Strength:

Volvo Warranty and service immediatly take care of any problems I have had. The craftsmanship is superb and the engine solid.

Weakness:

The engine manifod and air exhaust chip needed to be replaced but this was all done for free under warranty.

This car is beautiful. Excellent acceleration and luxury combined with safety make the perfect car. Exterior styling is timeless and clean.

Strength:

Looks, quality (I hope!) Excellent sound system.

Weakness:

Steering boost is too high-- needs more road feel. Impractical car key-sounds trivial but not. No external trunk lock. My BMW was not trouble free by any means.

This on a 2004 S80: beautiful, very nice car. Dealer delivered a perfect car as they should have. Did NOT get: Turbo, AWD or "Dynamic" traction control. Mechanic mentioned that I avoided several potential trouble spots. Quite adequate acceleration, if you want more, drop into third. I will put Blizzaks on it for winter driving, In Minneapolis I do not need AWD.

It has a comfortable ride!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and the high light is the dealer will was the car when I take it in for service :)

Weakness:

Every other month I have to get a new bulb.

When I first purchased the car I loved it. Now I wish I had bought somthing else. If you buy this car I higly recommend getting the extended warranty. I'm so glad I did. Imagine after owning a car for less then 3.5 years and getting slapped with a 4000.00 bill.

Strength:

Safety features, seats, high quality interior appointments, power, stereo, cruising ability (comfort+power+straight line tracking in all weather), comfortable back seats, decent trunk space.

Weakness:

Reliability-supposedly corrected in 2002 and later models but the jury is out. Visibility to rear quarter panels is poor. This is a real safety issue--takes some getting used to. Isn't a BMW or Audi--steering too light, brakes and overall handling very good but don't have superior feel. However, I repeat, it is a great cruiser. Just know what you want/need.

The best of cars/the worst of cars. One of the best cars I have driven--the worst I have owned. Bought as a certified used car with only 28K miles--a luxury car for the price of a new Camry. Bought it for my wife's severe back problems, and it hasn't disappointed in that regard. She can drive it 12 hours with no pain--some other cars only 30 minutes. However it would be gone if my wife would let it go. We love the seats, power (coupled with 27 mpg on the highway), quality appointments and stereo system (which Edmunds rated #2 sounding factory system in the world). Only problem is I now know what my home system should sound like, and need new speakers to keep up. Now for the bad part: computer software was not updated before we bought it. This is a must if you buy a used S80. We had multiple check engine lights, brake failure lights, and several indicators at once. Weeks in the shop, returns to the shop for the same problem. Now that the computer software is updated, we are having structural problems at 55K: a broken engine mount and a broken suspension strut mount, the latter took 4 days to fix. Not to mention the door lock problems (supposedly fixed on later models) and headlight replacements. Oh yes, the CD player broke, necessitating a complete stereo replacement. Service manager very helpful--doing all he can. He assures me the car is sound--wish I could believe him. The extended warranty that comes with certified used cars has kept this whole painful process down to $100 outlay on my part. However, I had to keep my 10 year old Honda for the first year we owned the Volvo as a spare. Do not buy for your only car. The love/hate relationship continues. If Volvo has fixed the reliabilty, this could be a great car, and I could buy another, but I would not buy a '99-01 model, and am watching the '02 and later for the future.

Comfort, ride, stero system and saftey features.

Weakness:

To many trips to the Volvo dealer. We are glad it is still under warranty. This one is gone at end of lease!

Great on looks, room and comfort. However, pampered this machine only to be treated with a bad AC hose and evaporater in the middle summer. But to top it off @ 23,000 miles it is now in the shop for a new transmission. My third Volvo and my last (AC problems with the other two as well a 740GLE and a 960).

Strength:

Excellent performance and handling, although sometimes a little jittery on bumpy roads. Looks great and very comfortable.

Weakness:

1. Reliability. 2. Cost of parts. 3. Service information not available online or at auto parts stores. Volvo made a bad product and they are going to make us pay for their mistakes at their dealerships.

I have never owned a car that I hated and loved so much. Bought at 40k, now at 65k, I have replaced many parts, more in 25k miles than in 205k miles on my 95 Honda Accord, which I still own as a back up for when this one needs service. I can't get service information. Parts are so expensive, I can not believe it, especially if they fail so often. Can't I get a volume discout? This car looks and drives great. From this perspective it is the best car I've owned. From a reliability perspective, it compares to the 1989 Ford Tempo I once owned-awful. I am looking to sell before something major fails, like some of the reviewers have stated at this web site, such as power steering, rack and pinion or the transmission; Yikes! My advice: Don't buy one, buy two, just like the old Jaguars, so you have one to drive while the other is in the shop.

Strength:

ride, safety record, appearance

Weakness:

Unreliable, unreliable, unreliable. Chews through brake pads rotors like there's no tomorrow. Single manufacter for tires makes them very pricey.

This is the most troublesome car that I have ever owned. I bought it based on Volvo's reputation for safety and reliability. I wanted a car that I could own for 10+ years but now I can't wait to get rid of it. I love the handling, ride and the feeling of driving a big, safe, sturdy car but it has been in the shop over 30 times in the past 3 years. I've replaced many parts too numerous to list. Off the top of my head, I've replaced rear axle, front shock towers, tie rods, power steering pump, and more brake pads, rotors, lite bulbs and tires than I care to think about. There's currently a leak in the transfer case that will cost about $2000 to fix but I'm trying to avoid that. To top it off, the depreciation has been so bad, I'm in a negative equity situation and cannot afford to pay the $3000 it would cost to get rid of it. Volvo corporate has been of no assistance, their customer service staff are rude and completely unconcerned. The one and only time a car has ever left me stranded was this Volvo. Frankly, you couldn't give me another Volvo.

Love the car when its not in the shop. Drives smooth and is very comfy. Lots of leg room and great trunk space. At 58,000mi I have had to have more work done than would be expected. I am now in line for a new transmission and throttle at a grand total of $5000. A new transmission at 58K miles is not acceptable. I have only serviced this vehicle with Volvo and baby it.

Weakness:

Always in the shop for costly fixes. Bought the car new 3 years ago and have already changed 4 light bulbs. have 41,000 miles and currently in the shop for a new transmission, Power steering pump and left front strut. BUY THE EXTENDED WARRENTY WHEN THE TIME COMES. DO NOT LET THE WARRANTY RUN OUT OR YOU WILL BE SORRY!!

We've had a lot of problems with this car! If we're not changing light bulbs, it's power steering pump problems or suspension and recently transmision. The car has 41,000 miles and is still under warrenty, THANK GOD. When it's running it's a dream to drive. The car handles well and stops on a dime. It's definately a luxurious car and very comfortable on long road trips. If you purchase this car, make sure you purchase the $2,350.00 extended warrenty so your covered for 100,000 miles, YOU'LL NEED IT!

Weakness:

emissions sensor-within 20,000 miles car died due to "carb. on the computer chip"? Continues to come up with lemon-like problems, despite religious adherance to maintenance schedule--now dead in my driveway (52,000 miles)with "reduced performance" light(sorry I am unable to relate all more technically) We baby this car! Always something and ALWAYS $800 and up. Owned a low end '95 850 that ran like a dream--perhaps all bugs weren't worked out of this model by 2000?? Study carefully unless you have deep pockets and a fondness for road-side assistance!!!

Have been plagued by trouble with this car-bought new, take it in like a baby for maintenance. Be careful when choosing yours-maybe wait until all the bugs have been worked out of this model.
