Strength:

The car is really comfortable to ride in, and I like the fact that the radio controls are on the steering wheel. Also, its roomy and the trunk is big so it has been practical for driving back and forth to college. Also, when it works, the sound system is pretty impressive. It has a fast engine and is at times, fun to drive.

Weakness:

Big Problems: -The BRAKES are horrible. I have had to replace the brake pads 3 or 4 times since I have been driving, and the rotors also had to be completely replaced. -The ALTERNATOR has been replaced twice, but we have had a perpetual problem with the connections between the battery and the alternator. I cannot even count the number of times that the car just wouldn't start for no reason. -The TRANSMISSION went very early, I want to say after 5 years... I think thats pretty early for a transmission. Now the car sometimes shakes violently when switching gears....not sure what that's about... -When you start to go above 60 mph, the wind noise in the car is so loud that you can hardly hear the radio. -The CD player only works when it is 50-60 out and perfectly dry and sunny. The antenna got stuck in the down position years ago. -Often the power windows don't work, the remote entry remote won't open the trunk, weird lights come on in the panel for no reason. -The cupholders both broke off, as did part of the armrest latch. This is minor, but demonstrative of cheap construction. -The COOLANT light comes on for no reason all the time. -The passenger side "temperature controls" don't actually control anything at all. They are merely for decoration, but at least they haven't broken yet... -The green paint comes off in large chips. -This car needs new tires very often, VERY OFTEN. -Also, the car guzzles gas. Somewhat efficient on the highway, but horrible in a city setting. I used to drive only a few miles everyday to highschool and need to fill up ridiculously often. -The most annoying and bothersome problem has been the brakes. The brakes never really work the way they are supposed to, and have been a continual drain on my wallet. --ALSO-- I believe there was a recall on the airbags, which my dad took advantage of, but beware when buying these used that this potentially dangerous problem has been taken care of!!

I am 19, and this is the only car I have ever driven. My dad purchased this car in 1996 (it was one of the dealer promo models so it had a couple thousand miles on it). I have only personally been driving it for 3 years, but I have witnessed it's behavior since he bought it, and I am not impressed. My car has about 160,000 miles on it, which I realize is A LOT, but there are so many things on this car that have broken that I cannot believe Buick is still in business! I hear that for the most part, my problems with this car are not unique, and since I have owned it, I think I have put more money into it than I could EVER expect to see back. I can't really comment on the overall value, because I didn't have to pay my dad for this car... I guess even when it's free this car is sort of a ripoff...

Strength:

This car had soft comfortable leather seats that were heated. This is the ONLY positive we can say about this car!

Weakness:

The interior climate control device went out and was not warranty replaced (Cost: $700). The upper and lower manifold intake gaskets are made of plastic and melt after 60,000 miles. This is something that GM refuses to recall, even though it is a most common recurrent problem on 1999 Regals. Cost:$1000. Chintzy plastic parts on car (Seat belt latches, clothing hooks, handles, etc.) break easily with repeated use. Buick does NOT make engines like they used to!

I would not recommend this car to most people. As soon as the 60,000 mile factory warranty went out on the car, things started to go wrong (Started at 63,000! Upper and lower manifold intake gaskets!). We wanted a luxury touring car that would last a long time. This car is now at a car dealership awaiting auction!

Strength:

Has reasonable torque, runs smooth (still can barely hear idle) and rides fairly smooth, comparatively - would help if shocks replaced. Many features that are standard on the Regal are options on Chrysler and Ford products. I like the timing chain, no programmed replacement as with belt.

Weakness:

The only weakness that I have found is it seems to wear (cups) tires but I think that is a problem related to front wheel drive in general. Even rotating ever 3000-4000 miles doesn't solve the problem.

We bought a lease program 1999 Regal that had 21,000 miles and drove it until 78,000 miles with no problems except the temperature display on the AC went dim. We traded it for a 2000 exactly like it except color and with only 19,000 miles. It now has 147,000 and I have only replaced the fromt brake pads, 1 rotor (my fault) and belts, hoses, filters, tires, etc. Love the car and would buy another one.

Strength:

Great performance, firm but comfortable ride. Ergonomically, a great interior. When purchased, an excellent value for the money.

Weakness:

15 MPG in the city (too much stop-and-go traffic), small fuel tank, very little lumbar or thigh support in seats, no GPS.

As the original owner with 38,500 miles, the car has performed well. Two items that were covered under warranty needing replacing were the EGR valve (at 800 miles) and the RR electric window motor at 25,000 miles. Otherwise, a great car. Change the oil every 3,500 miles. New Yokohama tires at 30,000 miles (could have gotten another 5,000 miles on the Goodyears but they were too noisy). New brakes at 30,000 miles. Last week as a proactive measure I replaced all belts, hoses, checked the supercharge oil and changed the transmission fluid and filter.

Well I suppose there is one thing positive I can say...no one has died in this thing yet. However after a couple of what I would call "fender benders" that wouldn't have even dented my BMW, the vehicle did manage to accumulate almost $2.5K in repairs..my gosh these things crumple like Faberge eggs!!? We are a third generation GM family (both as employees and as car-owners). Our son, after working 2 summers as an intern at General Motors, was left with his butt flapping in the breeze because GM decided to discontinue the summer intern program just prior to his third summer, you know the one where they offer you a job? He now works at SBC and vows to NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER own another GM product!!!!!

Weakness:

This car has 111K miles on it and at this point I have spent almost as much in repairs and it cost us when we got it as a GM Certified vehicle. There is not one system on this car that has NOT had a wrench on it since we bought it. NOT ONE. I am getting to where I can close my eyes at night and take it apart and put it together in my sleep! I can't wait until my son shows up here with Honda or a Acura. Just think of the extra money he will have after 111k miles!

Purchased the car as a lease turn-in for our son in 1999 with 30,000 miles on it. Car was loaded and looked pretty well taken care of. Things went pretty well for about a year or two and the first 40 to 45 thousand miles then the "fun" started. Lets see, where to start? Tires at 40k then again at 80k. Full front and rear brakes at about the same times and just recently an an extra set of fronts (and yes the rears DO have the much talked about design flaw). Then came the alternator (intermitant failure had to go to a dealership to be fixed), front and read struts (rears twice), water pumps (now on second one)/timing chain cover (had to replace because of leaking glycol..guess what the water pump bolt to?). Power steering lines replaced(leaking). A/C evaporator, compressor and clutch. Replaced steering column wiring because shorted and caused no brake lights. Those CRAZY little lites in the rear spoilier are $20 EACH at the dealer, replaced those each at least twice because the pod they are in does not seal out the water (by the way the spoiler is steel and is rusting and looks like crap..drizzling brown water down on the trunk lid all the time). Just got done completely dismantling and epoxying the stupid doors on the console all back together because they are cheaply made and of extremely poor quality...every single door and cup-holder cover had broken at the hinge, replaced windshield (unique to the 1996 model year $288!). Had to have the whole car stripped and painted because the paint keeps flaking off in handfulls a quarter panel at at time. Just replaced DS rear wheel bearing $455 because it shorted out and took the ABS system with it. Muffler went at about 70k and will probably need one this winter. Tilt arm broke off and left the wheel up in the air. Everytime it snows the windshield washer fittings snap off in the ice and are not carried as a stocked part at the dealerships anymore. Power window antennae quit in the "up" position at 50k miles. Huge piece of cladding fell off in the car wash recently (it is ALL held on with double-stick foam tape!!). Had to have the radiatior flushed TWICE because some nit-wit the quickie-lube INSISTS on putting "green" antifreeze in it when in NEEDS the orange DEXCOOL. When mixed the two create a chemical reaction and make tons of black nerdly stuff that clogs the low coolant sensor and gives false LOW COOLANT warning light in the instrument cluster. Emergency flasher button fell off in my hand..broken. All the black has worn off the power window buttons on both side of the front seats..looks like crap. Deluxe floor mats wore out and make a huge ugly hold right in the middle at about 40k miles. Looks like probably a set of CV's in the next few thousand because of some rather troubling "whirring" sounds. Exhaust rattles constantly because most of the exhaust system is held in place with thick black rubber bands that seem to constantly break themselves or break the hanger that supports the other end away from the exhaust pipe. Trunk leaks because the little metal tab that secures the ends of the seals has corroded and allows water in now everytime it rains.

Lots of legroom in the back seat. Very comfortable seats. I like the way it handles.

Weakness:

In the 5 years that we have had this car, we are now on our 3rd set of tires, our 2nd set of brakes. Our rear (power) windows work when they want. We had to replace the transmission at 60,xxx. I called the GM "customer care" line. They gave me a certificate for $800 towards the purchase of a new Buick--yeah, right! When I mentioned the fact that I wouldn't get squat for my trade in, she said that wasn't her problem. I was also told by the GM customer care person that 60,xxx miles was NOT premature for needing a transmission overhaul. We also had to replace the water pump. In one month, we spent over $2000 on this car. Just this week, our rear speaker blew. I was disgusted to hear that these problems are not isolated. I wish I had known about this website 5 years ago!

My husband & I purchased what we thought was our dream car. The first 2 years we had no problems. Since then, we have had nothing but.

Unfortunately last month transmission started to slip (59,000 miles)and found metal shavings in the fluid and now I am told that this model is notorious for having faulty torque converters and I will have to replace the transmission. I see that I am not the only one that is having this problem and wonder why Buick does not protect its reputation and repair them! True to their advertising my father would have no other car but after this experience I know I won't ever purchase another Buick. Seems a shame that we are forced to look at foreign cars that give much better warranties.

Car was a demo still under warranty.

Dramatic Style, smooth ride, luxurious interior.

Weakness:

Expensive to Repair, faulty transmission and computer system - No support from Buick.

I own a 2000 Buick Regal and I have thoroughly enjoyed its performance since the day I purchased it. Unfortunately, since the expiration of the warranty I have had several problems with the most recent one being the most extreme. My vehicle has 59,000 miles and I am the only owner of this vehicle. I have had a noticeable slipping of the transmission so I contacted the dealer. I was informed that my transmission would need to be replaced. I have spoken with representatives from GM, Buick, Muncie and now with the Regional Manager for GM and all have stated that however unfortunate, they are unable to help me. I have always stated that I would again buy a Buick Regal, that I have loved the performance, style and dignity of this vehicle; however, the repair bills have become such that I cannot afford to keep this vehicle nor purchase another Buick. My vehicle was obviously poorly constructed with substandard parts and I am very disappointed to find out that Buick is not the “cream of the crop” that I have always thought nor do they stand by their products. I would not recommend this car for anyone that does not want to put out a lot of money in repairs after warranty expires.

An overhead console for sunglasses and garage-door would be a nice addition.

Best sedan I've ever owned. Put 56K on it with no problems. None. Zero. Only normal maintenance -- oil changes every 3K and tire rotation twice a year. The 3.8 series II is a great engine, smooth and powerful. Loaded with features, this is luxury at an affordable price.
