from Allstate.com Year / Model Reviewed: 1997 Honda Civic Weaknesses: Allstate Auto insurance - $420 for 6 months Summary: You win, Allstate.
You are big, strong, and powerful, Allstate. You can send vicious, tenacious collection agencies after me at your whim. You know I hold my coveted 760 credit score dear, it is my Achilles heel – and you can destroy it with hardly lifting a finger.
Your power move?
Sending me a bill for $49.18.
For what?
I have no earthly idea, and none of your employees are giving it up either.
I spent five months calling 1-800-ALLSTATE – “…where I know I’m in good hands”. Right. I’ve talked to about 45 of your employees in the last five months. If they were allowed to deviate from the script you provide them with, I’d probably know all about their families, hobbies, Middle Eastern life, etc. But they just repeat the same tired phrases again and again – until I say the magic words, “Could I please speak to your supervisor?”
I would think that these customer representatives don’t have such a great gig – but there are NEVER any supervisors around. And I mean NEVER. This seems to be their MO:
Can’t figure out why Allstate sent a bill for $49.18?
Just hang up, there’s no one watching.
The script won’t let you answer the question?
Just say the last phrase 3 times, then start at the beginning of the script again until you wear the customer down and they give up. Who cares if you resolve any issues?
Already been through the script 3 times?
Put the customer on hold, explaining that you need to review the case history and go out to dinner with the family. You deserve a break, and no one is there to say you can’t.
After 45 minutes of scratchy hold “music” and half a bottle of wine (yes, I know I’m not supposed to fill those gigantic wine glasses to the rim –but I’m on the phone with ALLSTATE), I might get a supervisor if the line to India hasn’t been dropped. Supervisors don’t have to follow a script, but they are required to read the case history and after five months of calls, this part takes a really long time. Yay for the second half of the bottle of wine!
After 30 minutes or so, the supervisor will admit that they can’t figure out why Allstate sent me a bill. So… correct the error. Remove the balance from my account and we’re all good, right?
Not quite.
Let’s open an investigation, this will take 7-10 business days. Wait… what? I thought you already were investigating where this bill came from and what it’s for, right? What have I been doing on the phone for the last hour and a half? My liver is already in pain and no one has even started investigating this yet?
Two weeks later, I get a voicemail from Allstate – they have some information for me, just call 1-800-ALLSTATE and talk to one of the representatives. Hmmm… okay. Only one problem – the foreign national at 1-800-ALLSATE can’t find any record of an investigation. So… Let’s go ahead and start with the script!
It’s a beautiful strategy, Allstate – you buy rock-bottom basement priced labor and spend it freely to ensure that you can send bills to me without justification, and you know my liver can’t handle any more phone calls with your script-reading representatives. You have all the power of a big corporation, the credit agencies got your back, and you’ve got my nuts in a vice. So, you win. You can have my $49.18 that clearly means so much to you. You’re an abusive, bullying boyfriend and I’m giving you up for good.
