MPG nothing else

Weakness:

Everything, Cheap seats, gas gauge don't work, trunk latch broke, trans leak after 60 miles, brake rotors warped twice now, carpet is comming apart, noisy, no power, etc. etc.

What a piece of junk have a whole 23,000 miles on it and nothing but problems. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CAR!!!!!!! I understand that this is a cheap ride, but any product you buy should not be so poorly made.

What a wonderful car! It saved me from the misery I've had with the Ford Focus.

This car really cruises at high speed while maintaining great handling. The gas milage AND performance is great compaired to the Ford Focus.

This is the best looking small car on the road, only Corvettes look better than the Cavalier. It's a crime to leave this car dirty, I can't stand seeing dirty 2000/2001 Cavaliers. The new to 2001 Dark Blue color is very nice and my suggestion to new buyers is to get the Dark Blue or Silver.

This whole car is a strength :)

Weakness:

Are there any? Well maybe...

The back seat is kinda hard but it's still comfortable for about 3 hours. Then you'll want a rest.

When you fuel up to the max, the needle stays above F for quite a while and then goes down fast. The car has good milage but sometimes it doesn't seem like it because of this :) If you get down to a quarter tank (according to the needle) you better pay attention or you'll run out. I have the 180 degree gas gauge so that also makes the needle seem to go down faster as well.

I couldn't be more happy with my 2001 Cavalier, it takes me everywhere with confidence. Buy a Cavalier instead of a Focus! The Focus is a bad car! The car magazines always praise new car models whether they're good or bad so don't listen to them!

Here's my advice to the street racers out there: Buy this car if you're willing to treat it nicely and drive it the way it's supposed to be driven. Don't expect high performance out of this car, that's not what it's made for. For the teens out there who are rough with their cars and look for performance buy an old $1000-$4000 sports car and beat it up. Only buy a new car if you're going to treat it nice and maintain it. Drive rough and your car is not going to last but if you buy a cheap car then it's not so bad when it does break.

Strength:

At 135,000 miles, here's how it stands...this is my first car. It is a very reliable car. It looks decent (I put a bra on the front to make it look meaner). It runs decent, and it is great for stereo systems! I put a Pioneer 180-watt CD player, 160-watt 3 way Pioneer 6x9 rear speakers, and 2.5-inch Pioneer front speakers in it, and you can feel the floor and steering wheel thump to the bass! The 5-speed manual transmission still works good, and it still has the original clutch (knock-on-wood)!

Weakness:

My trunk lock just broke. I had to put a new shifter cable in it (it cost $80 for a 2 foot long cable), and the radiator went. The wheel cylinders also rusted apart. But for it having that many miles, I can't complain. The defrost was poorly designed...the passenger side vent is bigger than the driver's side, so the passenger can see first. Also takes a while to get heat in the winter, but what 4-cylinder doesn't have that problem?

This is a great first car! It is easy on gas, and very reliable (only broke down once with the shifter cable). It looks good and if you put a quality stereo system in it, it really thumps! Yes, the car is designed with price in mind, but aren't all Cavaliers made to be sold at an afforbable price?

Model Reviewed: 2 Door Coupe 2.2 Liter Engine

Strength:

LOOKS - A clean waxed 2000 Ultra Silver Metallic Cavalier looks better than any other average car on the road. In fact I've kept mine clean all year including the winter by wiping it down with a towel after every ride. My car has been in the manual car wash many times as well. It's that good looking. The interior also looks sharp with sporty looking easy to read gauges including a nice digital odometer.

The Ride - Compaired to other cars I've driven (see below) this is the most comfortable car. It can be a little bumpy on bad roads but it's really no big deal unless you're really picky about those kinds of things. The front seats are very confortable, I went on a 4 hour trip over the summer and I was just fine the whole way (with occasional breaks). My back hurts in other car seats but not in the Cavalier. That's a big plus for me.

The Size - This car is the perfect size for 1 or 2 people, not too small, not too big. Heavy back seat passenger use is not recommended unless you get the four door. I hate driving big cars because I feel like I'm far away from the controls. In this car everything is right there and you get a good view of everything including the road in front of you. The car has nice well positioned arm rests and 5 cup holders (3 in front, 2 in back)! For a small car the trunk is roomy, and the back seat folds down which is a very nice feature. If it's raining and you need something in the trunk just pull back the seat and get it. Of course it's really for storing large things.

Handling - This car has a tight turning radius and the steering is very nice. The ABS also functions well and engages when it should. The brakes are very strong and work well. If you want the car to stop it WILL stop in a hurry, even when the roads are wet. The high quality Goodyear tires that come standard provide good traction.

Stereo - The standard 4 speaker stereo (2 door speakers, 2 behind the back seat) sounds full and will bring all of your favorite songs to life. When you turn up the volume high the bass drops out so you don't blow your speakers. The controls are nice, simple and big. You can easily press all of the buttons with winter gloves on.

Reliability - I've only had the car for about a year but it's been perfect so far except for an emissions sensor that went bad. That was easily replaced under warranty.

Weakness:

No car is perfect, and the same is true with this car as nice as it is.

Interior - The dash does squeak every once in a while, no big deal though especially if you have the stereo going. If your cup holders are full you'll have a hard time getting to the comfort controls. Again, no big deal.

Side impact crash tests - These tests have shown bad results. If you're a cautious driver this is probably something you don't need to worry too much about but you never know.

Doors - The long doors on the coupe model add to the sporty look of the car but they can cause trouble. Most of the time there's only enough room to open it half way. Also the doors are vulnerable to getting frozen shut but I was always able to open them after playing with them for a bit. The locks themselves have always been fine no matter how cold or icy it got.

Consumer Reports - For some reason it seems like Consumer Reports hates the Cavalier, I think it's because the model hasn't been changed in 5 years. They say some things about this car that are simply not true in a recent issue. For this reason I will never believe Consumer Reports again when it comes to cars, and I advise that you ignore what they say about the Cavalier. 2 years ago they recommended the car, now they hate it. Go figure.

These few things are the only weaknesses I can think of. Everything else is fine.

If you're looking for a good small car then you can't go wrong with a new Cavalier. It has everything that a small car can offer. If you're looking for fast acceleration and power you won't get it with the 2.2 engine but the 2.4 is better I'm sure. I heard that the 2.4 is worse on gas though.

Price: Average
Acceleration (2.2 Engine): Average
Gas Milage: Average (10 dollars a week for me with 89 octane)
Stability at high speeds: Above Average
Road Noise/Wind control: Above Average
Looks: Above Average
Room and comfort: Above Average

Standard options (A/C, ABS, etc): Above Average

The dealer I went to is great. If you live in the Chicago area then buy your next car at Sunrise Chevy (http://www.sunrisechevy.com). They have great service and they gave me a good deal on my car. The staff is very friendly.

1987 Nissan Sentra - This was a very reliable car that would never quit. Other than that positive note everything else is worse than the Cavalier. I don't know what the new Sentras are like except that my mom didn't like them when she was looking for a car.

1992 Nissan pick-up truck - Talk about a bumpy ride. Hit a bump at 70 mph and you nearly go airbourne. Also very reliable.

2000 4 door Cavalier - Same thing as the 2 door, not as good looking though. This one has a nice CD player and a handful of other options including a mechanical interior trunk release. Another reliable Cavalier.

good value and nice car for about 6 months when its BRAND NEW. but its all down hill after 6 months....

Weakness:

after Six months, all down hill. Air hose came lose and shook car at 6K miles, Catalatic converter went out at 10K, master module went out at 12K, starter went out 15K, kept cutting out in traffic without warning at 60K..mysterious electronic problem cost me over 500 and still couldn't figure out till I finally took it to dealership who charged me arm and a leg, I could actually see oil leaking from where the head gasket is, It was making a screaming noise...they said it was the belt, I replaced it..the sound got louder.

We think that we are saving money by buying a Caviliar but trust me, you will save a lot more money if you spend one or two thousand more on a Honda Civic. I owned a Caviliar and drive the newer ones at work. They are garbage. I own a Honda Civic now. I owned the Honda for three years now and it has 30K mile on it. I never got one bit of trouble out of the Honda and it drives like the day I bought it. The chevy Cavaliar left me stranded many times and many times when I was with my wife and new born. I would have sued Chevy if I could. I still feel my blood boil thinking about those days I was embarrassed and left stranded in the middle of traffic. If you love your son or daughter..get them a Honda, or you can count on your daughter or young son being stranded somewhere dark and scary with a Cavaliar. I thought I was home free when I finished my payments, but just as I finished my payments (4years), I had no choice but to donate the car for 500bucks as a trade in, and they didn't want to give that much to me.
P.S. The Cavaliars I drive at work break down all the time too. And these are the so called new design or redesigned cavaliars.

awesome styling, stick shift, lightweight, and its not a honda. the coupe kicks ass and what other car comes with gold paint?

Weakness:

there is no aftermarket support. the 2.2 is a tough engine and it puts out as well as it can but TBI SOHC can only make so much power.

i love the handling but i need more power than even the 3.1 will give, so i am getting the MPFI DOHC 2.3 quad four out of a beretta GTZ to drop into this light car. starting with 180 horses is integra typeR spec. and with some intake and exhaust, and maybe nitrous, i would kill camaros all day

first of all the car is very nice looking. Has a lot of cup holders. The car is great on gas. It has good power for a 2.2lt. Lot of leg room for both the driver and the pasenger. Did I already say that the car is nice looking:) The car is nice looking!! Very affordable.

Weakness:

I haven't had any problems with this car so far.

Everyone has their own personal needs for a car. Some people are disapointed when they buy a chevy cavaliar because it is not the right car for them. I believe that if you look at your own personal needs and do your homework on the types of cars out there on the market, you will find the right car for you, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says because the car you purchase will meet your needs. The chevy cavaliar meets my personal needs at this time in my life and I love this car.

Great pickup, quiet ride, pretty good gas mileage, love the design. Has a peppy 2.4L twin cam engine. A fun little car to drive. Stock stereo system is ok. Great steering and breaking.

Weakness:

Too much plastic in the interior, very noisy, too many rattles. I feel every bump in the road. ABS kicks in too often and at the wrong times. Engine makes a weird banging noise sometimes when in park or stopped.

A good little car for the price. It's not a race car, so don't treat it like one. It has it's problems, but what do you expect for that price?? I personally love my car. Compared to the Integra, this car is great. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone who wants a sporty look and an average performance.
