Model Reviewed: Jaguar X Type

Strength:

Acceleration....even gas mileage is better than I had read in earlier reviews. The interior is just fine. Very comfortable seating. The trunk is quite large. Fit and finish are excellent. Radio with single CD player works very well. ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!!!!!!! Superb! A blast to drive on the interstate! Very sprited ride.

Weakness:

I've not found any - road noise perhaps, but when I get in our other two cars, the noise is far more pronounced - so compared to what I'm used to, it is very quiet.

I have been interested in the X Type ever since I laid my eyes on it a couple of years ago. After poring over all of the written information and internet reveiws, I was a bit nervous about considering this car. After much research, I felt that Jaguar had corrected many of the problems from previous years even down to the much-requested 2 cupholders. I bought my 2004 X Type, and there only one problem with it....it's much too fun to drive! For those of you who have read a number of negative reviews, I suggest you carefully look at the car yourself. You really can't tell much in a test drive. It is so much different "out in the wild." This is without a doubt the best car we have owned. If you get one, you'll need to get used to people staring at you. You won't have to worry that you'll be snickered at because "it's not a real Jag." It is. And, you will notice that you're pretty much alone out there in a Jaguar unlike all of the Audi, BMW and Lexus owners who see their cars on every corner. We have taken several long distance trips in Florida and maybe saw one or two Jags all day on each trip. In my opinion, the only thing Ford and Jaguar have in common is that both manufacturers' names have the letter R in them. After having driven Fords for 20 years, I think I am qualified enough to tell you that this ain't no Ford - not even close.

arm rest needs to be redesigned...drives passengers crazy

Was looking for a different car. A million BMW's and Mercedes make it boring. Found X-Type 3.0 and love it. Have had it about a year and let me say it will turn heads. Black exterior/interior with real wood is smooth. Had a recall on transmission for some reason, gave me another Jag X-Type to drive while they had mine. Did not feel the same. Technician said the computer actually learns your driving pattern and adjust accordingly. Love this car.

Model Reviewed: Jaguar 2.5 Manual

Strength:

Exterior and interior styling, handling, all wheel drive, trunk space, overall fun to drive factor

Weakness:

"Dead" clutch feel, lack of low end torque

After 22 months and 36,000 miles, I think I know my Jag pretty well. It's not a perfect car, but has a unique combination of features that no other car can match at the price. The styling has grown on me. The paint is perfect and the interior is clearly best in class. No other car at the price offers such unique style and standard wood dash and leather seats. In the 325i or the A-4, leather and wood costs about $3000 extra. The chassis is probably the best feature of the car. It handles great in the dry, and even better as the conditions get worse. In the rain, it will run circles around a BMW. I plan on replacing the tires and shocks with higher performance items as they wear out, and then the handling should be perfect. The manual transmission is actually pretty good, and once the shifter breaks in, it shifts well. The clutch, however, is very dead feeling, and it takes concentration to shift it fast and smoothly. Jaguar needs to fix this. The engine is very good in my opinion, but maybe not as refined at the BMW. Due to the all wheel drive and the weight of the car, it's not quite as fast as a 325i, but the difference is minimal, especially above 60 MPH. It doesn't have abundant torque, meaning that you need to have it in the right gear if you are in a hurry. Overall, I'm happy with my choice. It stands out in the sea of BMWs and Lexis' in my neighborhood, and is great fun to drive. I get 22-23 MPG in overall driving, and have had zero trouble with the car. I think that some of the lukewarm (or worse) reviews of the car are because people either compare it to a $70,000 Jag, or load it up with $15,000 worth of options and then complain about the price. I wouldn't pay $45,000 for a Jag X-type, but for $31,000 it's the best value out there.

Strength:

Weakness:

Could use small V8. Back seat is tight for long legs.

At 5,000 miles the transmission had to be replaced. This is not a recall but very common in late 02 early 03 models. I would like to see a little more power. I couldn't justify $4,000 for 3.0 with a 1 second less 0to60. Everything else is perfect. Good mileage 27+. A real head turner in Topaz and Sand. Dealer couldn't be any better, service completed when promised and a waiting room that rivals some hotel lobbies, or just take the loaner car. Will be looking to keep this as second car and buying a S-type V8.

a few more horses would be nice, another cup holder

I've had my new x-type for about a month now and so far it has been everything i've expectced. The style captures the attention of many with its graceful and classic jaguar lines. Interior is top-notch as leather and real wood surrounds you. Much more elegant than its competition in this category. Fit and finish is excellent. The wood steering wheel is a must get option. Ergonomics are well thought out. Acclearation so far meets expectations. The automatic transmission is smooth and the cabin is very quiet. Suspension handles bumps well and corners like its on rails with the AWD. Braking is solid. So far I've been impressed with the Jaguar experience.

Strength:

Xenon lights, All Wheel Drive, nice looking design, reasonable price tag, good on gas while giving good performance, great stereo, cd quality. First sunroof I have ever had that did not make noise or leak. A/c is great, climate control works nice. The 5-spd shifter knob is sporty yet classy. Ohh, the push button key is too cool, everyone wants to play with it.

Weakness:

The arm rest on the center console is a poor design, everytime the passenger moves the arm rest moves with them. However, if you insert a small screw in the inside of the arm rest it will stay stationary and not move. Since the screw is placed inside of the arm rest it is completely hidden. This modification worked great for me and my wife no longer gets annoyed everytime she hits the arm rest. One more cupholder would also be handy.

I waited at least 6 months to drive this vehicle before submitting a review. So far, I love this vehicle and could not be more happy with it.. My wife is having twins so a four door vehicle with AWD is necessary since I am not an SUV fan. The All Wheel Drive is great, I looked at BMW's, Mercedes, etc, they are all nice cars but are a pain in the winter with rear wheel drive. The AWD is a real bonus and handles great. This vehicle gets excellent gas mileage, 28-32 mpg. I drove the 3.0 and the 2.5 and to be honest, there was not much power difference to justify spending an extra $4,000 to $5000 more. The 2.5 has a reasonable acceleration from 0-60 but the real fun takes place on the highway. I have personally driven this car at over 140 mph,(that's stock, no aftermarket products) the car is smooth and handles great at these speeds. The xenon lights are a must have. A really fun car to drive at night. This is the first time I have ever driven behind Xenon's and I will always pay the extra money to have the option of Xenon's in the future. The visibility in this car is perfect. Everything can be seen from the side and rear view mirrors with ease. The five speed is fun to drive, the gear ratios have such a wide range that you don't have to shift constantly if you don't want to. The stereo/cd sounds great. The car has lots of leg room, I'm 6' tall and have plenty of leg room. If you are over 6'3 you might want to see if this vehicle works for you. Backseat and trunk space is huge. The ride is smooth, don't even feel a bump in the road. Automatic wipers are great, as soon as a raindrop falls the wipers come on and stay off when the rain stops. Seats are comfortable, the wife loves them too. I have had zero problems with this car. Jag pays for all of my oil changes every 10,000 miles until 50,000 miles. The car gets alot of looks and I like the fact that there aren't a million of them on the road. I did read a bad review of the X-type but I believe the only reason the poor review was given was because some people who give reviews want Jag's to be over $50-60k, they don't like the fact that Jag produced a great car for under $40K and an average person can actually own one. These people think a great car must cost over $70k in order to be a great car. I'm 32 years old, moving up in the world , I'm making good money but I have college loans, kids on the way, house payments etc. Maybe in five years I'll buy a $65-$80k car but for now I want my cake and eat it too, if Jag can provide a car like this for people like me than more power to them. With this car I have my cake and eat it too. I would buy this car again, I am very happy with it..

(prices in sterling) I was fortunate enough to find pre registered model, brand new but saved 5000 on list price so i was happy before i even got in it!, great looks. sport suspension is far better than standard its got more grip than i know what to do with! having driven with standard wich i find much too soft. there are only 100 indianapolis models i am told, different alloys, grille, xenon lamps, steering wheel, leather/suede sport seats and black wood dash, (totally black car) otherwise a lot like the sport model. my first auto transmission and living in london i love it. great in town, better on motorways (did 150 miles yesterday) lots of pick up at almost all speeds. only 1035 miles to date, allready in love.

Trunk is huge, AWD is great, interior is beautiful, sound system much better than most standard ones. It's a Jag.

Weakness:

No memory seat (even w/Premium package), radio signal weak, dome light dims out as soon as driver door is locked (my Mustang even stayed on longer), gas mileage could be better.

Very happy w/Baby Jag so far. The interior is more luxurious than BMW 3 series. 2.5 liter w/manual is fun to drive. All wheel drive is awesome in rain. If you're looking for a car of which there aren't a million others on the road, this is the one. Everyone thinks car is much more expensive than sticker price.

First update since last review. 2800 miles...So far this car has performed perfectly. I really love this car. It rides beautifully, and the interior is rattle free and extremely quiet.Gas mileage is around 24 mpg with a combination of city and hiway driving. Should do better on a long trip though. The leather seats are very comfortable, sound system is ok and the heated seats are a plus. Even with the smaller v6 it stills has plenty of power. Did I mention the all wheel drive is fantastic in the snow. Here in the northeast with record setting snowfalls, I purchased this car just in time. Also I would highly recomend the dealer... Reedman Auto in Langhorne, Pa. I will post again after I have racked up more mileage.
