Strength:

Nice body style and has held up well.

Weakness:

BRAKES, ABS light, door leaked, headlights leak, shaking at idle, trunk difficult to close, A/C kicks off after level 2, significant loss in gas mileage, melted wheel covers b/c brake probs and major suspension problems.

The weaknesses and worst qualities= THIS CAR!!!!!! Currently 47,000 miles on 97 Malibu. Brake probs at 3,500. New pads and turned rotors at 3,500, 12,000, 21,000 and 32,000. Rotors replaced, convienantly, after the warranty ran out. Rear drums replaced, brake lines flushed. Broken steering rods. Leaks steering fluid. Early, 325mi/tank, current 250mi/tank. Creaking, squeaking, grinding & other adjectives describe this vehicle's suspension and brake problems. Paint is peeling on front bumper. I would not wish this car on my worst enemy. I am trading it in now before I need to replace my fuel injection system. Sorry for the soul that buys it......... TELL EVEYONE YOU KNOW NOT TO BUY THIS HORRENDOUS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comfortable and I love the color. Radio sounds good and I love my sunroof.

Weakness:

EVERYTHING ELSE - ESPECIALLY THE BRAKES

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - NEVER EVER BUY A CHEVY MALIBU!!!!! We are at 28,000 miles, 3 sets of brake pads and rotors. An engine knocking noise that "must be in my mind" and starts only when it wants to. GM says, "we will note it and see if there seems to be a pattern". I told them to check out this website and quit selling _ _ _ _ _ _ cars.

Talk about feeling "had"!!!!!!!!!

Brakes!!!! Fan doesn't work on 1 and 2

The brakes have been a problem since the day we picked it up. Every time you use them they vibrate. At 80,000 km. we're on our 4th set of brake pads. GM Customer Service rep maintains this is "normal wear and tear" on ALL car manufacturers and blamed the Canadian Government for forcing them to use metal brake pads. I took the car to an independant mechanic who showed me the reason for the 'premature wear and tear' is because of the design of the brakes. There is almost no space between the pads and the discs. As for the fan problem, even though the dealer admitted that it's a known Malibu problem we still have to pay the deductible on our extended warranty to fix it. The bumpers are cheap plastic (a common problem in many cars) and crack if you touch them in the cold weather, which is half the year. It's too bad GM won't admit they're wrong because I'm not going back at the end of the lease for the simple reason they didn't hold themselves accountable and have told the consumer this is all normal wear and tear. I guess it is normal -- normal for the Malibu.

Can I just say everything to make it easier to type

Bought in March 2000. At 5000 miles had the brakes worked on new rotors and pads. About 1500 mile later same problem but, I mentioned the lemon law and repurchase to GM and my dealer guess what this time they cannot find anything wrong with the brakes. I have had problems with the controll panel for comfort control and, remote keyless entry. SO PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS CAR.

handles good, great gas mileage, 25-31 miles to a gallon

Weakness:

won't start, clicking noise, just found out that the intake gasket is leaking.. as of this morn.. brakes kinda squeal when slowing down

well, for starters, hubby asked service tech here about the intake gasket he has heard that they were problems, and the tech said that he had not heard of any problem,, the reason why we took the car there this morn, is it is leaking from underneath, and we had been smelling something like gas fumes while starting the car or either driving it down the road..
I am mad at the fact that when we took the car this morning they told us about yes it does have a PROBLEM with this car. I didnt want to buy another vehicle, didn't want any payments, my car would have been paid for this month.. I just want ya'll to beware of the air bags. My mouth got injured due to it, nearly broke my jaw from it,, I am 5'4" anyways i am rabbling on about it..
I enjoy this vehicle if only I had known about this website alot sooner than now... we will be talking to someone about this in the morn.. thought i would let ya'll know..

Strength:

good car for the money

Weakness:

When I start the 3100 motor in the morning it has a bad lifter tap to it. I bought it to chevy 3 times and they tell me it is a common problem with this motor, and will not fix it because there is a bulletin out that tells them not to. They tell me the tap is within manufactors tolerances. I asked them to show me this bulletin but they couldn't find it, nor can I

Like the car but not happy with the service department

Strength:

The only stregth tht I can think of is that my steroe sound good

Weakness:

Breakes, heater motor, elcetrical problems, headlights, water in spare tire holder, and to many more to list

My car has spent more time in the shop than you can believe. The breaks were replaced after we bought this lemon in 5/99. This was a used car but when they did the break job they replaced faulty rotors rebuilt the cakipers and new front break pads. The breaks have always made noise & when you take it to the shop they say that there is nothing wrong. The light sockets for the brake lights have been replaced 2 times on the passengers side and needs to be done on the drivers side. But of course there is not an electrcail problem. i have had the heater blower motor replaced and or fixed 6 diffrent times. I tell everyone that I know NEVER to but a Malibu. You can not get out of them as the dealers will not give you even close to what is owed as they do not want them back. I do not think I will buy a nother Chevy car. When I contacted GM they stated that they have never hedard of the problems that I have. Sound like a line of--------- to me.

Strength:

Gauges are easy to read, switches are all easy to reach.

Weakness:

Brakes: This car eats brakes pads for a snack, and rotors for dinner. The car goes through tires at an ungodly pace as well.

This is painfull for me to write as a long time GM fan as well as someone who is elligble for an employee discount, I cannot reccomend this product to anyone! Within 12,000 miles the rotors had to be turned because they warped. Since than the car has managed to gobble down 3 sets of LIFETIME garunteed brake pads! I've also had to have the anti lock brake sensors changed under warranty. The check engine light is on now and than, not sure why. The visor has broke on the driver side, so has the manual window roll down lever. I had to change ALL of the lights on the passenger side tail light assembly, as well as glue the rubber trim back in. The suspension is always making noises and moans while turning. The brakes always make noise.

I was aloted a Toyota Camary one day as a company car. It was quite, smooth and powerful. Everything my Malibu was not. Spend the extra cash and buy an Accord or a Camry. In the long run you will be alot happier. I can't trade mine in because I owe more than its worth and I've made double payments several times! The second I am rightside to on the payments (which will be the day I pay it off I suspect) I am trading it in. I pray you don't get stuck with mine if you buy mine used.

Brakes / Rotors

I Purchased my Chevy Malibu Nov of 1999 after owning a Honda Civic for seven years. At first it was great as I received the car BRAND NEW for $16500 fully loaded. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. In less than 24K miles, my front rotors have both WARPED 3 times, most recently only 2K miles from the last replacement. Radio burnt out and was replaced one and currently it makes a ticking noise for the 1st minute or so the car is running.
Washington State has a great lemon law and GM recently agreed to buy the car back from me avoiding the lemon law. Yesterday I purchased a 2001 Honda Civic Coup...doesn't quite have the smooth ride, but it will last me 120K miles with VERY LITTLE maintenance and I know it is a damn good car for the extra money. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. I WILL NEVER BUY A GM PRODUCT AGAIN. WHAT AN EMBARASSMENT when even Korean auto makers (Hyundai) are kicking our "A S S E S!" WHY CAN'T DETROIT FIGURE IT OUT?

Brakes,Gas cap and touchy Ignition switch (so far)

Brakes(whenever it is damp or wet, they make a grinding noise) Ignition( I have alot of keys and when I go over certain bumps or potholes the car turns off..It turns out that when I hit the bump my keys turn the ignition off.First time in 20 years and 20 cars that has happened. GAS CAP...where do I begin. When I leave the gas station,I have this problem for a few days until I take the gas cap on and off a dozen times...It seems to be an emissions thing...My wife has a 2001 also and this morning she called Nemet Chevrolet and told them that the check engine light came on. According to the manual(leased)we are supposed to take it right in because the problem could get worse. The service tech there(oxymoron)said that he couldn't see her for 4 days..so much for going by the book... then he said that probably only had to do with the gas cap. After the third day the light went off??? who knows...Getting tired...she is going foreign next time..lucky that we only leased these.
