from pawn shop Year / Model Reviewed: memphis 16-eqp4 Strengths: I love parametric eq's. I usually use only 3 or 4 bands of the nine on my pioneer EQ-6500 so a parametric eq would allow me to fine tune in the ranges I actually use. This eq has great control in the sub-bass, mid-high and high ranges that I tweek with the most. sounds clean. 3v in and 7v out further reduce systen noise. All controls except gain for the cd input are on the front. 1/2 din chassis. Front, rear and sub pre-outs Weaknesses: Now for the bad news, and to some this won't matter, but is does to me and no doubt will to others as well. The sub woofer pre-out is not controlled by the eq at all. The sub pre-out is only controlled by the sub crossover, master volume and sub volume.
What is the sence of having an eq band labled sub, that is adjustible from 20-60Hz that only works through the front and rear pre-outs but has no control over the sub pre-out?
Also, there appears to be no high pass crossover for the front and rear pre-outs. Memphis could have built a much better eq by adding high-pass crossovers to the front and rear pre-outs (would,nt added much to the price) and routing the signal so the eq (at least the lowest band labled sub) would work through the sub pre-outs. Aside from the eq vrs. sub channel issue and the lack of highpass filters for the front and rear pre-outs this is a good eq. Being a part time audio repair guy maybe I can cut a few traces and add some jumber wires to make it work like I want it to.
Of course if you have a seperate crossover with front and rear pre-ins and outs and it's own sub crossover you could just use it for the eq section and the sub channel would'nt be an issue. Summary: Very adjustible eq. sounds great, but has sub issues Similar Products Used: Kenwood KGC-6042 Great eq x-over but was'nt as clean as the pioneer eq-6500
Kenwood KGC-4042 great small eq/x-over
Alpine 3401 awsome eq/ no x-over
Pioneer EQ-6500 great eq/x-over It's what I'm useing now with no complants.
