Price Paid:  $170.00 from Best Buy

Year / Model Reviewed:
2005 JBL GTO 8626

Strengths:
Good power handling Wonderful range Good bass reponse

Weaknesses:
They "pop" at high volumes when exposed to heavy bass.

Summary:
I purchased these GTO's because they were the best speakers Best Buy sells in a 5x7 size. Moreover, I wanted to get JBL's because my friends kept telling me how good they are. Better still, they are an American company. After having these installed I was very impressed! My factory Mach 460 speakers in my 2004 Cobra are garbage! These JBL's are very good speakers indeed. Now I understand what my friends were talking about. Now that I have had enough time to evaluate them, I would say that they have certain characteristics that anyone would find appealing. The GTO's are a good "all around" speaker with good base response. It's funny, before I purchased them I compared them to everything else in the store and they easily came out on top. The midrange sounds are nice and the highs are also good. Bottom line: It kicks out a lot for its size! The beautiful thing is that when I had these hooked up with my Fosgate amp + my Clarion deck they produced EXCELLENT sound reproduction! I listen to mainly Rock music. Having said that, the only negative was that certain songs with deep bass drums kicking in brought out the limitations of these speakers. When you are dealing with music that has "hard hitting" clear bass they can handle enough power to blow your ears off! However, when I cranked up the music with the deeper sounding bass songs the speakers begin to "pop". Translation: They can't handle heavy bass at high volumes. Then again, how many 5x7's can? We all know that every system (or component) has its limits. However, I was hoping for a little more than what these showed me (in that department). It's frustrating when my subwoofer can eat up all the deep bass you can throw at it yet these 5x7's can't keep up. There's always a balance that has to be struck I suppose. Nonetheless, I have already purchased the "JBL Power Series" speaker equivalents. They are the top of the line 5x7's out there. I will have them installed next spring. In the meantime, I am still very happy with this purchase. I would definitely recommend these speakers to those who want excellent quality at a resonable price. If hooked up to a good system, their true potential can be reached (which is high). Thumbs UP!
