Price Paid:
$350.00 Strengths: 5 channel amp Weaknesses: Poor build quality No protection from annoying alternator whine Horrible reliability Gets very hot when in use Summary: Compared to the Sony Xplod, this amp really stinks. I've had this amp for about 3 months, during which I had to endure the annoyance of alternator whine. I thought it was something wrong with my setup, but one day the MTX Thunder405 blew up (smoke came out from somewhere), and then I had to swap amps. I bought a Sony Xplod 5 channel amp for about 350 bucks, about the same price paid for the MTX, and it was great. No alternator whine, no more popping from the speakers.. it was simply one of the best amps I have used. This is really surprising because I've always thought that Sony products were horrible in build quality now. Even the 150 dollar Clarion 4 channel amp that I tried for a bit had no alternator whine.
The MTX techs were of no help, saying that it was a poor install job that caused it, and that they would need to talk through the whole procedure to correct the alternator whine with the installer. As far as I'm concerned, I'm dumping the MTX Thunder 405, at a loss of 350 bucks, and I'm gonna go with something else.. PPI perhaps, or maybe I'll keep that Sony..
Bottom line, I do not recommend the MTX Thunder405 at ALL.. from the experience with their techs, I do not recommend any MTX product period. Similar Products Used: Sony Xplod 5 channel amp Clarion 4 channel amp
