from Craigslist Year / Model Reviewed: G5 12" SVC Strengths: SOUND QUALITY, doesn't sacrifice SPL, the GTR passive tunable radiator, it's underrated at 450watt rms, durability, looks, versatility, only requires 1 cubic inch of box space, pretty much everything you could want in a sub Weaknesses: Looks (for some who like flashy Audiobahn-esque subs), I only got the SVC but that's my fault, can't think of anything else... Summary: Best subwoofer I have ever owned! I have this sub in a sealed box coupled with the G5 GTR passive tunable radiator, which is moved by the soundwaves behind the sub and pushes even more air than the G5 would by itself. This GTR brings out the lower notes, and makes it seem like 50-100 watts more are being pushed to the sub.
As a package, this is the cleanest hitting subwoofer I have ever heard. Each note is extremely crisp; the sub stopping immediately after every note it hits. The odd part is that with all this sound quality, it suffers little in the SPL department. It hits nearly as hard as my Kicker S12L7 did, but obviously soooo much cleaner. This sub is definitely underrated, too. I have it tuned close to its most efficient operating range, and I think it is pushing over 500 watts RMS. The more power you give it past there, the more it begins to show a little distortion.
The sub is durable, too. The previous owner had scratched a whole layer of foam off the surround, and it didn't even pierce it. The GTR's surround is some kind of rubber compound so it is obviously durable as well.
It even scores well on the looks department. Sure, my L7 was a crowd favorite, but people are just as surprised when they see two subs in such a small box. I think it is good looking by itself also, maybe just as underrated with looks as it is with power handling. Take the sub out of the box, and the basket/frame is a work of art. Kinda makes me wish my box had plexiglass sides, but I guess I like the sleeper look :D
If you have done research on this sub, you can't look past its features, such as the coil-saving fuses that also make wiring the dvc ones down to 2 or up to 8 ohms a cinch, and the tinsel leads that "walk" along the spider. And with the GTR, you can unbolt the center cap and add or remove tuning weights to tune it for higher or lower frequencies. Too bad I didn't get the extra weights when I bought it :(
I can't complain though when I only payed $100 for it. It was worth every frikin penny and after spending months trying out subs, I don't plan on replacing this sub ever. Now I just need to find a matching pair... Similar Products Used: Sony Xplod (crap!), Pioneer IMPP (ok, box was better than sub), old school Rockford Punch's (eh.), Phoenix Gold Octane R (good SPL, poor SQ), JL 12W6 (good SQ and SPL, but can't match the G5), Volfenhag ZR12D4 (cool lookin, but crap), JL W0 (good SQ, not much for SPL), Kicker S12L7 (really good SPL, decent SQ), Memphis MC (very good SQ and SPL, likely half due to the Memphis-designed vented box), and many more. Nothing I have tested has bested the G5, but the Memphis is a close call as well as the W6
