Strength:

Extremely reliable. I just got into a wreck a couple of days ago with a 6 pt bull elk, of which I received a broken neck. The car launched the animal 150 ft into a hayfield and I am still standing. The car hit the thing at 70 mph, and it still runs, and my husband and I are still alive!! This car never presented me with any problems, and I miss it greatly. I had it for three years, and it's gotten me through thick and thin. I would highly recommend this car to anyone!!!

Weakness:

none, really. Its not the fastest car in the world, but thats a small price to pay.

I loved this car to death. I've had a number of cars in the past, and this one was by far the best I've ever had. Im looking for another one.

Strength:

Super reliable. Plus we have a hitch and it can haul a fully enclosed snowmobile trailer. Just right for a family of 4.

Weakness:

After 7 years, it has a bit of rust at the bottom.

Our Prizm still gets 35 MPG with NO major mechanical problems ever. We gave it a full tune up at 75,000. Currently has 120,000.
Too bad they stopped making them. Our 15 year old son will inherit it in 2010.

Engine, oil consumption - do not buy used 2001 Prizms

Very pleased with vehicle until it started "drinking oil". Found at least 50 other 2001 Prizms via the internet that had similar problems. I have changed oil ever 3000 miles and despite this, the engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Engine repair costs match or exceed current value of vehicle. I bought this car due to it being produced on same assembly line as Toyota with an expectation of quality. I will not buy Toyota or joint Toyota - GM produced products again.

acceleration, gas mileage, smooth ride

Weakness:

drivers side window off track, plastic interior parts ripping, burning oil

Ok, I wrote a review before on my Chevy Prizm but I forgot my username and password. Anyways, I bought my car in 1999 and it only had 24,000 miles on it, well I still have my baby and she now has 243,000 wonderful miles. I thought the alternator was going on my car but come to find out I had a lot of corrosion on my battery. The starter had to replaced which is the main work under the hood that had to be done. My drivers side window is off track, but I'm a pro at rolling it up now and the interior plastic parts are starting to tear, but that's easy to deal with too, and the paint is fading a little on the drivers side. I will say the car burns oil like crazy, but it rides just as good as it did the first day I bout it. The check engine light has been on for the past few years, but there are a lot of cars out there that have that problem. My mechanic said that as long as I keep the oil changed and keep oil in it that I could drive that car around for a couple more years. I LOVE MY PRIZM and I will drive it until it won't run anymore.

Fast car, great acceleration, very good gas mileage, Awesome sound system,

Weakness:

Cheap interior plastic, driver side window is a little off track, check engine light. (common O2 sensor problem)

I have had this car going on a year now. When the car was given to me. It had 120k Miles on it. now at 180k miles car still holding strong. Definily like this car. And am looking to completely restore it. when i got the car, the power steering pressure hose had a leak. and the ac and heater do not work. (free car, who can complain :)....)It took 30 mins to change the hose. very simple. not a big deal. not sure whats wrong with the ac and heater, checked all fuses and relays. Im thinking it may be the actual insterment cluster panel.

Strength:

Good gas mileage. Small size is easy to park. Reliable. Inexpensive.

Weakness:

Wind noise. Engine wearing out, I was told is common in Prizm and Corolla type cars.

Great little car. I bought it with 66k miles and 4 years later it has 127k. It has started burning oil, mechanic said engine is wearing out. Gas tank rusted through and had to be replaced. Only other repairs were spark plug wiring that was failing and blower resistor. Zippy car with great gas mileage. Back seats are pretty tight and trunk space is a little small, but the back seats fold down to open the trunk space. Nice feature is open-from-the-inside gas tank door. Decent wind noise on the highway, but a comfortable ride. Handles well in the snow--sometimes I'm surprised what I haven't gotten stuck in. The radio buttons always seem to get hot on longer rides. If I weren't looking for a different type of vehicle, I'd definitely get another Prizm.

Strength:

gas mileage, acceleration, longevity of engine

Weakness:

driver side window, alternator(199,000 mi)

I bought my chevy prizm used in 1999 after I graduated from high school. I have enjoyed my car. When I bought the car it only had 26,000 miles on it. I haven't had any problems with my car until now. My Prizm now has 199,210 miles on it and my alternator has just gone out on it. I see this as only a small problem since I haven't had any other things go wrong with my car. The check engine light stays on but that goes for almost any car nowdays. If you disconnect the battery for a few minutes the check engine light will stay off for several months. Also my driver side window is a little off track but I have no problems rolling it up. Of course the tires and brakes needed to be replaced but thats on any car. It's great on gas and the acceleration is wonderful. I had a chance to test drive both the Prizm and Corolla before I purchased my car in 1999. They are the exact same car, but something about my Prizm just stole my heart. I wouldn't get rid of my Prizm for nothing in the world. So after the alternator is fixed it will be like new all over again.

dependability, gas mileage

Weakness:

interior plastic is cheap

I purchased this car new in February 1994 and have just rolled over 148,000 miles. It has been the most dependable car I have owned. I have replace the alternator and the driver side window motor - nothing else except routine maintenance. It is beginning to leak some oil and this worries me, but when I get a chance to determine the origin of the leak (which is less that a half quart per oil change) I hope to keep this car for a long time. I have my fingers crossed that I can get 175,000 miles out of this car and my highest hope of getting 200,000 miles. The engine runs as smoothly and quietly as the day I bought it. The heat and A/C still go strong and the ride is great. I drive 60 miles per day and the mileage runs about 32 mpg. The car has never stranded me and I feel comfortable taking long trips without worry of breaking down. This car goes and goes and goes and goes. It is also great in snow and ice. I bought a 1999 Chevy venture van new and will probably have the Prizm long after the van bites the dust.

Strength:

Great gas milage. Smooth riding. Starts right off.

Weakness:

I'm on my 3rd battery. Best for shorter people. After multiple uses, CD repeat button quits. Sadly, no longer made.

Great handling car, rides smoothly, like it thinks it is a bigger car than it really is. This is my first car that I've ever bought. I rarely have to go fill-up the tank and it has never had major work on it yet. I bought it used. If you are a college student or a person who is just starting out in life and want a dependable ride, that's not expensive, and easy to keep get the Prizm. Body by Chevy, engine etc. by Toyota. You can really tell with the gas milage and handling that it is a Toyota in Chevy clothes. I have one with all the bells and whistles on it. I feel safe driving the car. The seats have to be pushed all the way back for my tall friends but I'm just 5'2" so it is a comfortable car. My only complaint thus far is that I'm now on my 3rd battery, I had the one it came with replaced, and have now had to replace the replacement.

Strength:

lots of torque in 1st and 2nd super reliable motor descent gas milage great parts (brakes, shocks, struts in the rear) excellent in the snow cheap price

Weakness:

haven't come across any yet in 98,000 mi.

I have owned a 98 chevy/toyota prizm for about a year and a half. This car is great, I an 24 and have owned 3 cars since this one from a 94 ss s10, a 94 probe gt (which I had the most problems with) and a 94 grand am gt. Believe it or not with the 5 speed manual this car keeps up with the past cars, if not a tiny bit quiker, giving all the past cars were automatic. The 1st gear is really short with all torque up to about 35 mph redline, then 2nd sometimes tears up the tires at the right shift (rarely) then its not too bad with 3rd and 4th and then 5th is just for cruising over 45 mph. I know talking about this car like it's a race car is a little foolish, but I'm quite impressed with the underated toyota 1.8 liter motor, giving that with all of the ragging on you can imagine to the motor it still runs like new at 93,000 mi. The only thing I have changed on the car is the oil. Other than that I have put on an arospeed exaust system, konig rims, dunlop tires, and dropped the front end 4 inches, which makes it corner pretty well. It may be dumb to modifications to a car like this, but you would be suprised to see how many people hook up corolla's on cardomain.com which is the same car down to the rubber. I took the inside of this car apart and put it back together to put dynamat in and the only thing that isn't made by toyota is the glove box and the trunk. I'm not going to do anything else to this car but drive it till it dies which hopefully isn't for a long time. Also this is pretty much the 1st winter I've driven in with the car, and suprisingly is an 8 out of 10 scale. The probe gt is also great in the snow, but my grand am was even worse than my s10 (don't know why). I'd say overall this car is great since it only retails at about $11,000 brand new, and is very light, also is very easy to bury the needle at 110 mph, I'm sure with enough concrete it will hit 130 mph, but thats not what the car was designed for unlike getting groceries which is what the car does best.
