Strength:

running gear. suspension. well balanced

Weakness:

maintenance costs are going to be high. i've been quoted £500 for an inspection 2 service.

incredible car. first bmw i've owned. defn not dissapointed. quite, smooth and powerful. automatic windscreen washers, abs, traction, leather, memory seats, reversing passenger side mirror. this is truely a fantastic car. i'm worried about the service costs but i'm probably a good 4 months from that. 4.4L V8 has ample torque and doesn't use as much fuel as i thought it would. 430miles for a tank. cruises at 100m/h easily. transmission super quiet and smooth. (car has done 91K)

GPS, 10.4 Speakers with 6-disc changer and DSP, iDrive-free, Fast, Handling is good, good color (green on grey), Superb sound quality.

Weakness:

Cup-holders are very flimsy indeed. Once I was accelerating with a full cup of coffee and the whole thing spilled onto the shifter. Back to keeping it between the legs. My old Audi had a manual and AWD. Why can't they make a 740xiL with a manual tranny? No Rear side airbags and only a lapbelt and no headrest in the center-rear position.

Exellent all-around car! Every day I discover something more that I like about the car. A wonderful Luxury at an affordable price used. In addition to my 1991 Mercedes 300TE 4Matic I have my dream garage. Thank-you BMW for producing such a wonderful product. I will be a repeat customer for a long time! Great replacement for my 1987 Audi 5000s Quattro!

Safety, Safety, Safety, a Heavy car that handles well enough to manuver and avoid accidents, and rolling over, plus loaded with every safety feature you can think of, including 1/4 inch glass windows! Huge back seat !!! My three small children (2 in car seats) fit easily. Excellent in the snow! Great gas mileage. Heated steering wheel. Fun to drive and a quiet competent cruiser, very reliable, best powerplant on the road (V12).

Weakness:

The car has alot of technology, sometimes it (The car) thinks there is something wrong when really there is not.

This is the nicest mass produced affordable (Used) car on the market! No other car is easier and more fun to drive than the 750il. Don't make the mistake (Like the guy on the review before this one) and buy a 740il, there is only a few thousand dollars different in the used market to upgrade to the 750il, it is well worth it! I have had no problems with mine. I purchased it with 53,000 miles and now it has 69,000 miles on it. All I've done is take it in for an oil change and tire balancing. Gas mileage is excellent in this car. If I drive it like a race car I still get 19 mpg if I baby it (Normal driving) I get 22-24 mpg. That is twice what I get out of my wife's v6 Chevy Trailblazer when I baby that. The engine has the best power delivery of any car, it pulls hard right up to 155 mph ! The transmission is also outstanding. This car is rated at 322 hp, but it was rated at half throttle! I have never driven a nicer car, and you know what? My cup holders work fine !!

Strength:

Absolutely beautiful, great handling and acceleration. Plenty of room and very comfortable. Many nice little extras (but they are a two-edged sword). Heavy and solid..holds the road. Great car for a road trip.

Weakness:

Okay here we go. 1. As others have noted the cup holders are poor. What annoyed me most is that the cup holders arent even easy to fix and I refuse to take a car in to the dealer for a cup holder - but I can overlook that minor detail 2. 6 disk cd changer in the trunk - you've got to be kidding me...this car sold for over $65000 6 years ago and that was the best they could do... 3. Cell phone/external radio restrictions - The car has a warning that cell phone use in the vehicle may cause electrical problems that the warranty will not cover. If I can use a cell phone in a $12000 Neon why cant I use it in a $65000 BMW 5. Gas guzzler - I could accept this if that was the only prob 6. Maintenance - very expensive. I could deal with high maint cost if I didnt think the car would go to the shop several times a year for random things. Plus everything is so complicated that even things you could normally do yourself have to be done by the dealer. And dont forget it has to be BMW parts so forget buying a battery, brake pads, thermostats, etc from the Autozone. Double the regular price and thats probably what you will pay for the BMW part plus the $95 and hour labor charge. 7. Although I like the handling of the car I dont think it is good for quick runs. The size makes it somewhat cumbersome...especially when you're in a lot of traffic. 8. 1 more small thing - The door can not be manually unlocked from the passenger side. In addition, the door can only be unlocked from the inside by a button on the center console and the car door has to be closed for it to work. Finally, I bought my car with 54000 miles and the dealer had to put new brakes and resurface the rotors right after I bought it. The heater on the drivers side is also intermittent. Although its a simple fix the dealer told me because of where the repair is located it'll take a full day of work to get to it and fix which means several hundred dollars in labor costs.

ALL THAT GLITTERS AIN'T GOLD!!! Overall not worth the money. I've only had the car for about a month and I am thinking about trading it back in. As far as mechanical problems go I know that can vary between identical cars but there are several design problems in the BMW that annoy me. When I test drove it they didnt seem that bad but after a few weeks it really became annoying. Despite the long post below I am not a picky person. However, when you claim to have the ultimate driving machine and slap on the ultimate price I expect close to the ultimate vehicle (all things considered). When I buy a BMW I expect better performance, fewer maintenance problems and better reliability than from Toyota and Honda...unfortunately that is not the case.

Super comfy seats and ride - trips that take hours are nothing. Easy to drive for a big car - no issues on depth perception. Great power to pass or accelerate when you need to. Tight car, no vibration on the steering wheel at any speed.

Weakness:

Just having to constantly clean the breakdust off the rims.

I had never owned a luxury car, but always knew my first would be a BMW. I've loved them since I got my driver's license, and my motto now is "if I can't drive a 7, anything else will do." I bought it with 85K on it (plus cert p/o warr till 100K), and it drives like a brand new car. No noises, ticks, squeaks, etc. I have never been so comfortable in a car seat before - I actually like my commute to work now, and am saddened when I pull in the garage at night. If the car had autopilot, I could sleep at the wheel. I believe I have very little if any ego, but boy do I love the feeling of driving this car. When my wife drives it, sometimes I like to sit in the back seat to just enjoy the roominess. And I love the respect you get from people who know cars. So far, no problems, but I figure a couple grand a year is worth it if necessary in maintenance.

Strength:

Smooth, powerful and effortless acceleration. Room enough to hold 4 guys (or girls I guess) over 6'4" with ease. Pleasure to drive at 45mph or 75mph.

Weakness:

Cup holders obviously an issue with this car, mine were not operable when I bought it. And my '89 Camry had an equally good if not better factory sound system (really). There is hardly any bass to speak of.

Bought this baby with 119,000 miles on it. It needs a 120K service and probably some cats so they off set the price I paid. This car is a complete dream. I had been considering the Lexus LS 400 which is a great car but lacks the pure driving pleasure of the 740. Upgrading from a 1989 Camry I am flying high (until the first repair/maintenance bills). It is a remarkably well-balanced car. Definitely a head turner. Plan to have it for years.

When you see a BMW near or far, you know what it is. Class, stlye and Prestige. Unlike its competition, you are guessing which line it is, and then ,who makes it, Chrysler(Mercedes),Ford (Jaguar),Lexus (Toyota) you get the hint. Powerful engine, nav system, voice activated dialing of phone, tight handling, and my wife loves the heated steering wheel.Rain senor wipers, and ski package.6 disc cd player, soft close trunk, service and road service are unmatched.

Weakness:

Brake dust ,interior wood trim scratches easily, touchy nav system, but you can voice it.

This is our 5th BMW. I was told 5 years ago to lok at the Mercedes line. So, we went to the local dealer, was treated like we were too young,(31 at the time) and wanted to drive the S class. Well, needless to say, I left un-impressed w/ not only the lack of professionalism, but trying to judge my income based on my age...Big Mistake...,drove directly to the BMW dealer close to home, was treated w/ respect and courtesy. Told them I was interested in the(back then)95 740 il.Test drove the car, and even took this car for a day. Then I drove this car to another local Mercedes dealer to compare side by side. Thank God I did, fit and finish, quality were well beyond that of the Mercedes, and this made me think, "Why do people think Mereceds is superior over the other brands"? It took me about 5 minutes to concluded my decision. Now we have had 5 BMW's since then,Now own the 2001 740 Il and love it. I have to chuckle as I see a Mercedes now, as they all look like Toyota Avalons or a Lexus. If Iam going to pay 80,000 plus for a car, I don't want people to have to guess which generic car is it? If I want a company that has so watered down their fleet, and no longer has the "wow" factor, then I would go to the local Chrysler.................I mean Mercedes dealer and buy one. The 745Il will be our next car this year. I am not sold on the rear end style, but I am willing to give that up for the BMW tag of class, prestige and over all unique appearance that the rivals have muddied.
