Review 2 of 5

Price Paid:  $1230.00 from Bestbuy

Year / Model Reviewed:
2004 AVIC-N1

Summary:
This well rounded navigation system/car stereo/DVD player does it all in onle little package WITH great sound quality. The screen has very high contrast coupled with high brightness. The stereo boasts a decent 50 watts max to all channels but I preferred an external 4 channel amp. The built in subwoofer crossover with programmable crossover points does its intended job well. Being a gadget freak I was pleasantly suprised at the availability of extra inputs on the hideaway box. Sporting the ability to attach a videogame and a external camera for those who would like to view the world behind your car which by the way, is automatically triggered to display on the screen when the reverse sensing wire is properly attached, is rather ingenious. The voice prompts and data entry methods are a little awkward, but takes no time getting used to. This is an unbelieveable amount of electronics shoved into such a small package! This device in the hands of a pizza delivery person is a match made in heaven. I was recently looking for apartments in the Iowa City area. I entered all of the addresses one after the other and made a so-called shopping list of all of the apartments I wanted to look at as waypoints from one end of the town to the other. It was indespensible locating all of the locations flawlessly! The GPS receiver is very sensitive too. I have a stealth install in my car so the antenna is inside my dash and I still get all 8 satellites to lock on- inside of my garage!

Strengths:
Tons of room to add on to this system. A total all-in-one solution for navigation and entertainment. Awesome hardware specifications across the board.

Weaknesses:
Maps included with the unit are very far from being up to date. I find myself driving on the highway, but the map display shows a cornfield. A slot is opened right above the CD/DVD slot when the display is in the open and on position which when driving down the road, a individual may accidentlally insert a cd/dvd into, scratching the media to a useless condition. More than once I have found after driving the highway and turn on to a residential road, that "it" thinks I am much farther ahead on the road than I am. Performance gauges should have a timer option so users can check their quarter mile speeds and times. System totally lacks customizations. Pioneer should have given customers more control and options of software skins and maybe even a "owners" page to enter owner information with the ability to enter specifications on the car. Presently the user can only choose the navigation wallpaper and the stereo wallpaper. Pioneer: A word to the wise, fire all of the programmers that made those maps.

Price Paid:  $1469.00 from Ebay

Year / Model Reviewed:
2004 Pioneer Avic-N1

Summary:
After installing all of the necessary wiring for my Avic-N1, it was time for the big moment of truth. I turned my ignition switch to the "on" accessory position, and the unit's buttons glowed blue against the black face. But then it began to move, and I realized that there is something inherently cool about watching a full 6.5" color LCD screen slide out horizontally and raise into position from a dash. The system comes with a detailed user's guide for the many functions, but the operation is overall very straightforward. Touchscreen key operation definitely has its place with in car video navigation systems, as demonstrated by this unit. Yeah... we know it can play Burned CD's MP3, DVD's, has a built in radio, and can be used with optional satellite radio, TV tuner, and more. But more importantly, how good is the navigation system? For the wary consumers... I live on the far outskirts of Kansas City, in a neighborhood that is about 10 years old. But as I zoomed the map scale in to an appropriate level for displaying my hometown, I could see every street in my neighborhood, down to the cu-de-sac. But more importantly, what a new user of this product should understand is that this system has a learning phase which it will undergo immediately after installation which will optimize navigation performance. Internal sensors in the unit read vehicle speed generator pulses, it has an internal electronic compass, and gyros that detect every movement of the vehicle. Through a learning process, these sensors will become calibrated for the vehicle in which the system is installed. The best positioning accuracy will take place after this learning phase is complete, and its status is continually available. Beyond this, the system also offers audible route guidance. The Avic-N1 will speak to you in a soothing female voice through your car's front and rear speakers. What's also cool is that the volume level of the route guidance is set independently of the setting of say, the volume of the radio. This is only one of many small features, but things like this say a lot about the attention to detail that went into the engineering of this product. I could ramble on all day about all the cool features this system has to offer, but one thing I will say for all other gadget lovers out there like me... you're gonna love this product. It makes the most advanced in dash MP3 player look almost as mundane as the antiquated casette deck. The initial MSRP price tag for this item is high, but with a little patience a good deal will come your way.

Strengths:
1. Accurate navigation system complete with vehicle dynamics sensory apparatus. 2. Navigation, Video, Audio, and touchscreen operation all rolled into one convenient package. 3. Will fit in any standard 1 DIN slot (Hideaway unit makes this possible)

Weaknesses:
Well there are always ways to keep adding and adding to the improvement of a product, but where should one stop? For now, this is as good as it gets. Maybe the only inconvenient aspect of this product is that one of the two supplied DVD ROM map disks must be in its drive for unrestricted use of the navigation system. The "Memory Mode" map is very selective about which scale can be stored into memory.

Review 4 of 5

Price Paid:  $2900.00 from ABC Warehouse

Year / Model Reviewed:
2004 AVIC=N!

Summary:
I have recently purchased a 2004 AVIC-N1 navigation, xm satellite receiver with back up camera and voice activation from Pioneer. This product was purchased for nearly 3 Thousand dollars installed including the several options. The options and audio receiver is up to Pioneer's standards but the navigation from the GPS is poor. The maps are no where up to date. If you are purchasing this product to find addresses while driving, purchase another navigation product from a different source.

Strengths:
The optional XM receiver is great as is also the back-up camera. The camera is great for backing up to conect a trailer, you can back the trailer ball on your vehicle to right under the trailer hitch. The voice activation is quite accurate once you get used to using the product. This option helps you use the product without having to take your eyes off the road to jump from audio and navigation modes. You can also do address searches with the voice commands.

Weaknesses:
The updateness (is that a real word?) is very poor. In the first month of use I have not been able to find streets in my area of Southwest Michigan that have been built over 14 years ago. I travel to the Phoenix, AZ area on occassion and streets that were built 5 years ago are missing. I have the most current update for the AVIC-N1 and it is terrible. Also the navigation maps show streets that had been removed over 25 years ago. Tried to find the street Hidden Lake and upon a search only one street came up and that was Hidden Cove. Doing the same search with the Garmin GPS V over 12 streets came up that began with Hidden including the one I was looking for. Another big feature that is missing with this product is that you do not have the option of finding an intersection in any given town. You can only search for addresses or one of their 12 million Points of Interest. Many times one will receive direction of so far from such and such intersection but you are not able to find any particular intersection. AVIC-N1 will allow you to find the closest intersection once an address has been found though.

Similar Products Used:
I also own a 4 Hundred dollar Garmein GPS V that surpasses the AVIC-N1 in current streets by an very wide margin. This particular Garmin unit also has a 2004 update. The screen to the Garmin is small compared to the AVIC-N1.

Price Paid:  $1450.00 from Ebay

Year / Model Reviewed:
2004 AVIC-N1

Summary:
I LOVE IT!!! It has everything in one sole component except tv. I don't watch tv except for sports. I can load my navi to mem and then pop in a cd to listen my music while direction are steadily directing. It controls everything from the screen with touch screen controls. It even cooler when the screen is closed with ambient glow from the buttons. It has enough power to give very spacious sound from my components all around the cabin. I am adding the dvd/cd changer and sat radio and its complete. It came with the voice recog hands free mic w/ remote so i rarely touch the screen except to control the tone settings.

Strengths:
Everything...

Weaknesses:
None...
