from ebay Year / Model Reviewed: 2002 Strengths: Great flexibility; great sound; well thought out. Can actually position a center stage and adjust delay from each speaker. Weaknesses: EEQ is bogus for most settings (Lord please save me from "club" and "hall" and "dome" settings). Wish I could just shut off the annoying, juvenile "movies" and operate the unit without the glitz. Doesn't anyone over 30 ever buy these things? Summary: I came to car audio recently (at 52!) from a 25K home audio 2 channel system (which I had enlessly tweaked for 6 years). I bought decent gear, but erred in the purchase of a Nakamichi head unit. My car stereo sounded like a $20 radio. So, knowing I had some decent (Focal polykevlar) speakers and a decent (JL Audio) amp, I tried a new head unit - the DEH- P930. I cannot tell you what a difference this made. I can actually hear someone singing as if they are sitting on the hood of my car, right in front of me. I can't get a good left channel separation ( the speakers are, after all, only inches from my ears), bu the over-all effect is stunning. I can control my sub output; I can set the high pass limit on my midrange speakers so I cross over correctly to the sub; I can invert phase to the sub ( which controls "boominess"); and I can use a legit 13 band equalizer within any of at least six preset equalization curves ( I chose "natural"). It automatically compensates for the speed at which you drive, so that noise cancellation is not a problem - and you can set at four different levels the amount of this compensation you desire. Of course, if it didn't sound great, none of this would matter, but it does, indeed, sound great! It is lush, full, with great extension at each end. The bass is fantastic. FM reception is much, much better than the Nak unit. It is well made, with a detailed, well explained manual. I have only tried the Nak unit and this one, so I cannot tell you if it is "the end" of all head units. However, I can say that I went from a $2500 system that sounded like $20 to a $2700 system that sounds like a million. I can't stop laughing at how good this sounds. It's just plain old fun, even for a geezer like me! My words of wisdom: You can get cheaper speakers, you can get cheaper cables; but if you scrimp on the head unit, you're dead. If you've never heard the thrill of a real front stereo center stage in a car, I cannot recommend this unit more highly. I would also note that it is much better looking than the pictures of it on the net, and would also note that its blue lighted dials match ( as in match, not sort-of-match) the blue dials in my Volkswagen Passat. I can't comment on the amp section, as I haven't used it (and I don't frankly understand why they bother including it, as almost everyone at this end of the game woud be using a separate amp) Similar Products Used: Nakamichi 40.
