Expert Review: 2009 Honda Pilot - Honda's 8 Passenger SUV
Expert Rating: 4.5 stars

"The 2009 model has been re-designed, and while it’s squarer shaped than previous years, it looks a lot more bad-*ss."

Review 1 of 180

Price Paid:  $24700.00 from Miller Auto Team

Year / Model Reviewed:
2008 EX-L AWD

Summary:
Before anyone wonders how I got this vehicle for $24,700, traded a Accord and incentives from Honda.

Have owned (2) new Honda's before, both sedans. Took the next step into the Pilot. This is one sweet ride. Leather heated seats, XM Radio is nice too. Handles great, smooth and quiet. I thought about purchasing an American product, then came to my senses in about 2 seconds. Honda's sell themselves.

Strengths:
Quality, Honda reliability

Weaknesses:
No telecoping steering wheel, that's about it

Similar Products Used:
none

Review 2 of 180

Price Paid:  $0.00 from Capitol City Honda

Year / Model Reviewed:
2008 Pilot SE

Summary:
I previously owned a 2003 Honda Pilot and absolutely loved it. Then, inexplicably after three years I started having the check engine light coming on under evap codes. After multiple repairs, we decided to trade it in so as not to deal with it anymore. Unfortunately, i made the mistake of trading it in for a 2008 Pilot SE and after just six months, am experiencing the same problem and am considering arbitration under the Lemon Law. Good luck to you if you choose to buy a Honda Pilot.

Review 4 of 180

Price Paid:  $23384.00 from Davis Honda

Year / Model Reviewed:
2007 Honda Pilot LX

Summary:
I was very reluctant to get this vehicle because I have had such great luck with two Toyota's that each gave me more than 200,000 miles. I decided to get rid of the four wheel drive Tacoma because my wife I just had a baby and the truck was'nt a suitable vehicle for transporting a baby. After a long search, I decided that the Pilot was the best compromise/choice for us. At first I was not at all enthusiastic about my choice, it just wasnt my Tacoma that I just loved. However, this vehicle has really proved itself in the six months that I have had her. I believe that it is the best value for the money on the market right now. It does everything well. The safety features with the curtain airbags is excellent. The accessibilty is wonderful, very easy to get a carseat in and out of. We also like the versatility of being able to lower both rows of seats to nearly flat which creates a tremendous amount of cargo space. The roominess of the interior is really nice, it feels like a much bigger SUV than it really is.
We have already put on more than 13,000 miles and have not had a single maintenance problem. Hopefully, that will continue.
Driving the Pilot has been a great experience. We have taken it on many long distance trips and ride has been smooth and comfortable. There is some road noise but I cant tell that it's any worse than any other vehicle that I have ridden in. Gas mileage has also been surprisingly good. I average between 25 and 27 MPG on the highway. For a 4,000 LB. SUV, I think thats pretty good.
In summary, I could not be any happier with this vehicle. I would definitely buy this Pilot all over again. The one major negative that I can say about the vehicle is that I think Honda commited a serious design flaw in the rear hatch. It only opens up to about 5'10" which could be very irritating if your taller than that, you could really bang your head good when loading up the car.

Strengths:
Storage space, roominess, access in and out, gas mileage, reliability, does everything pretty well. Great value for the money.

Weaknesses:
The honda radio has bad reception, the speakers are pretty bad also.
The rear hatch should open up a little higher.

Review 5 of 180

Price Paid:  $31000.00 from Autoexchange Europe

Year / Model Reviewed:
2007 Honda Pilot EX-L

Summary:
We were looking for an SUV with AWD that had a third row seat... The choices finally came down to the Pilot and the Volvo XC-90. In the end, we went with the Pilot because it was 7000.00 USD cheaper and it had better ratings from Consumer Reports. I picked up the Pilot from the port in Bremerhaven and drove it home on the Autobahn a few days ago and it performed flawlessly. It had plenty of pickup for the autobahn and was very manueverable in European parking lots (usually smaller spaces and more confined areas). It was also super comfortable with huge amounts of space - it is in fact, like driving a mini-van. The fit and finish have been 100 percent across the board though I'd like a little more capability in the audio department - the radio has an AUX output button but no line in - a kind of poor design. Also, while the driver's visibility is excellent overall, visibility directly behind the vehicle is limited leading to some dicey backing. Recommend getting the reverse warning system as a backup. I was unable to get it through my dealer so I'm ordering it as an OEM part for installation with another local dealer. Also, the Pilot is a bit thirsty - about 21 - 22 miles per gallon on the autobahn at 70 MPH. Finally, there is some road noise but not nearly as bad as my Xterra.

Strengths:
Driver's overall visibility, fit and finish, the amount of room you would find in a minivan, very comfortable ride, price - value for the money

Weaknesses:
Fuel efficiency, radio is limited in capability - no AUX input for MP3 or IPod, radio controls on the wheel are limited as well, reverse visibility poor

Similar Products Used:
Nissan Xterra, Volvo XC90.
