$160.00
from a Strengths: value for money [i paid 160 australian dollars], look pretty cool, a good first sub considering the price, but if u get a sub, ur serious about sound, so fork out a bit extra and get something decent [focal, mb quart, boston acoustics]. Weaknesses: sound crap and distort at what i would call short of loud. Summary: if ur serious about ur car system forget i have a general rule that u should forget about japanese speakers and this is definitlely the case with the alpine s12. i ran two of them off a soundstream reference class 5 amp [which is a seriously mad amp] and the subs sucked serious arse. the bass is hollow and muddy [rather than sounding 'bup bup' it sounds 'booowwww ooowwww']and hence sounds terrible on any sort of music that has fairly active base lines - ie r n b, soul, whatever. furthermore, u cant really crank these too loud either cos they distort terribly. i replaced these pieces of junk with a couple of orion amps which are run at 2 ohm rather than 4 ohm like the s12 and the improvement is incredible.
just a quick note, im still of the opinion that alpine make some of the best head units going round. im currently using the CDM 7861R and im very satisfied Similar Products Used: orion, focal utopia [the best sub i have ever heard], mtx, pioneer, sony [these last two subs are an insult to the industry]
