Model Reviewed: SAAB 900 SE Turbo Convertible

Strength:

Styling, body integrity, not too many on the road. Very good highway cruiser. Car comes loaded with about every option that was available in 1997. Great used deals for someone who wants a convertible. Handling and performance with manual is good. Good all-weather convertible; great insulation in the winter and snow.

Weakness:

Turbo lag. This is not in the same league as a Mercedes or BMW, or an Infiniti for that matter. This is not really a sports car. Performance is not stellar. Get a great lease deal new or wait until it's 2-5 years old and depreciates 50-80% of its new car price.

Great Used Car Value if you can find one that's been well taken car of. Mine had only 54K miles and checked out well with a mechanic. It did have a fairly small dent on the lower front driver's side which I had fixed for about a grand and now you wouldn't know it was ever dented. SAABs have massive depreciation. This car does not feel like a $42,000 convertible--it's new car sticker price. However, cars have vastly improved since 1997 and there has since been a huge race to increase hoursepower by most car manufacturers; hence its huge depreciation. Car handles well and feels solid but has large turbo lag. It's a slug off the line. The turbo doesn't kick in until 3rd gear and about 3000 rpms, but then it feels like a V6. Also has torque steer. Very comfortable leather seats, nice 160 Watt stereo with 6 CD Changer in trunk, seat warmers, auto top. Get the manual if you want performance. The auto transmission is really poor and cheap feeling. This is a great used car, but I can't imaging anyone buying a SAAB new. They're almost as expensive as BMWs and really aren't in the same league performance-wise. However, SAAB seems to offer very cheap lease deals to attract buyers away from BMW, AUDI and Mercedes. I give the value rating 5 stars for its used car value on this excellant deal. SAAB sell way below the Kelly Blue Book price, so don't let a dealer try to screw you. Dealers can pick them up for a only few grand at auctions and they have a dismal trade-in value.

I was looking to buy a sports car, I looked at the BMW 328i convertible the Audi A-4 Convertible and the SAAB 9-3 convertible. Well all I can say is SAAB proved that the can be truth in advertising, They say "People who test drive a SAAB usually buy a SAAB." Let me tell you its a ROCKET! don't get me wrong BMW and AUDI make very nice cars and they look very nie when I'm looking at then in MY REAR VIEW MIRROR!!!!

Weakness:

It's an old car, and I look uncool in it.

Where do I begin, I love this car so much. It is extremely reliable, and never in the shop. My car has 178,000 miles on it and it has 178,000 miles to go. There are no dents or dings on it, but it is old, which is the only reason why i would get a new vehicle. i want something hip and happenin'.

Model Reviewed: SAAB 93 VIGGEN

Strength:

This is a great looking car! Great suspention, sound system, the most comfortable seats I ever sat in,and, of course, the power and looks. This car is rare and it makes it even more attractive. The metallic blue color is the most beautiful and the wheel trims are great.

Weakness:

The cup holder is right in front of display panel and when it's used it's impossible to change the CD let alone to see what's displayed. Very low front makes it difficult to drive in the snow or over driveways with bumps. I wish the seat heaters had high and low option as it gets too hot too quickly. The clutch is hard too press on so the foot gets tired but I suppose it has to do something with the powerfull engine. The steering is also kind of stiff but it's not a big deal for me.

I've purchased this Saab 93 Viggen at Three Rivers BMW. I was dreaming about this car for a long time and one time could not resist anymore and sold my old Toyota Paseo. Finally it happened-they delivered it right to my door. However, the excitement was ruined on the second day when the message "Fill up coolant" appeared on my display. It turned out that the head gasket valve needed to be replaced. It cost me $920.00. Never did I think that they could sell me a car with such a big defect. I finally got it fixed up and inspite of that I am reveling this car. I don't mind routine maintenance but repairs like that on the car that is only four years old empty my pockets pretty quickly.

Strength:

Puffy leather interior and creature comforts beyone its 1987 times, stiff sport suspension, precision handling, acceleration was better than it should have been. Was excellent (better than my father's Ford Explorer) in the snow when I lived in the northeast and was amazing on the highways of CA when I moved here.

Weakness:

Shifter was awkwardly tall and transmission was not smooth, parts are expensive and often require a lot of labor for installation, reliability after about 150K is nonexistant - I was in the garage every other week at least (but that's A LOT of miles for any car), no cup holders, starting system (starter/battery/fuel injection, etc.) was a problem well before the high miles as was maintaining a steady RPM at idle

A wonderful car overall. For a normal lifespan it was reliable, resiliant and fun. I just sold it last year, because it was starting to fall apart finally (at over 200K). I got more than my money's worth on that car.

Great standard features Turbo is great for passing Trunk space Heater is fantastic

Weakness:

Cabin rattles Chips and scratches easily Suspension does not tolerate bumpy roads well. Cheap plastic appointments not characteristic or Saab style (must be GM's idea)

Car is fun to drive, and offers very good standard options. I love the way it holds to the road. I have 33,000 miles and haven't had any major problems, although rattles in the cabin drive me nuts. The dealer seems to be incapable or unwilling to fix this problem. Make sure to spring for the premium package. It gives you more controls on the passenger side seat and a better stereo. The standard stereo is downright unacceptable. Trunk space is HUGE. It’s almost like having a wagon except it looks cool and drives like a sports car.

Solid and safe Unique appearance Fast

Weakness:

Mother of Jesus - a cup holder that isn't specifically designed to ruin the computer and stereo would be nice. Its bad enough that this thing is placed in a way that once opened it blocks the radio/ stereo/ computer controls - but it's got a high placement, making it infinitely more sensitive to the inertial effects of driving the car. Put a cupholder down low on the dash (that is actually big enough to hold more than a dixie cup) and I'm good to go. I'm splitting hairs over this, but for a car that is so well thought out and designed, they took an extra long lunch on this one. But then again, they design jet fighters. My brother flew F-16s for 10 years, and he didn't have a cup holder for his coffee either. They just gave him speed.

Best car ever......so far. Minor issue with the rear brakes (didn't pass inspection), but its under warranty. I bought the car used from my buddy's father's dealership with the Saab pre-pwned certification that enables the previous warranty to transfer. I bought the car with 50,000 miles / up to 2007. Very soid feel, looks good, and is VERY fast. Definitely put snow tires on this car. The swedes know a thing or two about adverse driving conditions. Snow tires on that car are the best thing next to AWD, which is now available in the newest edition, 9-2 and 9-2x which is a Subaru WRX that actualy looks attractive. I anticipate trading this one in after a few years and a few promotions at work for that car. the SE has a high output turbo that sneaks in under the radar then wallops you with an acceleration curve that definitely gives the car the deserving title of "sleeper".

Weakness:

Cup holders and the central control, I have a little dog and he stands on the buttons so my windows go up and down while I am driving. Can't seem to find a master control for this, also he sticks his head out the hatch and I have to check twice to not shut his head or tail in this.

I absolutely love the car, I always drive a standard and this shifts like butter. The hatch has sooo much room. Its a beautiful khaki green with black trim.

Comfortable. Practical. Not as expensive to own as people think. Safe. Designed by engineers - not salesmen.

Weakness:

Room on back seat should be better. To much understeering. Based on an old Opel Vectra platform. Not as practical as 900 "classic". weesling noise from windscreen during fast driving.

Please notice, price is in DKr. In USD approx. 25000. This is my 5th Saab 900/9-3. (I own a Saab 900 i-8, "Classic", 1990 to). Compared to my farther in law's Ford Mondeo, the 900/9-3 has been surprisingly cheep to own - I don't know what went wrong, as it was expected to be the other way around. The car is "friendly and forgiving" to its driver. Never surprising the driver. It offers fine comfort - especially to the driver. I fit into this car as a foot into a shoe - an experience, that I never had from other cars.
