Good looks, affordable options, peppy

Weakness:

very poor mechanical quality, costly to maintain. Very poor resale

I bought this car new and it has been nothing but trouble. I have had it 8 years and replaced the rotors and brakes 3 times with only 105K on it. Fan control settings went, Aluminum wheel glaze correded off, AC went 2x, ABS broke, Intake manifold gasket needed replacing, and currently still having cooling troubles. Suspect it may be the head gasket ($1300)
Car looks good, well adorned, but when it comes down to it, its how it runs that counts. Next time I'll buy the Camry or Accord...and still have resale when I am ready to dump it as well as peace of mind while I have it. No wonder GM is in trouble. They just don't know how to build a competitive quality car!

I don't think 2000 characters is enough to list the weaknesses of this car.

When I first saw a Malibu I was in love. It seemed so perfect! The size, the hp, just everything. So, I decided to go purchase a brand new one off the lot. That had to of been the biggest mistake ever. I've been the only owner of this car and it has never worked right. The first year I had it, it was in the shop at least 6 times. Over the years, my car has been in the shop at least 13 times. As of now, the ABS kicks in here and there for no reason, the theft-lock comes on and then I'm stranded because it won't let me start it, the heater doesn't shut off, the rear defrost doesn't work much anymore, and I'm fed up with my car. Thank god I'm trading it in tomorrow. I'm buying a Sentra.

Apparently, the engine and the knob contol which controls the heat/a/c

I love this car. At least I did for the last 5 years. When we got the car, the knob to set the fan only worked from setting 3, 4 and 5. not really a big deal. Only general maintenance was needed, brakes go fast, routers need replacing twice, a few inexpensive leaks, but nothing to worry about. This car is completey reliable. Took it out of town quite often, including this past weekend, when we were going up a pretty steep incline, the entire engine failed. (It was a rod in there that went) It only had 140,000 kms on it. So, needless to say, it is STILL out of town, in the interior, and we are home waiting for a mechanic to fix 'er up. This will probably cost THOUSANDS and we aren't sure what to do. How could such a lovely and reliable car, that never had mechanical problems, have such a huge functional problem?

Weakness:

honestly I can't think of any. Parts wear out and have to be replaced, but that is normal.

Bought this car in 2002 with 60,000 miles on it - regional insurance claim center was liquidating some fleet cars. This is son's going-to-college car; his school is 250 miles away. He's been driving it for 4 years, has almost 200,000 miles on it, and its a great vehicle. He has the oil changed every 3000 miles and had his brakes done at Midas the first time they needed replacing, so he gets free pads for life. We've replaced rotors three times, and it is in the shop now for new brakes including rotors and the master cylinder. I think that is pretty good for as many miles as he has put on it, and we all know how 18-22 yr old boys drive. Otherwise, it has a 6-cyl engine and gets between 26-28 MPG highway and about 22-24 in town. Everything still works on it - gauges, stereo, cruise control, A/C and heater, etc. The only other expenses we have encountered are tires (about every 70,000), a front-end alignment, and the occasional fuse. Even my son has said that even though he hated it at first, he thinks it was a good car for him to take to college. I don't know if I'd buy another one, but this one has far exceeded our expectations for what we paid.

I hate this car. I bought it used in 01 with less than 30,000 miles on it. In the time sinve I have replaced both front wheel bearings twice and need to do so again on left front.(At about $120 each bearing) Doors lock automatically as soon as ignition is turned on (big pain in the rear.) The only difference in the fan settings is off and max nothing in between. Had to replace head gasket at about 60k. Check engine light comes on and goes off whenever it feels like it. The in-dash cup holder on the left side, which I originally thaught was a great idea is too shallow to hold anything secure and if used will result in a hot/cold wet lap. Brakes wear out too frequently. Seatbelt only retracts about halfway most of the time (I find this to be a common problem with chevys). Run from this car. If someone offers to sell you one re-think your friendship with that person.

Power, Gas Mileage, Comfortable, Lots of Trunk Space, Good Build, Reliable, GREAT Sound System (I got 2 180 watt speakers and it ROCKS!!!),

Weakness:

Climate control knobs, Stupid Factory Warning Lights Just to get you to Bring it in so They can Charge you an arm and a leg for something that isn't broken :S

Very Very good car. I've read about 100 reviews on this site, and I can see a trend here. Everybody that has a lead foot and thinks they can do all their own maintenance has a problem. On the other hand: everybody that takes care of it and get regular maintenance done seems to think it's one of the best cars they've ever owned!

It's not perfect, and no car is. I had to change the breaks lots (but got a good set and they've lasted me). Got the 2000 model engine (170hp) and it's really peppy in town. When you're on the highway, you have to almost floor it just to maintain 100 kliks going up a hill. But that's alright, because as soon as you hit that Passing Sensor on the floor, the tranny will pop it up right away and i can get about 150 just passing one car on a flat section of road, so that's pretty good.

Obviously there's a common problem with the 1 and 2 not working on the climate control. Mine has gone too, but i can live without. Also i put a coffee in the cup holder and when i passed somebody it flew out and burnt my leg, but i just use the one by the shift stick now. My coolant light comes on once in a while, but usually just when i'm parked on a steep hill.

One thing i have to point out is that this car is a fairly big sedan, and the fuel mileage is AWESOME!! It's truely unbelieveable. I'll put 20$ in and cruise around all day.

Well it's not a perfect car, but all in all it's a very decent vehicle for somebody that's willing to take care of it. Maybe a Toyota can take a bit more abuse, but it's nowhere near as comfortable and powerful as the Malibu (not to mention the price difference).

GREAT CAR!!!

It has all the bells and whistles. Onstar,XM satellite radio, in-dash cd changer, rear DVD,Leather, faux woodgrain interior, power moonroof and rear sunroof, remote starting,ABS and traction control. Great 3.5 liter V6,this is a soprts car disguised and a modern afmily vehicle. turn off the tracion control and you can smoke the tires with no problem. The electric power steering makes it manuver like a high performance car.

Weakness:

No rear wiper.

I found this car listed on their website. It had less than 5000 miles on it. I emailed the salesman and came in the following day to look at the vehicle. the color is Sport red metallic. I traded in my gas guzzling 1999 Ford Windstar LX for it. The sales manager tried to get me to purchase an extended warranty even though the factory warranty was still good.

Passenger side front strut seems to break every other year, problems with fan when A/C is turned on

Purchased car brand new. Very pleased with performance and ride but I continue to have problems with the passenger side front strut. I've replaced it three times and need to replace it again. This time I will take it to a personal friend who says the struts have a "lifetime warranty". Funny how the local dealership never said I could purchase a product with a lifetime warranty. The first replacement was on GM (purchased extended warranty) but I've paid out big bucks to replace the remaining ones. I take good care of my car and cannot understand why I have this recurring problem. Always the passenger side front strut. Have also had problems with the fan popping off/on when A/C is running. No other major problems but don't want to buy another Malibu. Have had no problems with electric seats, electric windows. Have 114,000+ miles to date.

Braking system

Leased this car in May 2002. Replaced the brakes (complete) twice since then. Recently had to replace the bearings on the front. I am waiting to see what will go next. The car is reliable - no doubt, but there seem to be a major problem with the braking system. The ABS is awful and I don't know if it is only my car but my V-6 is a gas guzzler.
