Strength:

Gas mileage, but the repair costs FAR outweighed the savings in gas!

Weakness:

Everything! Transmission was going bad from day one, radiator leaked, blew a few head gaskets in only a month, mechanic told me previous owner beat the car... so maybe it was just my car?

Horrible little car. Worst waste of money ever! Real P.O.S.!!!!!!

Strength:

Good gas mileage and low maintenance costs.

Weakness:

None found yet.

I bought my Neon used (36000 miles) and I have learned that the best way to keep my car out of the shop is regular maintenance.

I do regular oil changes every 3000 miles with fluid checks and tuneups on a regular basis and I can confidently say that my car has not given me any heart aches.

I have had to replace the timing belt at manufacturer recommended intervals and a hose that froze this past winter. Thats not bad for a 6yr old car.

I would buy a Neon again. It is now at (120000+ miles) and still going strong.

Weakness:

Everything from timing belt to a/c.

The worst car I have ever owned. The previous owners replaced the sterring when it was two years old! Then after six months of owning it it went bad. The timing belt broke last week. $500.00 and the auto shop couldn't get it to start. Why? Valves are gone! The quote to fix it is $1,600! The a/c ran out from a leak. Every review in a foum I read all said the same thing! Not only is this car a lemon it's a nightmare! Engine light is always on due to some cooling device that is defective. I have read over three hundred complaints that are like mine. Yet there was never a RECALL! If you live in Canada you can have it fixed for free! That is because the Government there looks out for the people. This is by far the worst car on the road. It was a scam of a car. Many people have been screwed. I'd never buy another car by that maker! EVER!

Don't believe me? Read and weep!

Everything!
We have replaced: transmission, engine, axils, brakes, radiator, wiring, etc.....

We paid only 1000.00 for a 96 neon a few years ago for our daughter to go to college.Thought we got the deal of the century! Ha Ha Three years later and over 5 grand in parts, I must reconsider. I am a licensed aircraft mechanic and former car mechanic, so I have done all of the work myself! This piece of crap could have potentially cost me 7 grand.. if I didn't do all of the back breaking work myself. I have never seen or worked on a piece of machinery that was put together in such a dumb @#$#@ backwards way! I don't even want to talk about the scars left on my hands and arms from trying to cram my hands in spaces not big enough for an ant to crawl through! I'd like to meet the engineers of this piece of junk!
My daughter has been stranded on numerous occasions... so I guess I should add towing costs as well!!
My advice as an experienced mechanic is simply this: Never buy a Neon, actually, Never buy anything built by Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth!! And I thought Ford was bad!

Strength:

Very good power compared to other economy cars in the same class and since resale value is horrible, you can find these very cheap.

Weakness:

Head gaskets-will blow on you unless they have already been replaced with MLS (mutil layer steel gasket) unit. These cars do not take abuse well. Differential had pin that would slide out and destroy your transmission. Not fun or safe! Early models would eat brake pads. Electrical demons abound. Factory wiring harness in engine compartment rubs against various areas in engine compartment causing nightmare intermittant problems for yourself and mechanics.

I've been around these cars since they first came out. If your going to read a review from start to finish. READ THIS ONE. The first generation Dodge Neon 1995-1999 is not suitable for young individuals going to high school or college. Do not think about this vehicle unless you have a decent automotive mind and can do your own work or you will be paying $$$ for constant repairs. If you want to learn how to work on cars or know your way around a car then these I would not tell you to stay away-Otherwise your asking for it. Many a mechanic have been made richer from these cars.

Strength:

Reliable, comfortable simple car.

Weakness:

Paint Peeling, Lags with 3-Speed Automatic, Sits Really Low; Easy to Scrape the bumper.

I have had great luck with my Bright White Neon Sedan. I had a great deal of work done to her about 3 years ago at the local Firestone store and The Jeep Dealership. Timing belt replaced, Motor Mount, Power Steering Bracket, Brakes, Tires & Head Gasket as well as a Major Tune-up at that time. This car has been very reliable and sort of an "Old Faithful". I would definately do another neon, But the next one will be a 5-Speed. The 3-Speed Automatic really lags this car down in power. I never would have given a Dodge/Chyrsler/Plymouth product a second look untill this one. I did have to replace the rear tail-light seals that were very reasonalbe from the Local Dodge dealership to fix a water leak in the trunk. I have replaced the battery once, which this car the dash goes "Banana's" when the battery goes. That is the only time that this car has failed to start. Other than normal maintenance, My partner and I have not sunk a Great deal of money into this car. The car is very comfrtable to me and rides and handles really well. One bad thing is it sits extremely too low and sometimes is hard to get in and out of and is easy to scrape the bumper even with the factory 14" wheels. My Neon always gets me where I need to go reliably & comfortable.

Strength:

The car runs great and the body is beautiful. EXCEPT the paint.

Weakness:

1996 Dodge products have a very bad problem with their paint. It falls off without any causes. I would not purchase another Dodge unless I got a garantee that the paint would last for 10 years or at least would not simply fall off. Otherwise I loved the car.

I have had and maintained my White Neon for 5+ years now. The car runs great. I purchased the car with 50,000 original miles and it is now at 134,000 miles at 84,000 I had the rear main seal replaced as I was advised this is one of the first things to go on the car. The original extended warrantee expired and I had informed the folks at Dodge that the paint was starting to peel off on the top at that time it was about the size of a dessert plate. No rust No paint. Now an entire side of the roof is paintless and rusting. The paint on the sides of the car is also flying off. I don't drive the car excessivily or anything out of the ordinary wear and tear of everyday life. I am frustrated with the way the company had decided to or rather not to deal with the situation.

Strength:

Fuel mileage, handling

Weakness:

Trunk leaks water, water enters the drivers window when it rains

I bought this car for it's high gas mileage. I was lucky that the dealer had just replaced the head gasket prior to my taking delivery. I've had to replace the tires (expected) but other than that, it has been pretty reliable. The A/C went out the first summer I owned it but I can live without it. Just today, my check engine light came on and I've yet to pull teh codes but all in all, I feel it has been a good choice for me.

Strength:

This is actually a pretty comfortable car for traveling... I guess... if you can be comfortable not knowing what could possibly go wrong next. I guess it's served it's purpose though, it's gotten me where I needed to go for the past 2 years. The gas milage is decent... if you can calculate it at all with a broken gas gauge.

Weakness:

I think I pointed that out.

When it rains, it pours! This saying didn't have much meaning to me until I bought my second neon. (The first one went downhill *literally* by user default) I paid 8000 for this car and have put nearly that much back into it. It was decent for the first few months. My air conditioner quit working after 4 months, and it wasn't the freeon. It's a small electical piece that costs nearly 200 to replace, not mentioning the labor!! I have had to replace my brakes (300$) TWICE. That's brake pads, and rotors... BOTH of my rear hub bearings have had to be replaced, (nearly 400$ for the both of them) My CD changer broke after 5 months, which, with my exceptional intelligence (exceptional? HAH! I bought a neon.. TWICE) I managed to fix on my own... repeatedly. A hose was cracked after a year and a half that was leaking on my spark plugs, another 180$ In two years, I've gone through 3 sets of tires... and honestly I'm not that hard on them. My year of neon has to have special order tires, roughly 400$ for the set, so I didn't have much to choose from. My window hangers in the back rattled off one at a time (this is kind of funny actually) for what reason I don't know, just crappy assembly I guess, but I put those back on myself. My gas gauge is broken. A friend told me I probably had gas in my float... HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN??? Anyways, when I fill the car up, it only goes to half-tank... so I just wing-it, and assume that when it's at a quarter of a tank, I actually have half a tank... not so safe.. what if I run out of gas?? There is no low fuel light, so... My headlights are fogged up and my bright lights are noticably dimmer than my husbands dim lights on his pickup. My passenger window gets off track now and then and we have to pop it back in. haha... i could go on for days... It's not the most aerodynamic car either. If I have my window just cracked and it's raining, water builds up above the window and drips in and soaks my arm rest...

I had a 99 dodge neon sport. I can't complain, I really adored this car, but I only had it two months, and then I rolled and totaled it, so it didn't really have time to go wrong. I would not buy another neon... ever! And I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone.
