Strength:

Big A$$ car. Love the size and the fell. There is nothing like driving a Bimmer compared to the others we''ve owned. I think the X5 handled better than the Lexus. The 7 just has a totally different fell than the Lexus. Awesome gearing when coming out of corners, always knows the right gear. The look is classic, and non dated. The 95-01 is the best looking of all time.

Weakness:

Like everyone else, the cupholders suck. Hey BMW, get a clue, this aint no Ferrari. People actually drvie these things. 6 Disc in the trunk is weak, BMW has had ABS since the 70''s, and other manufacturers have 6 Disc in the dash and your''re still in the trunk... Get real. The navigation system is subpar... bigtime. My 99 TL is 1000000000X better, and easier to operate. Radio also sucks, we have the DSP and the Lexus has way more bass.

Great car with a few weaknesses that I''ll discuss later. In the last two years, my wife and I have had a 99 Acura TL, 98 Exploder EB, 2001 BMW X5. We currently have a 00 740iL and 98 Lexus. All cars were excellent except the Exploder. Each car has it strengths and weakness''. The Acura gave way to the X5, the Exploder was sold for a loss, and the X5 gave way to Lexus and now we have the 7 with the Lexus up for sale. We test drove the 7 prior to buying the X5 and fell in love with it, but the X5 was newer and won out. The X5 has some quality issues we didn''t like, the dealer service sucked also so we unloaded it for the Lexus. The 7 was still calling us and we finally got into a 00 Silver IL, with Black Leather, non sport with 20000 miles.

Strength:

The power of the BMW engine. I love the engine sound when you step on the gas. The car feels so solid at high speeds; my lexus LS400 shakes when it goes over 85mph. Feels like your driving a tiny sports car. Telescopic steering wheel is very useful. Seats are very supportive and holds you tight on cornering. I knew I wanted this car when I hit that tight corner going 60. the car is just dead solid.

Weakness:

baaaad cup holders. seat controls are little complicated. BMW dealer service can kiss my ...you know. LS400 is quieter and smoother but 740il is better in performance categories. if your looking for good service from a dealer get a lexus; the car itself drives like a doughnut but lexus people don''t seem to care.. they don''t know a thing about performance.

The best car on the road today. Period. I had a Lexus LS400 which really dissapointed me in repair costs and it handles really bad. 740iL handles better than sports cars, and feels like your driving a very tiny car. I thought about sclass or another LS400 but both cars look just pathetic and can''t perform. It has heck of a room in the back; it''s a limo literally. The car is very reliable and safe. I get a smiley face when I hit the pedal. looks same as 2001 model. 2002 new ones look like crap. I really want to get a 2001 740iL Sports package ...the car is very easy to live with. GO get that bmw 740iL !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Premium stereo could be better. The trunk mounted CD changer is a hassle. Cup holder are adequate at best

WOW !! This is a magnificient automobile. The ride and power are supreme. It handles extremely well for a luxo-boat. I traded in a ''97 528i...the difference is incredible. The comfort features are great and it sures does live up to its reputation as "The Ultimate Driving Machine"

Strength:

Ultimate Driving Experience, tight cornering, best engine excelleration in its class. All you have to do is tap the excellerator and your neck snaps back into the head rest. The steering wheel with the sport pakcage enables you to feel the road like no other automobile. The nav system which is optional is a breath taking improvement over the old nav system as well as the old multi user orange display. The trunk is huge and the xenon lights make driving in the dark like driving during the day.

Weakness:

It has a 6 disk cd player in the trunk but it could use a cd player option in the front instead of the tape deck which is hidden behind the navigation console.

Driving on a beutiful country road has never been more exilirating than with my 530i. From the moment you push your foot down and hear the purr of the 220+ Straight six engine you know you are driving the Ultimate Driving Machine. I drive back and forth from northern Vemront to New York City and what once took five and a half hours to drive has been shaved down to four and a half. It's not only speed but the ability to pass large milk trucks on single lane highways in VT day or night is something that you haven't experienced to the fullest till you've had a BMW in your hands.
I believe that in any configuration the 5 series is a car that has made history.

The BMW is a great car. It has a great engine and is very smooth. Yet, it also is very luxurious. The features are great and has an easy-to-read dash board. It is a great family car with enough space for 5 passengers to live comfortably.

Strength:

Great drive train, Great looks, Excellent build quality. Almost everything you ever need come standard, including GPS and StarTAC cell phone that's integrated with the GPS as part of the emergency system. The stock version (without Sports Package) is powerful, handles very well and rides smoothly. Acceleration is breath taking. Gas mileage is reasonable (~19MPG in town) and it did not require gas guzzler tax (the Sports Package model does).

Weakness:

It came with the cold weather package and the "comfort seat" option with the "bun messager". I found the comfort seat's front thigh support lacking. That's my only complaint.

Total price around $68K. This is a luxury car that's sporty and made for people who love to drive. Highly recommended if you are deciding between Lexus LS400, Audi A8, and MB S430. Unless you really want the "limo" size leg room in the back seat the iL version is unnecessary.

The acid test for me will be the New England winter and I'll post another review after some experience in the snow.

Handling, performance, power, classic yet understated exterior style, interior room and comfort, solidly built, excellent integrated phone, voice command for phone and GPS. Everything was standard and bought below suggested retail.

Weakness:

Premium stereo a joke, trunk mount CD inconvenient, CD ROM based GPS needs upgrading.

I love driving this car. Previous car was Lexus GS 400 and if I could put the Lexus stereo and DVD based touch screen GPS in the BMW 740, I would have the perfect car. I'll look to the aftermarket experts to fix the stereo; the car is great.

Strength:

Just about the perfect luxury/sport sedan. Everything else, including Jaguar and MB emulate it. Large, but powerful. Fast, but quick to stop and stable. Incredibly well constructed. Safe.

Weakness:

Premium sound system sort of tinny sounding at high volume. Had to take it to the shop for onboard computer failure and catalytic converter replacement (both under warranty).

A couple of days ago I was filling the tank up at the local station. A man next to me with a Cadillac STS jokingly asked if I wanted to trade cars. Then he went on to say how the 740il is one of the best cars made. Similar things have happened to me at least eight or nine times in the last 3 years. When I bought it, I looked at the Lexus, MB and Jaguar comparables. The bottom line is the BMW 740il is what they want to be. The car is simply a pleasure to drive and own. If you want to own the luxury/sport sedan that is the top of its class, the 740il is for you.
