Strength:

Very smooth ride, power when pushed, comfortable seating, nice sound system.

Weakness:

Unimpressively designed interior, expensive to maintain, and a generally boring experience.

You don't expect, within a month of purchasing a certified, used Lexus from a flagship dealer, to have to fork out an additional 10% of the purchase cost on fundamental items like a timing belt and brake work. Well, I sure didn't, anyway. (Surprise, surprise!) Follow that not so many months later with the sudden death of the seat warmers (in the middle of the winter, of course) and shortly thereafter with an annoying right front strut noise that I had to wind up diagnosing (after two dealers failed in their own efforts) and you get to kiss another $500+ goodbye! Interior design is so unimaginative as to be downright criminal in a high-end vehicle. Can someone explain, for example, why they would put so much effort into the hideaway design of the front cup holders only to restrict their diameters and overhead space (due to an over-padded centre armrest) so much that only the smallest and narrowest of cups will fit? And what about cellphone use? Considering the target demographic for this vehicle, one would think the centre console would be friendly to cell phone use (yes, we're talking hands-free). Instead, the driver is forced to either commandeer the front ashtray, try and manoeuver around the big transmission knob, keep the cell in his lap, or let it slide wildly about on a convex, slippery, polished centre console. Engine power? Yeah, so there''s a V8 - and a thirsty beast it is. Just don't expect it to be there in the corners because the car isn't up to compensating. Trunk space? Well, it's okay - and just okay, when you take into account we're looking at a limo-level vehicle. What about those wiper arms? Whose idea was it to leave so little room for them under the front hood overhang? What a great way to wear the paint off the lip! And, speaking of paint and finish? They don't stand up as well to the test of time as one would expect. Chips and scratches down to the metal come easily to this urban-driven car and the would-be sleek black gloss is dulled by thousands of tiny surface scratches that probably embedded themselves just as readily over the years. More so than other cars in my last 15 years of experience. An overrated vehicle by a wide margin, IMHO, undeserving of the rep it has garnered.

Strength:

-smooth ride -build quality, heavy, elegant look -

Weakness:

-eats up gas quickly -high repair costs -brakes are pretty pathetic

This is my first car. I bought this car 2 months ago at 86k miles. Before I got this car, I had a machanic checked it, and the power steering pump required some minor repair, which cost me about $200. Otherwise the car was in pristine condition. After I bouht the car I replaced all 4 tires and because the brake was noisy, I brought it to the local Lexus dealer (Lexus of Tucson) and it cost me $450 to have the problem fixed. Noise is gone, but brakes aren't great, even a Chevy Malibu brakes better than the LS 400. Great highway car. Gas milage is good for the car of this size, consumes about as much fuel as a V6 03 Honda Accord. Traction control sometimes went off, then after a while, come back, particularly after a bit of highway driving. Very comfortable car, the Nakamichi sound system is great! I am hoping to put another 100k miles on it.

Model Reviewed: LS400

Strength:

- Very smooth and bulletproof engine. - Tight build quality. - High $$$ features for a decent price used. - Quiet and safe ride. - Beautiful style and low drag co-efficient. - Decent gas mileage for a large car. - Used models usually highly optioned, watch out for air suspension option repair costs though. - Get a good car and you're set, get a bad one and your screwed!

Weakness:

- Obscene repair costs. Do not buy unless you can handle the repairs yourself or the costs. - No road feedback from steering, also a bit of "dead" feel as it attempts to correct. - Air suspension option repair costs are $800-1000 per side. As a reference, a good aftermarket strut usually can be had for less than $250 per side installed. - Climate control LCD's fail over time. Lexus repair costs - $800. - Lighted instrument panel needles can fail, again, expensive to repair. - Dual to single to dual exhausts. - No MAF on 94-prior.

I just bought my 1993 LS40 after deciding to retire my 1990 Integra with 225,000 miles. I am a car enthusist but haven't kept up with Lexus' due to the price. I maintain all of my cars, both mechanical and body. Once I began researching this vehicle I was impressed with the engine and overall build quality, plus the style. I purchased mine with 115,000 miles on it and expect to get a good 100,000 more out of it. It has a complete Lexus maintance history on it (glad I didn't have to pay for all of that scheduled maintance!). One thing is certain, this is not a cheap car to maintain. I plan on using salvage yards and forums to keep any repair costs down, if you have to go to the dealer for repairs you better have very deep pockets. For example, $800 for 2 rear rotors, brake pads and labor. This is per the dealer that performed this on my car before I took delivery and no I did not have to pay for it, they found it during th inspection. I have heard figures of $800-1000 for each corner to replace the strut on the air suspension models, and there are 4 sides. They shouldn't all fail at once though. Don't jump into this car (or any Lexus if you are not aware of this). Anyway, now the reasons I bought the car. The build quality is tight and it is a heavy, well made car, with a 3 year old son onboard this is very important to me. The engine is a work of art and has great potential. Even with the high mileage and older tires, this car tracks true, is very smooth, tight and very quiet at 80mph on the highway. It is roomy and has all of the features of a 50K car that I am not going to pay 50K for, less than 20% on the dollar seems fair to me. I will say I am drawn to the Lexus name and status also. Also, these are sleek and beautiful cars, although I am looking to upgrade to polished 98-up style 5 spoke wheels, no chrome for me. I specifically target the 93-94 model for my purchase due to the style, used parts availability and costs, even though I could have gone 1995 up. 93 got bigger brakes (and 16" wheels for them) along with several other improvements. You see them referred to as Series II models in some places. Go to tirerack.com and print off a profile of a 94-prior and of the 95-up, the 94 and before just looks better. Of course if a newer one falls in my lap I won't complain. While I love US muscle cars, I prefer Japanese cars over German ones due to the reliability. That said, this model LS400 does not have any feedback from the road via the steering. They're are some mods discussed on Aussie sites to correct this to some degree, I will be attempting this soon. My only regret is that my car did not have the Nakamichi stereo option. I hope to take care of that soon.

Strength:

The car had a good quality feel to it like a Mercedes. Nice ride and fairly quiet. When you maintain it (which means paying $$$$ for scheduled maintenance) is fairly reliable. So when you factor the costs in to the equation, a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry would do the trick and you can keep the extra $$$$$ for those roadtrips.

Weakness:

Parts and dealer service are expensive. No, not as expensive as MB or BMW, but almost. I'm glad I didn't have the a/c go out like my friend's. Florida is mandatory a/c for cars!!!

We had this car as an upgrade from a 92 Acura Legend. I am quite surprised at what everyone is saying about the car. Yes, it was a nice car, but it's just as expensive to maintain as any other highline make. Yes, Lexus service depts. are better than their German counterparts, but that's the whole point. If you follow maintenance schedules on any make, you tend to avoid major problems. Our car had to have the power steering rack replaced at 65k. If we didn't purchase the extended warranty, that would have been a $1500. mistake! Also, the brakes did suck for a premium make. Not cheap either. A great car would be one that didn't have the climate control display go out. Yet you all are still giving it a 5 star rating on this site???

Strength:

Excellent accelaration, great interior comfort, great electronics (park assist is a great feature)

Weakness:

None

As a buyer who spent a lot of time comparing the LS430 with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi, my conclusion is that the LS 430 beats them all, hands down. It is a great package of features, fun to drive, and wonderful in styling. I also think the criticism that it is boring is completely unfounded. It has excellent accelaration, corners very well for a car of this size and weight, and has the right road feel for a luxury car. Some influential reviewer opinions about soft handling seem to have taken hold, and are incorrect. I would urge all serious buyers to test drive the car and make their own judgements. This is a car that dominates its competitors on features, performance and styling, and will for a long time.

Strength:

Smooth and potent engine Uncomparable fit and finish Likely the most reliable car in its class Outstanding Lexus service dept.

Weakness:

Doesn't downshift that great at low speeds Not as sharp looking as similar BMW or Mercedes models

This is a thoroughly well made car that is a pleasure to operate. Every detail seems to be quality, and there are plenty of neat places to stash stuff. If you want a Cadillac ride without driving a boat, this is your car. The handling is surprisingly good for a vehicle of this type. For value the German cars can't even compare. Haven't had even one problem with this car the one year plus since I bought it used. It's the ideal car to give you a smooth, less stressful trip through major city traffic.

Ergonomics, smooth ride, power, quality.

Sort of bland, in a way.

A perfect car. Amazing ride, power, and quality. We bought used for my wife, as the C320 was just way too small for a kid the car seat in the back. Got a Certified 1999 with 49k miles from the local dealer. The car looks brand spanking new. You cannot tell it has more than 100 miles on it. We drove it to Carmel right away, and it got 24 mph highway, about 16 in town. The highway figure includes some passing and mountain climbs, too, though. I was amazed at the power and the smoothness of the ride. This car is darn near perfect. Inside, it looks like a top-of-the-line Toyota -- duh. Nothing flashy or remarkable about the looks. The transmission is absolutely invisable. It's the closet thing to continuously variable I've ever experienced. Shifts are undetectable.
