2006 Edelbrock #1400 - 600 CFM electric choke Performance series carburetor
Really easy to install, runs great right out of the box. Looks great. The car idles much better than with either of the two Holleys I had. I'm now getting a substantial chirp out of 2nd gear with an automatic tranny and NO shift kit. Tech support line has minimal telephone-menu-hell and I spoke with a knowlegeable human on my first attempt. (I called after-the-fact to double-check compatibility, since the sticker on the box said appropriate for pre-1980s Chevys.)
No user manual! No installation instructions or even a picture of the carb with explanations of vacuum ports. Luckily I'm familiar with carburetor details after having tried to get the previous two to work for the past two years. 4 stars overall rating because now I wish I'd bought the one with the Enduroshine finish!
I know carburetor brands are similar to a religion to most car guys, but
I switched from a Holley to an Edelbrock carburetor this past month and it was the single best thing I've done for my 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I since I bought it 12 years ago. Ongoing problems with leaking Holley carbs - twice! right out the box new!! - caused me to abandon my attempts to use their products.
I drive the car in the summer and want it to perform well, but I don't race it except at the occasional "flashlight drags" that are held at a nearby airport. I'd more concerned about reliability on long trips and not having to carry tools everywhere I go than cutting an extra second or two off a quarter mile time. The Edelbrock 600 CFM (Part #1400) installs easily, but be prepared to spend an extra $25 or so for the linkage adaptor to connect the tranny kickdown rod if you have one. You'll also need the throttle cable plate kit, because the kickdown adaptor interferes with the stock location of the plate that holds the throttle cable end. I didn't realize that until the parts store was closed, so I made a throttle cable plate from some thin steel bar stock in about 10 minutes. I installed the whole thing in about an hour onto a stock 351W. The engine fired up immediately and I haven't had make any adjustments except to turn the curb idle down a little. The throttle response from dead stop is noticeably better than the Holley 600 cfm I had - which surprised me because this model of Edelbrook is tuned for gas mileage rather than performance. I couldn't be happier with the carb, and it looks great as well, although it takes some getting used to at first because Edelbrocks are wider than they are deep and it looked like it was sitting on engine sideways after having Holleys for so many (long and aggravating) years.
