Strength:

Bose sound system. That speaks more for the Bose company than for Cadillac though

Weakness:

everything other than the sound system, to include the dealership Too bad there is no lower numbers for the value rating and/or overall rating.

WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS??!! This car is CRAP!! My wife fell in love with this thing at the dealership, mainly because of the looks and all the "gadgets" that it had on it. Little did we know that those "gadgets" would crap out one by one over the first 6 months or so. The tires had to be replaced with 25,000 miles on them. The tire dealer said all Cateras do that. The tires are the "high performance" tires (I suppose that means they handle GREAT behind a tow truck) that are more expensive than your standard tire. The rear defroster would not shut off and actually drained the battery a couple times (more time behind a tow truck as we didn''t know what could be wrong with it) In reading these reviews that is a fairly standard problem, so why it took several trips to the Cadillac Dealer (MOORES Cadillac)is beyond me. One rainy morning we found 3 inches of water in the floorboard of the vehicle. Moores said that the warranty does not cover this (big surprise as the dealership says that none of the problems are covered by the warranty) but they would dry out the car at the cost of $50.00 per hour. For those with similar problems, there is a rubber gasket below the windshield on the passenger side. Crawl under the car and reach up to the gasket and if you are lucky the water will drain out (all over the person under the car I might add) This should be done at least once a year if not more as leaves and debris get stuck in there sending the water into the passenger compartment. The response from Moores cadillac is the main reason I will NEVER purchase a cadillac again. They say the warranty covers nothing, then after complaining to Cadi GM Headquarters, they say that Moores should have covered it and have to go thru red tape getting a refund. All Moores seems to care about is getting your money. Sometimes the door locks work and sometimes they don''t. Also the air bag light comes on and stays on. Three trips to the dealership before that could be fixxed. I spoke with a mechanic at the cadi dealership during his smoke break who said that he "cringes" everytime a Catera rolls into the garage. His advise was to get an extended warranty and deep pockets, or sell the car. Those words alone speak volumes for both Moores Cadillac dealership, and Cadillacs in general. Anyone up for a class action lawsuit??

Strength:

Nice interior and fairly comfortable. Very good road feel when the car is not out of control. A great highway crusier on flat roads.

Weakness:

Not enough interior space or storage. Not a good handling car in the winter snow unless you put on Arctic Alpen tires.

Lots of concerns with this car. First when you go over roads that have been worn down by trucks it is an outright adventure to see if you can move to the next lane. As I cross over these ruts (they are paved and no potholes) I almost loose control of the car. Now it does pull in the same situation at 35 mph, but as I say it becomes a true adventure at 65 to 70 mph. I now have the feeling that this car is dangerous. I have had it in to the dealer a few times and the loaner cars on the same roads that cause the Catera a problem do not happen with the loaner. Lastly the car will downshift (yes it is an automatic). What happens is at certain speeds going down hill and if you are coasting the car will drop out of 4th gear back to 3rd gear and you can see the revs jump. Getting it back into 4th gear requires stompping on the gas. It is a very intermittent problem, but I do seem to have it happen at least twice a week. I cannot let my wife drive this car as I feel it is dangerous and she does not have the experience handling cars. It is now in for a checkup on these problems and if they cannot fix it I will dump the car.

Strength:

I like looks, rims(chrome 16"), Leather int., htd seats front and back, bose stereo exc., large trunk for size of car, handling is good, ride exc., Road noise very min compared to others makes tested, gas mileage 30mpg hwy at 70mph.

Weakness:

Glove box virtually useless, Cupholder cheap, and no real comfortable way to rest left arm when driving. Cost of rebuilding Saab engine as quoted by GM dealer 15,000cdn.

Purchased car in Nov./01 with 45,000k, is now Apr. 17/02 and has 52,000k. Had cupholder replaced. Car has small vib. at 40km/hr but has not been fully addressed yet. Drivers door would not close/catch twice, pssenger door once. In cold weather glove box squeaks until warm. Tires new right before purchase. Car drives straight, handles great, and have had no other problems. Brake pads seem to be wearing out prematurely(probably due to weight of car). I have read thru all 94 reviews and seems that ''98 is better than ''97 and ''99 models. Due to all reviews and my need for a truck to pull boat will most likely trade off this spring.

This car is a pices of crap! I will never own another Cadillac. There are electrical problems they can''t find or fix.The tires are very dangerous. They wear terribly. I have 23,000 miles on my car and I DON"T drive aggressively!! And I need 4 new tires! Cadillac knows about the problems but they will not help in any way. Terrible car and never purchase the Goodyear Eagle RSA tires!

Strength:

Toys and luxury.

Weakness:

More HP

From what I have read, most of the problematic cars were not bought or serviced by Caddy. Our Catera, and other vehicles are sold and serviced by Caddy and have been great. We had 1 tire problem, but Cad replaced it. I think this car is a lot of bang for the buck. The other imported luxo bombs are just as expensive (usaully more) to maintain.

Strength:

Good Looks

Weakness:

It is a piece of junk and I will never own a Cadillac product again.

My son purchased this vehicle as his first car purchase. While in basic training it was driven once a week to ensure that it remained in working order. It had 48000 miles on it. He came home from basic and picked up the car. 2 months later he was replacing quote unquote new tires, due to continual pulling to the right. Then at 51000 miles car began to overheat, with nothing being found by mechanics as reason. Put on computer with no faults found. Two weeks later, car overheated and dumped oil in the water system. Radiator leak lead to $581.00 radiator replacement, informed that system flushed and weekly replacements of water, would clear water of oil residual. Prior to 5th flush, car overheated again, this time computer check revealed and testing of water that exhaust was present in the water. Heads removed only to reveal that leak was occuring from a stuck valve in the oil cooler allowing oil to seep into water system, so $2600.00 later, new oil cooler and heads and gaskets having to milled unnessarily, the car was running again. I then assumed the payments for my son as a bi-weekly pay check of $485 for an E-1 in the Army definitely could not afford the upkeep of such a vehicle. MY MISTAKE!!! Two weeks later my wife was going to work and the timing belt broke, messing up 12 out of 24 valves, thus another $3200.00 repair. Was told by the mechanic that cadillac has been having problems with the tensioners. We had the car home for a total of 1.5 weeks, we were driving along at 60mph and it blew a rod and dumped the oil. Now I have a car that I am making payments on sitting in my driveway that no dealer wants to trade me for (dealers state that there are so many problems with the 97 catera that no one wants to deal with trying to get rid of them), so either I replace the engine or sell the thing for parts.

Fear that any thing could go wrong

Makes me sick!! I am only now realizing what I have done. I thought i got a steal with the car only having 28,000 miles on it when I bought it and now with only 34,000 i have already had it to the shop twice for the door locks locking and unlocking at will, and I have smelled burining oil and found no leaks. The check engine light flickers on and off putting more fear into me. One day sitting ata light the whole car started vibrating out of control for about two to three minutes until I accelerated to about 20 mph then stopped and hasn''t done it since. After reading these other review my thoughts are to trade it off and take a loss. Anyone looking for a catera cheap?

Strength:

That I only have 5 months left on my lease.

Weakness:

Excessive Tire Wear, Sun Roof Operation, Computer Problems, No support from the dealerships that sell these defective automobiles.

This is the worst car I have ever owned. The dealership replaced the first set of tires at 18,000 miles (all belts showing)at their cost. The back tires had to be replaced (belts showing) by me at approximately 30,000 ,miles and then the front tires were replaced by me at 37,000 miles (the dealership can''t seem to remember the reason (defective design) they replaced the first full set of tires). The check engine lights continiously come on for one reason or another. The sunroof works 10% of the time. It has been stuck open so many times we are scared to use it ( we keep a screwdriver in the car to wind it shut when we do use it). It has been stuck in park and stranded us. I was told the last time (this week) when I had to replace the last two expensive tires, when I asked if all Cadillac''s were designed this poorly, the service manager told me that I did not have a Cadillac I had an Opal. It was a different car that Cadillac put its name on. I explained that the salesman neglected to tell me that piece of information when I leased it for $38,000. I never had that explanation with the Mercedes or BMW I leased before, but then again they were a true luxury car that did not stay at the service department. I seriously have had this car back to the garage more that all the other cars I have owned combined. I have complained to the dealership, Cadillac Customer Service Hot Line with no positive response just a run around. At least the dealership will admit that they have a lot of problems with this model car. As I can tell from reading this sites reviews this car should be recalled and never released again. Listen to the experienced, STAY AWAY FROM THIS CAR!

Weakness:

I''m not pleased overall with this car.

Ran fine for 20K miles, then alignment went to pot. Took it to a dealer who purportedly aligned it to specs. Drove it about 1,500 miles immediately thereafter on a road trip and noticed excessive wear on the left front tire. Took it to an independent shop at destination who said it was out of alignment. Returned home and replaced all tires (excessive wear in addition to alignment damage on 3) at a Firestone shop. Guess what? Out of alignment again. No other problems thus far but thank goodness this is a lease that I can dump in 11 more months. I tried to get satisfaction from Cadillac but they basically just said the dealer is God and the car is perfect. I strongly recommend that no one consider acquiring this piece of GM junk. Bought my wife a Hyundai XG300L this summer. It has more toys than the Caddy, runs quieter on the road, handles better, and was $10K cheaper on the sticker. Just another indication that more money may buy more junk rather than quality.
