-Expensive to maintain I bought this baby for about $37K drive-out around April '98. Ever since then, I've been driving the hell out of her. The car is pure plesure on the road. I have a manual transmission and pretty much learned to drive one on this car. I cannot explain how much I fun I have everyday just taking the car out on the road. The gear box, acceleration and handling are all just so mixed in perfectally. I have added a Top Speed cat-back exhaust system, BMP Design hi-flo racing air filter, OZ Italy Sinfonia rims, and Yokahama AVS Sport tires to the car. Buyers beware; once you start to fix this car up, you may be unleashing a monster inside yourself. The feeling of making something almost perfect even better may get addicting. I would definitely advice getting this car. There is the newer model out, and I have heard nothing but good about it. If you want performance, build quality, and a classy car, go for it. |

Strength:
Best handling of any car I own.
Weakness:
Service/parts prices I would only purchase this car again towards my retirement, and if I'm rich. The car is not versatile compared to most cars in this price range or lower. It simply drives like one of the best. You can get by with a lower-priced car. Similar Products Used: (1996)Volvo 850 GLT |

Dreadful steering -- lots of "play" The quality and reliability are much better than the previous generation. The steering and auto trans are worse. I needed the new model for the additional head and leg room. Similar Products Used: 1996 328iA |

Brake dust is too much specially the front brakes even with I used to drive a tricked-out Golf GTI VR6 before I got the BMW. I was heartbroken when i sold it, but the BMW 323i is like heaven on earth. All the reviews you read in the mags Similar Products Used: It's in class by itself. No competition. |

323i
Strength:
Good power, low-end torque, Hnadling, Feel, Steering, Stereo, Sunroof, and everything else
Weakness:
It's not an M3 This car is unbelievable. The engine and transmission can't be beat. The 323 and 328i both provide excellent power and torque for both generations, the torque loving baby boomers as well as us gen-x rev happy Honda drivers. If your going to buy a 323i, I suggest the premium package with larger wheels and plenty of other neat options, as well as a sunroof which really opens the car up as well as the 6-disc changer and Harmon Kardon stereo which really rocks. The brakes, suspensions, and chasis are rock solid. This is the first BMW I've owned, and I don't think I will ever drive anything else. This 5-speed is unlike any other manual I've ever used, its so smooth, up and down-shifting at any engine speed is a breeze. The onboard computer is good, but I wish there was another clock display somewhere. Gas mileage is about 20 miles to the gallon the way I drive which is not surprising, but I've averaged almost thirty on trips. Similar Products Used: M3 |

BMW 318ti
Strength:
Quick, agile, nible, light, and beautiful all describe the BMW 318ti perfectly. The car has many good aspects and a few minor faults. It is a little underpowered, but for a 1.8 liter engine, it's definitely quick. I ran the car on the track and did a respectable 16.2 sec/quarter mile (Bone Stock!) The car is suprisingly roomy for such a small car. The hatch and the rear folding seats are great for people who have to move fairly large items from time-to-time. The car is absolutely beautiful and with a set of 17" BMW wheels (like the E36 ///M3 wheels or the 17" wheels off of the 3-series make it look mean.) Due to the small engine size and very tight suspension, it handles like a dream. An excellent car for those who want a nice autocross racer/daily driver.
Weakness:
A few weeknesses are the small engine size. I personally like 4-cylinder cars, so the 143 bhp doesn't bother me, but for those who want 6+ cylinders, I would recommend the 323i or the 328i. However, BMW does have a new "ti" coming out that may have a 6-cyl in it, so look out for that one. Another downfall is a very restrictive exhaust system. Great Car! M3
Strength:
Fun factor of 9.5 on a scale of 10. Not too many cars that can match the M3's performance and handling in its price range. BMW Engineers did an excellent job of designing and building a high performance car that can get you into a lot of trouble with highway patrol.
Weakness:
-Expensive to maintain when service is required What more can I say. This is the car that raised the mark for high performance sports cars and sports sedans. All of the written reviews and magazine articles were telling the truth. Overall, the M3 is one of the best handling sports sedans and it has lots of power to play with. Plus, you get the benefits of German engineering and comfort. This car does well picking groceries or going all out the race track. Similar Products Used: '88 BMW M3 |
