technology packed in a unit this price range.
Fixed curves EQ, yet manually adjustable, sub pre-outs, very high power amp, slim remote and much more. No need for a separate EQ or crossover with this one... sounds awesome by itself!

Weaknesses:
Hard to reach menu system, but no problem for tweakers.
Lacks CD text display from the disc in the slot, only works from the cd changer if there's one attached.

Similar Products Used:
Clarion ProAudio, Alpine CD receivers.

Review 4 of 7

Price Paid:  $300.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
 1999

Summary:
The deh-P4000 is a great product....when it come to car receivers, there's Pioneer, and then there's everything else. It took me a while to get used to it. There are many bells and whistles. It puts out some clean nice sound to my Bose speakers. I'd recommend it...or better yet...go with the 2000 model (P4100)

Strengths:
Beautiful Face (detachable), Pioneer Name, Plays CD-Rs, Nice Equalizer Functions, Plenty of Wattage, Titling, Quick Loading, Cool Remote, & Much More

Weaknesses:
It took four hours for Best Buy to hook it up and totaled about $650 ...but that's because I drive a nightmarishly wired Cadillac which needed a new CD player anyway.

Review 5 of 7

Year / Model Reviewed:
 1999

Summary:
I paid $220 for my premier, and I would highly recommend the DEH-P400, but especially if you are planning to eventually add an external amp. The receiver has lots of audio adjustment, so it's truly an audiophile's dream come true (especially for the price). I might also add that if you have component speakers, this receiver can power many of them, without a separate amp, as long as you use some kind of a treble reduction system (such as the ones built into many component speaker's crossovers) with at least 6dB of treble reduction. I have had the receiver almost a year and a half, and I have never had a skipping problem, and have been happy with the receiver.

Strengths:
Easy Eq is awesome, it makes equalization easy for people who don't even
know anything about frequencies: bass, midrange, and treble controls are unusual for a receiver in this price range. Built in crossover allows some additional adjustment for bass, mid, and treble, including the Q factor.
It also has fairly powerful output from the built in amplifier for a head unit.

Weaknesses:
The Pioneer Premier DEH-P400 uses the new Mosfet 45 chip, which can cause the treble to become unbearably harsh, especially at high volume, although adding an external amplfier will eliminate this problem.

Alpine, Clarion Proaudio
