from Circuit City Year / Model Reviewed: 2004 Xtant X1044 Summary: First of all, you won't find this sub for $100, I got it on clearance, perhaps the store decided not to carry the model anymore. I didn't know much about the brand but I felt the weight of the speaker and figured it was worth a bet. Now that I have played this sub for three years, I can say it is worth two or three times what I payed! I still get goosebumps and chills in my spine when I hear my favorite songs with this sub. I have never regretted my purchase.
Noting the comments above about two broken windshields, I can honestly believe it, though I've never broken mine. Maybe that's because I leave the windows partway rolled down when I drive, or because I only have a 700 watt amp. I'm not familiar with the X3001a amp, but the X1001e is a 1000 W, so it sounds like those other guys may have been playing their sub at 3000 watts! Not withing specs, but maybe reasonable with the level turned down. I am currently planning to buy a 2000 watt amp so I can feel the full potential of this speaker, I don't think I've truly experienced it yet. Even at 700 watts I can still set of car alarms if I try!
So you know I'm happy with this sub, my recommendation is to read the technical specs at Xtant.com to see if this sub fits your style. It is very versatile. I suggest deciding on an amp, then see if you'll run it at 2 ohms or 4 ohms. If your amp is not 2 ohm stable, go with the X104 which also will handle 500 RMS, 2000 peak. If none of that made sense, buy the sub anyway and have it installed by a pro. IMO, you get the best sound on this baby from a 1.5 CF slot ported box, but the spec sheet give several options and detail specs on each.
Disclaimer: Do not buy this sub if you are prone to heart disease, premature hearing loss, or vibration induced Parkinson's Disease. Be very careful around this sub if you are pregnant or nursing, or may become pregnant, as this sub produces a significant risk for exposed human tissue. Do not buy this sub if you just want a loud system: you will be highly satisfied but only a true audiophile can appreciate this sub.
Enjoy the sub, I hope my review is helpful, and go crack your own windshield! Strengths: Durability, power handling, aesthetics, sound clarity, volume. Weaknesses: If you have a 4 ohm amp you'll have to run this at 8 ohms, which will cut your power in half and the sub won't be that loud. Similar Products Used: 2x12" 4 ohm Crunch subs, 3x12" 4 ohm DVC subs of some cheap-o brand, 2x8" Rockford 4 ohm subs. This is my favorite setup so far and I'm only running a single sub!
