Description:
High performance meets heavy-duty sound in MTX's top-of-the-line Thunder8000 series T8104A 10" subwoofer. And we mean heavy — the strontium ferrite magnet alone tips the scales at a beefy 102 ounces! With that kind of power at hand, you know this sub will deliver the fullest bone-shaking bass MTX has to offer.

The T8104A is the picture of strength — the injection-molded, spun-aluminum cone has 12 polished ribs to increase stiffness and manage incredible sound pressure levels. A sturdy 12-leg, die-cast aluminum basket anchors the extra-stable structure. A durable black NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) surround fends off moisture and temperature extremes for long-term speaker accuracy.

Even when the music is hot, this sub stays nice and cool with a four-layer, 2-1/2" voice coil. You'll also find small vents around the frames — spider plateau venting — to help dissipate hot air under the spider and curb distortion.

  • asymmetrical linear drive system (ALDS) — spreads stress evenly across the suspension for high output with low distortion
  • spun aluminum cone has 12 stiffening ribs for extended power handling
  • one-piece gasket/surround made of thermal-pressure-formed Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) for superior sonic accuracy and greater overall durability
  • extended pole piece for a more symmetrical magnetic field and smoother sound
  • computer-optimized five-roll spider design combines extreme excursion with exceptional linearity, for maximum output and minimum distortion
  • die-cast aluminum basket resists sound-altering resonance without pulling electromagnetic energy from the magnet as a steel basket can
  • heavy-duty, gold-plated push-type speaker terminals provide extra-secure connections, ensure maximum signal integrity, and resist corrosion
  • frequency response 24-150 Hz
  • power range 75-400 watts RMS
  • peak power handling 800 watts
  • sensitivity 84.2 dB
  • top-mount depth 5"
  • sealed box volume 0.5 - 1.0 cubic feet
  • ported box volume 1.0 - 2.0 cubic feet

Review 2 of 2 , from Boston, MA

Price Paid:  $150.00 from Crutchfield

Year / Model Reviewed:
 2000 Thunder 8000 10inch

Strengths:
Ultra-low frequency response, power handling, overall quality.

Weaknesses:
Slow reaction. High impedance. Weight (but what do you expect w/a sub designed for competiton?)

Summary:
Great Sub. I only got one of them, and i use it as a substitute for my larger setup (when i need the cargo room). Bass is punchy but round and deep. Slow reaction time (due to in large part the design of the magnet, suspension and surround), but depending on how you box it this can be minimized. Good all around audio quality sub if you give it tons of power. Pushes out sound of a 12inch sub at times. Rocks hard if you set it up in a tri-box.
