Great gas mileage, 4x4, interior

Weakness:

location of spare tire

I got this car 8 years ago. It has been an excellent car!! It has been through a lot, taken alot of crap, and still runs just as good as the day I bought it.. It has a pretty bad oil leak coming from the valve cover, but I just make sure that it has oil. Awesome first car.. Well worth the money!! I can get by with putting $10.00 in gas on Monday and making it through the week, and I drive 2 kids to seperate schools.. Great on gas!!

Strength:

Fairly peppy 6-cylinder engine, great on snowy roads, looks fantastic for a 6-year old vehicle, its height may have saved my life when I hit a deer T-bone style. (if I'd been in my beloved Olds Ciera, it may have been hurled through the windshield)

Weakness:

It can really wobble (or feel like that) in relatively low wind on the highway. Do not overinflate your tires or handling is poor. I removed the rear headrests because they block the rear view too much. The spare tire also blocks some of the rear view, but it has to be somewhere, I guess!

I've been happy with the Tracker, I needed a 4wd vehicle to get up my driveway easily in the winter and it does this, even in reverse! It has been reliable, the seats are super comfy, that's about all I want in a vehicle.

Strength:

good on gas, it satisfies, easy to park, very compact, reliable........

Weakness:

seat belt arrangement is a pain, the back window zipper sucks.

i bought my tracker in 2000, with 78000km, i now have 306000km, with comparitively little maintenance...regualar oil changes (5000km) one clutch, brakes, timing belt, front crank oil seal...clutch pedal weld...., one exhaust connecting pipe... I love this car......every time I get in to drive it, it is a real treat.....at 90kmh it feels good, enough that i don't need to go faster......good for my license....the longest trip was 1500km non stop other than gas, coffee and pit stops. The ride is a bit choppy, but i come from a hard tail Harley-Davidson background, so it's all good. Off road is a blast, the car is good value for the dollar, and reliable, all the time.

Model Reviewed: Tracker LT V6 4x4

Strength:

Fun to drive. V6 engine and Power Button give the Tracker a great 'pep' on the highway. Look of my Tracker LT is 'great'. Excellent turning radius! Easy to drive!

Weakness:

Headrests and driver seats are uncomfortable. Drove 2 hours with windows fully frosted (except for the front windshield) during a snow storm - it took 2 hours to defrost. Catches wind when driving on the highway - can be a little scary at times. Great SUV for short people - people close to 6ft tall will feel really confined within the vehicle. Passenger space and cargo space too small. Cup holders located in awkward position for driver.

I've always wanted a Tracker ever since they first came out and decided to purchase one when I noticed that they were made larger - plus the dealer slashed the price down by $10,000 - I purchased a new 2003 leftover in 2004. Overall, I like my tracker - I joke sometimes that it's like driving a Go-Kart - but really is not. Thinking that if you're going to go ahead and purchase this model - you should opt for the LT V6 - thinking that the 4 Cylinders are probably a waste of your money - I like 'pep' that the V6 offers. I travel on the highway quite often and the 'ride' is fun - radio blares music pretty loud and the airconditioning does a 'great' job during the heat waves. Passenger and cargo space is okay - probably best if doing travelling only with 1 or 2 other persons - a total of 4 people and luggage on a trip - talk about an extremely tight squeeze. Head room and leg room does not do justice for people close to 6ft tall. I had a few friends in my car who were about 6ft tall and I had to have both of them sit in the front seat - with one of them driving, while I sat in the back seat because they had no leg room in the back even with the front seats pushed as far forward as possible for me to have room to drive. I haven't had any major problems with my Tracker - mind you, I've only had it for 7 months now. I have noticed though - that there were a few times where I had to really crank the key to start the SUV - kind of reminded me of my little crapper that wouldn't start that I use to own when I was in college - haven't had any other problems since. My Tracker is fun to drive and so far I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Model Reviewed: 2 dr Soft Top 4WD

Strength:

Tough little thing, so far reliable, nice small size, pretty good on gas for a SUV, soft top looks cheesy but is a nice option in the summer.

Weakness:

Weak engine on big inclines, fish tails/ hydroplanes a bit on wet roads, no cargo space.

Hate to admit it but I have had this car 1 year now and so far (knock on wood) it runs great. I really wanted something higher than a car,4wd,low gas mileage and cheap, this vehicle fit all that. It does not win any style contests but it is comfy, small enough to fit anywhere, runs well in the snow, and pretty durable (I am tough on cars). I even accidently took it 4 wheeling on a road I had no business to be on and it held up fine. It is a tough little thing. I am very surprised with the results. I keep looking at other SUV's because I really just don't like the look of this one but once you compare the owner reviews of same priced cars the Tracker seems to be one of the ones that people are most happy with. I really might end up keeping this one after reading all the other horror stories out there. So far it seem dependable.

Strength:

Can't say enough can improve weakneses to become strengths on any and almost all vehicles including this one.

Weakness:

Arm rest.....only comlaint i have.

Very reliable, a little rough on the suspension, but to be expected from the fact that it is such a light vehicle 5 speed manual trans 2WD 2DR convertable gas mileage is exceptional manuverability is great highway driving was a little scary at first til i added the 1 inch wheel spacers to give her a 2 inch wider track the the stability factor rose dramaticaly espically in windy conditions will hopefully be converting to a 4WD here soon in the future. Seats need a bit more bolstering the cup holders are perfect for a stick shift because they are out of the way and actually at the center of gravity for the vehicle unlike others i have driven/rode in as far as driveing down roads with grooves in them it is the tires and alignment that cause the washboard side to side motion. Brakes non-abs is what i prefer more control over the brake threshold and with a little pratice you can get the tracker to stop at a shorter distance that one with abs and not skid the wheels the factory rubber on all vehicles will almost alwasys stinck simply for the fact of they are cheap tires the convertable top is nice and with a little practice can be put up and down quickley after you figure out which snaps, clasps, slide ins, and zippers to undo first. The it can be accomplished in little to no time and same with putting it up. The cd player could be a little better by have a bit longer anti-skip function on it. first gear needs to be geared a little higher in my opinion same with second but third and up are perfect for city and hwy driveing. Tis a little noisy at speed above 60 but that is to be expected with almost any convertable wheel spacers also helped out in keeping the new 215/75R15 tires from rubbing against any of the components of the suspension and frame plus like i said earlier increased the stability of the vechile at hwy speeds and around town. As far as people who complain about the brakes, body lean around corners and so forth i suggest that you look at your driveing habits and think about what you are saying/typeing not to piss anybody off but there are drivers out their who need to just slow down increase the distance between them and the car infont of them and so forth, have been rear ended twice since i bought the vechile because of tailgaters and so forth. The reason most people complain about the body lean is because they are taking corners to fast and need to slow down just a little and they would relize that it handles much better in a corner when you only go over the recomended corner speen by 5 miles on dry days and the limit on bad days in the snow use best judjment.

Powerful V6 (except on inclines), great stereo system, great 4WD system

Weakness:

Poor interior quality, not-so-great brakes, smallish interior accomodations

I was the proud owner of a Chevy Tracker until recently when I got ran into by a commercial truck, and it was totaled. That's life. This was a joy to own, and it had everything I needed: a small vehicle that was "rough and ready" and could get itself out of any jam quickly. The Tracker is truly a rugged little SUV. My model had a V6, which made for plenty of passing power on a busy interstate. For an SUV, gas comsumption is not terrible, just not that great either. The four wheel drive has gotten me out of plenty situations on the icy streets of Chicago with little effort. And I really loved the audio output the stereo system had. The two years I had it, it was very reliable--I only need to get new brake pads once. And besides, my car got creamed by a truck, and didn't put a scratch on me. It holds up well. Now, here's the bad stuff. Brakes are rather poor--they are not sensitive at all, and braking distance is poor, even with ABS. The plasticky interior is not high quality either. It scratched way to easily, the black coating on the stereo buttons wore off quickly, and my plastic guards on the bottom of each door sill cracked. Finally, for a car this size, interior space is tiny. Trackers are the same size as RAV4s and their interiors are much larger in comparison. Just like a spouse, Trackers aren't perfect. But if you treat them right, they'll love you forever.

Strength:

The steering system is good and responsive a good feature on a sport suv. The engine really kicks out the power hard when you really need it. Finally the power mode switch really can make the vehicle take off when you need it too. I consder it the closest thing to "turbo boost" ever.

Weakness:

The transfer case can be a bit hard to shift to 4 wheel drive above 35. The passenger compartment fuse panel is hard to acess and is almost buried in wires. The engine compartment fuse holder can use labels for the fuses.

I love it. I had a jimmy and a cavalier before and the tracker is a fusion of both vehicles best traits. It has the cat-like agility, fuel ecomomy and size of the cavalier along with the brute strength, stance, intimidating presence and room of a jimmy. Its the perfect compromise for someone who really wants an suv with it all where it really counts. The 24 valve V6 is really a good engine along with the tranny and transfer case it really powers the vehicle through anything. The systems on board are really easy to figure out and periodic maintenace checkpoints are easy to find and acess. The cargo area is nicely designed and the tie downs are a plus especially when youre hauling an akward load. Overall its a great vehicle espiecially for someone who wants to get onto the suv scene but not in a big way.
