Strength:

After driving it for 9.5 years, it is the most reliable car I've owned.

Weakness:

I bought this car in 2000 and have had no major problems with it.

This Jeep was a LE model ... have been driving it for almost 10 years now in Canadian weather, no less, it has 180K kilometers on it. So far in 10 ears, I've spent about $7,000 on any what I would call major repairs. I keep the car well maintained, reg oil changes etc. and have had no troubles whatsoever with it. What can I say, other than, I love my Jeep!! It's getting old now, and I would be very loathe to have to give it up eventually ...

Model Reviewed: Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 5.7L

Strength:

5.7L Hemi puts out serious power with reasonably okay economy.
Full time 4WD with traction galore.
Lots of space to put things in the back.
Comfort.
Height.
Towing.

Weakness:

Fuel economy.
Not crazy about the chrome grille.
Doesn't do my laundry.

I love my Jeep! Several months ago it was time for me to get another vehicle; I had been driving an '02 Ford Ranger for five years and, while a decent little truck, I wanted something more comfortable with decent power and low miles.

Besides being comfortable and powerful, I wanted a lot of car for the money. Used German luxury sedans were top contenders, but I started looking at some other vehicles and really liked the Grand Cherokee because of its height advantage as well as boasting more cargo room.

It took a little while to find the right one, but I did. My Limited had 27k miles on it when I bought it and is a 4x4 with the 5.7L Hemi, which give it surprisingly solid performance for a lumbering SUV. More surprising is how comfortable and feature laden it is: leather seats, heated in the front; rain sensing wipers; automatic headlights (and brights); navigation system; 6cd/mp3 player; climate control; towing package; full spare tire; tire pressure monitors; 40/60 folding rear seats; satellite radio; power locks, windows, and mirrors; some others I'm probably forgetting.

I don't really do any offroading, but I have the option and that's nice. Speed bumps don't have to slow you down if you don't want them to and rough roads are just less rough than they used to be because of the great suspension. Better than that, though, Quadra-Drive ensures that I don't have to worry about traction. Uneven surfaces, no problem; wet surfaces, no problem; gravel, no problem; dirt road, no problem. I've TRIED to make it slip and failed spectacularly. I did manage to get one of the tires to chirp once during a full throttle launch into a turn, but I still had plenty of traction.

Taken as a whole, this really IS a lot of car for the money. I'm very satisfied with the purchase I made and will probably run this Jeep into the ground.

It does have a limitation that should be mentioned, however:

If fuel economy is a serious consideration for you, this vehicle may not be for you. With the 4x4 and the 5.7L, my average over the last 4 months is about 15.2 MPG. This is computed manually and not taken from the... optimistic... onboard computer reading. I drive pretty aggressively, so I could see that figure going up into the mid 15s. I probably do 40/60 city/highway driving. Anecdotally, the 5.7 2WD gets a bit better gas mileage, coming in around 16.4 (family member has one).

Personally, I don't really care all that much about fuel economy. My Ranger had a lowly 2.3L 4 cylinder, weighed a couple thousand pounds less, and averaged 22 mpg. My '74 Charger with a 7.2L gets about 10.

For power and performance, this rig is hard to beat. I can also take home a bathroom vanity or a big screen TV in the back and I moved from one house to another using my jeep and a trailer I towed.

Strength:

Fit and finish is very good. The ride is smooth yet firm, more like a car than an SUV. Looks nice.

Weakness:

Gas mileage is horrendously bad!

We have the 4.7L V8 Flex Fuel motor Laredo, and got a good deal on it used. However, the gas mileage on this vehicle is heinously bad (about 13 mpg), and there are huge, dangerous 'blind spots' on the two front pillars where the windshield meets the dashboard. The ride is smooth and firm, and fit and finish are otherwise OK. If we had known the mileage would be so terrible, we would not have bought the vehicle. This is a prime reason why foreign made vehicle have surpassed American ones. While other same sized SUV's are 6 cylinders, and get 19 to 22 mpg, this gas guzzler has 8, and gets 13 mpg. Why couldn't Chrysler/Jeep have done the same?

Model Reviewed: Cherokee Overland 4X4

Strength:

Overall power is great! Conveniences within the vehicle continually blow my mind. I find out new things about the vehicle all the time. Very Nice

Weakness:

Resale sucks and because of that, I will own this vehicle until the wheels fall off. I have had to have the transmission changed out after only 42,000 miles. I've also had to have a rear differential case replaced. I bought the car with 42,000 miles on it and I've only put 7,000 in 12 months. Luckily, I purchased an extended warranty.

I must state that the Overland definitely caught my eye when merely passing by the dealership. I truly like all of the conveniences the Overland has to offer, even the power is nice in situations where I find myself needing to merge into rush hour traffic. I understood, purchasing the vehicle, that the gas mileage wouldn't be that great. I average 15-19 mpg and better on the highway at 65mph. One of my biggest complaints is that the DVD system, when in use, causes a huge obstruction in my rear view mirror. Overall happy with the purchase.

Model Reviewed: Grand Cherokee Laredo V8

Strength:

V8 Engine performance is very enjoyable.
AWD Traction in snow/ice is second to none in my experience.

Weakness:

Towing. If I weren't towing that size trailer, I'd want to keep this SUV forever, and replace it with another '04 Grand Cherokee when I was done with this one.

I have been driving my '04 Grand Cherokee for about 2 years now. I test drove both the inline 6 cylinder and the V8. The V8 made the driving experience much more exciting. The acceleration is terrific, where the performance from the 6 cylinder was just average. The MPG that I've experienced has ranged from 14 around town to 19 on extended driving at 55-65 mph. Around 75 mph on relatively level roads produces around 17 MPG. From what I found in my research, and what is listed by the manufacturer, there is only about 1 MPG difference between the 6 and 8. That slight difference makes the V8 performance well worth it! In speaking with someone who has driven one, I was told that he found the 2005 Grand Cherokee's V8 didn't have the same acceleration as the '04.
The AWD performance in snow and ice is awesome! I feel like I can get through anything. That includes deep snow in the woods and on two tracks in Northern Michigan during November and December. On slick roads, ice or snow, the traction is terrific. If I start to slide at all, staying on the gas (not giving it more) lets the AWD system take over and puts power to the tire that needs it and straightens right out.
The only complaint I have is regarding towing. I just bought a 22 foot travel trailer that fits in the weight range for the Jeep. However, it still compresses the rear suspension significantly, even with a weight distribution set up on it. Trying to tow on the highway was a little frustrating as going more than 50 mph really sucked up the gas and made me question its ability to tow this trailer (3700# rating).
The passenger room is good. Back seat contains 2 car seats with sufficient room. My Grand Cherokee has cloth seats (my preference) that are very comfortable. I don't like hot leather in the summer or cold leather in the sub-zero temperatures during the winter (although heated seat(s?) are available. But I don't think any comfort is given up with the cloth.
In summary, I love the performance of the V8 (when not towing) and the AWD system can't be beat!

Model Reviewed: Grand Cherokee

Strength:

Good power, has been reliable, pretty low maintenance, looks nice (but that is no longer an option past '05). Nice fit and finish. Nice dials with the white background (get a lot of comments on that, too.)

Weakness:

Still a little louder and rougher ride than should be. Cheap wheels. No passenger key lock, gas struts under hood, goofy AC system.

Previously owned a '92 Cherokee Laredo. Always wanted a Grand Cherokee for an improved ride. Saw they were destroying the looks of the Grand Cherokee in the '05 model so I got an '04 while I could. I got the Hi-Performance V-8 - one of the few things Jeep has been doing right - having adequate power. My '92 had a I6 4.0 and it was a great engine. Now they messed that up, too, so you get an UNDER powered 6 cylinder OR a V-8 which is probably a little much.

Overall liked the fit and finish - something people remarked on quite a bit. Got the Limited Edition (the upper Limited with the sunroof and heated seats).

Before purchasing it, I immediately saw where they had cut corners compared to the '93 edition. The VERY nice 5 spoke wheels of the '92 which were solid alloy are a very cheesy chrome-PLASTIC covering (who knows what underneath). Not impressive at all and almost didn't get it for that.

I noticed they don't have a key lock in the passenger side - another area where the manufacturers are "training" the consumers to accept less. Now I have to lug some stupid, clunky, bulky electronic device in order to enter the car from the passenger side. Isn't a single, slim KEY a little more elegant solution? I think so.

Noticed the hood is held up by those stupid, fallible, gas struts. WHY????? My first car's hood was held up with a spring-loaded hinge, the '92 had a prop. OK, not as good but at least it is reliable. NOW they put these stupid struts in. The SCAM is that now you have to BUY them every few years.

The AC system is still about marketing more than function. The '92 was very straightforward. The '04 edition has dials and buttons and always defaults to letting "fresh" (read: exhaust fumes from the car in front of you) air in. I want it to stay on recirculate but it won't. Also, the windows fog up on the inside more than is expected and turning on defrost means the recirculate goes off. So, you can either drive blind or suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning. Some choice.

Strength:

The technology in this vehicle is amazing. The windshield wipers are automatic; and not only does it tells you that the tire pressure is low but also gives you the actual values for each tire!

Weakness:

Its small. The DVD obstructs the rear view. Back seat okay for small child. Difficult for three adults or even one adult seated next to a car seat. We have one two year old but will likely have to trade this vehicle in should we decide to extend our family.

Quite impressed with all the amenities to include bluetooth, Navigation, DVD, rear parking camera, hard drive, etc. However I believe the engine to be louder than past SUV's I have owned not to mention much smaller. If you are looking for a roomy vehicle (something similiar to a Durango) this is not the vehicle for you. The rear seating is quite cramped and the overall feel of the vehicle is more like a car and not an SUV. Having traded in a 2004 Durango for it, I personally have not experienced massive savings at the pump.
If I had to do again, I would not purchase this vehicle.
