Worst car in the entire world! I received it for my 16th birthday from the parents. Too bad they didn't check it out before they bought it. Within a few months of owning it the alternator went out. Shelled out money for that. 6 months later car had to have the power steering fixed. Never steered the same again. 6 months after that car again in the middle of traffic. Found out my head gasket had blown spewing metal into the oil pan. Bad news! The cycle of breaking down every 6 months continued until I got sick of it and sold the car back to my parents. Now my brother gets the joy of the car dying for no reason.

Really is a bad car! Does not hold up well and when one thing breaks, seems like the whole thing falls apart. Not reliable!!

Would not recommend this POS to anyone!

good gas mileage, A/C, Stereo system, handling, peppy during summer

Weakness:

tire wear, power, cheap interior, lack of tachometer, just falling apart

This is a really nice car for the money, you get what you expect. But it seems like everything falls apart very quicky and I wouldn't reccomend one of these cars to anyone who wants something reliable. First the glove compartment broke, then the interior light wouldn't shut off, then something with the alternator and the starter came up and it seems like it falls apart!

Weakness:

just read above.

I've had my cav for 3 years, i've replaced, the window motor twice on the passenger side, i need brakes like every six months, i have like 97,000 the car has been crashed or crashed into 4 times, and i can't manage to total it, even though its made of plastic...i hit a snow bank going 2 miles per hour (litterally in a driveway) and I have a $400.00 dent. I slid into a jeep grand cherokee in the rain...$2,500 becuz the cheap POS crumbled, my cupholders block the heat knobs, and my cd player broke and kept ejecting (even if the car was off) resulting in my battery dieing every other day. Then, when i got a new one, my wiring kit cost $100.00 becuz my theft system among various other things are wired into the f'n radio. I also replaced my keyless entry system, and my taillight sockets (both of them) because they kept going out, like a new bulb every week. oh yea, my gas milage is garbage...and the inside is PLASTIC...kinda like the outside....the one original body part has a RUN in the clear coat....oh and don't drop a lit cigarette anywhere in that POS becuz it will burn a really nice hole...you should see my interior, oh, and the clips on my backseat broke, so i can take it completely out if i so choose.

Strength:

Power (for a stock 4 Cylinder).
Gets good mileage.
Handling.
Lots of stuff for them on the aftermarket

Weakness:

Seats are uncomfortable and poorly built.
Like every Chevy from the ninties, it has wiring issues.
If you are not VERY mechanically inclined, take it to a proffessional mechanic.

I Purchased my 97 convertible for $2400 with 60K miles. It has a salvage title from being in a crash and having it's (cosmetic only) damage proffessionally repaired. It only needs an inspection and title to be put back to clear title. This thing has great power for a 4 cylinder engine and it's TONS O' FUN on a twisty road. Anybody who says the interior plastics feel cheap hasn't driven a Ford Focus, they start falling apart on the showroom floor. Go for the LS with some options. It's a real good buy in a used car if you can find one with lower miles and LS trim. Just watch out for Cavaliers with body kits or big wings on the trunk lid. These little cars are pretty popular with the ricer-boy racer crowd and they can be seriously beaten upon.

Affordable all around. Sporty look good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Too small for a family once the kids are no longer infants

I bought my cavalier brand new in 1999. It had 7 miles on it. I LOVED everything about it. The sporty look for a good price, good on gas reasonably priced repairs (nothing too major), affordable maintenance. The breaks did need replaced quite often though. I traded it in yesterday and the only reason I did was I now have 2 young children and a two door is no longer practical. Im sad to see it go. I would definetly buy another one or something similar!! Great little dependable car!!

Strength:

The car looks very sporty and drives nice. It has an awesome stereo system for being 'stock'. And the comfort contols (heat and AC) work very well and are dependable.

Weakness:

I have constant problems with different parts of the car breaking - and not through user error but just bad parts.

Before I bought the Cavalier I owned a new Kia Spectra - I wish I had kept the Kia. I bought the car new, with only eight miles on it. Since July of 2004 I have had the car in the shop three different times. The first time the ABS harness went out and the speedometer went nuts - in third gear it was registering 90 miles per hour. Impossible in the Cavalier. In the same time frame my son slammed the passenger side door and the entire inside panel broke off. They had to order a complete new inside door panel and replace it. The time in the shop was ten days and ended up costing me over $100 in rental car fee. Roughly nine months later the passenger power window motor went out as well as the reverse light switch. Again more time spent in the shop. One week later while driving the car from Phoenix to Seattle the car began 'surging' and the RPM's went from 900 to about 1500 and not idling down. When I called the dealership I discovered that it was a bad chip that needed to be replaced. Today (11/9/06) while driving in rush hour traffic on the I5 freeway in Seattle I pushed in my clutch and it broke. The clutch went to the floor and did not come back up. I sat in rush hour traffic waiting for the State Patrol and the tow truck for 45 minutes. This little breakdown almost got me rear-ended several times and a towing bill of $166.00. My car now sits at the dealership while I am waiting to see if my extended warranty will cover yet another defective part.
I was told that Chevy puts out a very good car - obviously you can't prove it by my experiences.
This experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth as far as Chevy products go.

Very reliable! good gas mileage, convience with fold down back seat, plenty of room for a small car

Weakness:

Can't find another one! The only downside i could find was the body rusting out and the molding around the doors were coming apart but with almost a half million miles what else can you ask for?

I have had three Cavaliers, 1984, 1990, and a 2004. The one i would like to comment on is the 1984, i LOVED this car. Its was a 4speed manual with the old pull out floor vents. I have had many both new and used cars but this one was my favorite. I owned this car for almost 8 years. My friends named it "rust bomber", when i got it, it had 196000 miles on it. When the body gave way it had 478,000miles!!!! no joke, almost a half a million miles on same engine and transmission! only minimal maintence was needed, i.e. tune up every 30,000, oil change every 3,000, brake & tires when needed. At 409,000miles i drove this car from michigan to california and back with no problems at all. The car only failed me 2 times, easy fix 1 battery 2. rust on fuel pump power wire, nothing major. If there was a way i could have another i would do it in a heartbeat. If you are looking for economy and overall reliability this is the car to buy.
