These carbs don't seem to last 2 years without a big headache.

Hello, Does anyone have a good remedy to stop carburetor from wanting to cut off going around turns? This is my second Edelbrock in 3 years, both having the same problems. I tried cleaning it good while running and had no luck. Eveything was fine until I added Marvels to the gas tank as a preventative. Live and learn! I replaced the inline fuel filter prior to cleaning, still had no luck. Any help or good advice would be appreciated.

I have had nothing but problems with my Edelbrock 600. I sent a 500 back because i got the wrong one nevertheless it had metal shavings everywhere inside it. I should have known then. They sent me a 600 it had metal shavings and the air screw would not seat. Sent it back got another one, not as many metal shavings but after 1 1/2 yrs and who knows how many rebuilds and gas in my oil pan, "to hell with edelbrock"

Model Reviewed: Edelbrock #1400 - 600 CFM electric choke Performance series carburetor

Strength:

Really easy to install, runs great right out of the box. Looks great. The car idles much better than with either of the two Holleys I had. I'm now getting a substantial chirp out of 2nd gear with an automatic tranny and NO shift kit. Tech support line has minimal telephone-menu-hell and I spoke with a knowlegeable human on my first attempt. (I called after-the-fact to double-check compatibility, since the sticker on the box said appropriate for pre-1980s Chevys.)

Weakness:

No user manual! No installation instructions or even a picture of the carb with explanations of vacuum ports. Luckily I'm familiar with carburetor details after having tried to get the previous two to work for the past two years. 4 stars overall rating because now I wish I'd bought the one with the Enduroshine finish!

I know carburetor brands are similar to a religion to most car guys, but
I switched from a Holley to an Edelbrock carburetor this past month and it was the single best thing I've done for my 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I since I bought it 12 years ago. Ongoing problems with leaking Holley carbs - twice! right out the box new!! - caused me to abandon my attempts to use their products.

I drive the car in the summer and want it to perform well, but I don't race it except at the occasional "flashlight drags" that are held at a nearby airport. I'd more concerned about reliability on long trips and not having to carry tools everywhere I go than cutting an extra second or two off a quarter mile time. The Edelbrock 600 CFM (Part #1400) installs easily, but be prepared to spend an extra $25 or so for the linkage adaptor to connect the tranny kickdown rod if you have one. You'll also need the throttle cable plate kit, because the kickdown adaptor interferes with the stock location of the plate that holds the throttle cable end. I didn't realize that until the parts store was closed, so I made a throttle cable plate from some thin steel bar stock in about 10 minutes. I installed the whole thing in about an hour onto a stock 351W. The engine fired up immediately and I haven't had make any adjustments except to turn the curb idle down a little. The throttle response from dead stop is noticeably better than the Holley 600 cfm I had - which surprised me because this model of Edelbrook is tuned for gas mileage rather than performance. I couldn't be happier with the carb, and it looks great as well, although it takes some getting used to at first because Edelbrocks are wider than they are deep and it looked like it was sitting on engine sideways after having Holleys for so many (long and aggravating) years.

Good acceleration
Nice shifting with the shift-kit
No revs in between shifts
Tunability

Weakness:

Easiness to tune

The setup i have for my car is awesome. Most people that buy a carb and complain about it just dont have the right setup. To me, every carb is good, you just have to know what your doing and have the right setup. I have a matching edelbrock intake and cam and heads to go along with my carb and some edelbrock headers too. Some other guy wrote a review on here about his edelbrock carb being a peice, but his engine is most likely the problem. Before you buy, figure out what you need. Thats my advice.

Strength:

Nice and shiney, good for attracting crows. Will prevent tire slippage. Helps reduce speeding violations as they steal a 100 HP from your engine. Keeps Jiffy Lube in business draining the fuel out of your oil pan. Keeps engine builders working.

Weakness:

Too many to list

The crack internally after a few heat cycles and get worse from there on. The worst buy in old antiquated technology on the market. The 750 is the worst and the 800 not far behind

BG did us all a fovor by getting that quality product out of your hands and letting you embarrass all us professionals who know how stupid your review looks and how good Demon Carbs really are. If you want to rant go to Craigs List and post somnething stupid over there.

Strength:

Great price, good all around driveability. Easy to adjust and looks great.

Weakness:

So far nothing attributed to the carb itself. The fact that it sits a lot and probably gets gummed up is my fault.

I have this carb on a 73 AMC Gremlin X with a 304. It has given me great service up until this year. It's been on the car for 6 yrs and sits most of the winter months. So this winter I'm going to rebuild it and play with metering and calibrations next spring. I certainly can't complain about the carb. And would recommend it.

Model Reviewed: Thunder AVS 650 CFM

Strength:

Nearly perfect jetting right out of the box. Much more responsive than my 600 CFM (Vac sec) Holley, better mileage with no loss in power. Best of all, no more leaky floats. Installation was easy, started on the first crank - even the idle was close.

Weakness:

A little wider than the Holly, so I had to rerun my ignition wire looms.

Excellent carb. Great quality, trouble free. Much better choice than Holley or Barry Grant for street use. This went on a Ford 302, ~320 HP, 224* I/E, .500 lift on 1.6 rockers, World Products heads, 9:1 CR, small diameter long tube headers, in an ERA Cobra 289/FIA. I had been using a Holly 600 CFM vacuum secondary but was having a lot of trouble with it. Leaking floats, running rich at part throttle, uneven timing on the opening of the secondaries - sometimes to fast - bog, other times to late - big delayed burst. I just could not get it zeroed in - every time the temperature changed so the the jetting. I finally had enough with it and tried a Barry Grant Speed Demon 650. The BG Speed demon was a disaster. Primary sight glass leaked, and the secondary pump arm was mis-adjusted. Fixed those problems after a call to tech support (i.e. push in on the sight glass =80 tomake it seal, and bend the secondary pump actuator arm). Never was able to start the engine with it in. It literally spewed gas up out of the secondary squirters. Tech support said my fuel pressure was too high (even though my float levels were normal). I measured it just for grins - 6 Lbs - then sent it back for a refund. BG tech support had a terrible attitude - I'll never buy from them again. I had only heard good things prior to this - but subsequently found that many have experienced both the same problems as me - bad quality and bad tech support. That led me to the Edelbrock, because there was not much left to try. I had heard a lot of comments about them not making as much power as the Holley and BG so I found all the test info I could. That included a carb shootout from June of 1999 in Super Fords magazine, a post from a BG employee (BGTech) on HotRodders.com that dynoed both, and a variety of other articles. The bottom line is this - a dyno tuned Holley or BG will gain you, at best, about 3% additional HP wide open. The price you pay for it is that for anything other than wide open you'll get much poorer metering (i.e. bad fuel economy and throttle response). If you spend most of your time on the street and just a little or none at the drags, the Edelbrock is the best choice IMHO.
