Review 1 of 8

Price Paid:  $0.00 from came with used car p

Year / Model Reviewed:
1999 Boston CD 189

Summary:
if the sun is shining directly on the display it is hard to see. One needs tiny fingers to hit the right buttons espically going down the road. You really do need a manuel to figure out how to run the darn thing. Face plate will not stay on tight, thus returning volume to bottom of sound cycle.

Strengths:
Nice sound

Weaknesses:
See review, many issues.

Review 3 of 8

Price Paid:  $220.00 from partsexpress

Year / Model Reviewed:
 blaupunkt boston cd189

Summary:
When I first got this deck, I was disappointed since it dodn't sound any louder nor did it have as much bass as the factory toyota stereo. After a year, I really started to hate it more since the radio reception was weaker than factory, the display was dim in the sun, the output really wasn't that full nor loud, the xbass only caused distortion, it didn't have a subwoofer output, it seemed to take forever to load a cd, and the buttons weren't soft touch. It stopped working after 2 years when the car was in an accident. I think I paid too much, but the deck was fresh off the blaupunkt line so it was I can't complain. In the last year I owned it, it grew on me. I loved the large simple display with its pumping power meters (looks awesome in the evening/night), constant clock, preset scan, rotary control with the track skip button not even a cm away, and overall reliability. I never really liked the internal amp, xbass, nor the lack of subwoofer output. But I got an eq/line driver, 3 amps, 3 subs, and 8 main speakers soon after that made it sound great.

Strengths:
The simple display looks awesome in the early evening/night. The preset scan is nice to have since it checks all your presets automatically while you're driving. The rotary control is easy to use and the seek/skip/tune buttons are close by, keeping your fingers at east.

Weaknesses:
Weak internal amp, lack of preamp subwoofer outputs, use of Xbass past 1/2 volume caused distortion, display too dim in direct sunlight, radio reception weak, buttons were sometimes difficult to depress, and preamp output levels were low.

Similar Products Used:
Factory toyota deck, pioneer deh-1300/2300/3100/3300/p330/4300, blaupunkt nevada, and eclipse cd8443/5413r.

Review 5 of 8

Price Paid:  $138.00

Year / Model Reviewed:
 '99

Summary:
I bought this player because I wanted 4 ch. pre-amp. So far I couldn't be happier, I've had it in for 2 weeks and it has not skipped yet. It has 23x4 rms but I only use the line outs so I can't speak for it's amp power. I love the rotary control, it saves a lot of time poking on buttons. The reason I bought this player is because I owned a '95 model blaupunkt cd player which was still going strong after 5 years, the only problems it had is that the buttons were severly worn and the fm reciever had intermittent high pitched static (cd function is still excellent). If my new player lasts as long ast the old one I'll be sold on Blau for good. The only thing I can say negatively about it is that it doesn't have some of the sound enhancing capabilities of the high end recievers. Now...will it stand the test of time.

Strengths:
appearance, ergonomics (location of frequently used controls, 4 ch pre-amp, rotary knob, just about everything

Weaknesses:
the one and only thing I'm not crazy about is that if the sun is shining directly on the display it is hard to see

Similar Products Used:
'95 Blaupunkt Newport - Compares well, my new one is a higher end model but I paid much less
