Model Reviewed: Neon 2dr ACR

Strength:

The ACR model handles very well and the short ratio 5 speed trans & 150hp dohc engine provide good acceleration in every gear, including 5th.
Fun to drive, economical to run and maintain.

Weakness:

The engine is coarse and a little loud at highway speeds
Head gasket started leaking at 46000km
Interior plastics are hard with some rough edges, and mold lines
Ride is a little firm but you quickly get used to it (see summary)

For the price it would be difficult to find a stock compact that handles as well and is as quick as this little car is.
The car is a sleeper, no wings, decals or chrome tailpipes, just good performance.
The Koni struts have adjustable rebound so you can alter the trade off between handling/ride when you want.
Low cost and fun to drive, but look elsewhere for sophistication or good resale value.
Very good value.
Overall rating would be better if the car had better NVH suppression and higher build quality.

I love this little car. It handles very well. It "fits" me. I am short.

Weakness:

Had to replace( under extended warranty) head gasket, brakes seem to be
a problem. Very squeaky. Blind spots and no right side mirror.

I would recommend this little car. It is fun to drive. I haven't had many
problems. Purchased it used with 32,000 mi, now has 70,000. After having
a Hyundai that cost me every time I took it on the road, this car is a
real treat.

Everything is great about it! Handling is the best. I could probably drive with my pinky. Power is good, too. Gas mileage. Room. Comfortable. EVERYTHING.

Nothing I can think of

Yes, I would recommend it. I bought it new back in summer of 1995 with about 700 on the odometer. I now have around 85,000 on this baby with no problems except the head gasket(covered under warranty). I have properly mantained it, kept it clean, etc. It has served me well.

Model Reviewed: sport and 98 R/T

Strength:

The sport had good power and handling. The R/T blows the sport away in power and handling. I Can take just about anything on the road that does not have a V8 or turbo in it.

Weakness:

There is a lot of wind and engine noise (I personaly love the engine noise, but most people don't). I've had lots of small things go wrong with the car they have all been fixed under the warenty. I'm at aboiut 45,00 miles on the R/T and I am have my first mechanical problem. my suspension makes a lreally bad sound when I am going throuogh turns. and my engine is makingg akknocking sound before the engine gets warmed up.

I loved my 95 neon sport some much that I traded it in for a 98 Noen R/T. What does that say. I love the Neon. It is the best car that i have ever owned, or had the pleasure of driving on a consistant basis. I think the car is the best car in its class for the money. Most other cars that I even looked at (Cavalier Z24, and Sunfire GT) when I went shopping for the Neon R/T wereover priced compared to the Neon and did not even get as good of performance marked.

Model Reviewed: Dodge Neon

Strength:

Roomy (for a small car), fast (for a compact sedan), reasonably good gas mileage, comfortable ride, great handling, unique looks, very competitive price.

Weakness:

So far, the only problem I've had is the exhaust donut had to be replaced (under warranty), however, I've heard that the head gasket is a notorious weak point on the 95-98 model years (it was supposedly fixed early in the 99 model year). Other than that, the engine is a bit noisy and unrefined, the headlights aren't very bright, the rear windows only roll about half way down (and they don't have power controls, even if the car is equipped with power windows), and the frameless doors make for some additional wind noise at highway speeds. Fifth gear on the manual is just a bit too tall, and necessitates a down-shift for any passing or hill-climbing (but there's plenty of power on tap if you keep the engine in its powerband).

I've only had the car for 2.5 years, but so far it's been great. I love the five-speed transmission and the powerful engine - this car is loads of fun to drive. It's also quite roomy and gas mileage is decent (even with a heavy foot like mine). I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small four-door sedan for city or highway use - just check the head gasket very carefully before buying (or better yet, try to get one with the redesigned MLS gasket). If you like driving, stay away from the automatic - it's a three-speed, and it sucks the life out of the car (I drove an automatic rental for a week a couple of years ago).

Strength:

Has an appealing look...

Weakness:

Engine, 3 spd auto transmission, noise at high speeds, not very economical on gas

I bought this car on 9/7/00 (Thursday) from Magic Auto Center of Arleta (CA). The car's engine died on me 9/8/00! The next day! I was only able to put 84 miles on it. I don't think the neon's are that bad, but I think it was more of the dealer's side since he told me that he had the car serviced the day before. If it was really serviced, then the mechanic would've told him that the engine coolant cap was missing!

While it was still running, it was great-- it would accelerate fast and would actually go up hills without any slowdowns. I think it was just a problem with the dealer. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please email me at wastingspace@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Strength:

-Roomy
-Comfortable
-Powerful(for a small car)
-radio is great
-looks nice

Weakness:

-The inside plastics look and feel very cheap
-Noise is annoying at times
-The 3-Speed Auto is in need of a 4th gear
-Hills are a struggle
-Base model had cheap-looking gray bumpers. Chrysler could have done better than these ugly bumpers.
-Guzzles gas terribly. Averaged 18-20 mpg on highway.
-Tried passing a car going up a small hill, which took forever. The hill wasn't even steep and the Neon was afraid to go over 70 to pass. Don't even try to pass a car up a hill!

The Neon was nice. I used it for about 1,300 miles before trading it in for a Chevy Blazer. Of course I will not compare it to the Blazer. One thing I hated about the Neon was the ugly bumpers. I eventually ignored them, but they gave the car a cheap look. Also, while going through a drive-thru, I noticed how low the car actually is. I was behind a Chevy Lumina and in front of a Ford F-150. The Lumina was much higher than I was. The truck's bumper was at the top of the trunk. If I hit any car head-on, the Neon would simply be demolished. Its plain and simple. I never heard any wind noise or anything like others have. Framed windows would have been better. When you roll the windows down and shut the doors hard, they rattle and shake. If you want a car that probably isn't good in a crash, guzzles gas, and feels cheap then get it. It is better than a Cavalier, Sunfire, or Escort though. Chrysler could have made the Neons nicer!

The Sentra and Accord had power everything, had a touch of class, and weren't so cheaply made. The Neon feels cheap, especially because I can see some kind of dark foam under the steering wheel and indside the front doors I can see the so called "impact padding" at the bottom of the door.

There is alot you can do with these cars as far as making them SUPER FAST. Even though I own a 240sx, my cousin and I often trade and with the upgrades of a air intake, Eibach Springs, intercoolers, and a exhaust this little car is kicking ass with cars in its own league and contends with cars that are supposed to be alot faster (factory)

Model Reviewed: /Dodge Neon Sport

Strength:

* Decent engine power (4-cyl, 2.0L).
* Good gas mileage for the power.
* Nice style
* Higher power alternator for demanding applications.
* Fold down back seat
* Cruise Control on steering wheel
* Holds up to some abuse
* Nice instrument package (including tach)
* Good A/C

Weakness:

* Fogs up easily in cold or rain.
* Blind spots
* 3-speed auto transmition causes engine to rev too high on the freeway, also not good on gas for extended trips driving over 60MPH.
* Handling not good in very heavy rain.
* Engine is noisy.
* Wind noise was a problem with stock audio, but my 600 Watt system fixed that.
* The window tinting makes it hard to resolve detail in the rear view mirror.

I had paid probably a little too much for the car, over $11,000.

I am impressed with the acceleration. It performs well on busy roads. And the gas mileage on the Neon's 2.0L is better than the engine on my Toyota CE 1.6L.

The window tinting and the blind spots made visibility difficult on the sides and the back. Also, cold or rainy weather absolutely requires that the defroster (front and back) be run. Otherwise, the windows fog easily.

The alternater is able to power my 600 watt audio system without complaint. The alternator in my friends Hyndai Elantra fails to deliver enough power with even smaller loads.

The engine and frame are noisy. Sometimes the engine is "hard starting" when it is cold, and tend to vary slightly in RPMs. The car squeaks when the gears are changed between Reverse, Neutral and Drive.

Care must also be exercised on uneven terrain. The suspension is quite stiff.

I have about 52,000 miles on mine. The only problem I have had--so far--was an oil leak between the engine and transmition. This was fixed by an oil additive, and is no longer an issue. The service man indicated that this was probably due to the long distance and fast highway driving. The engine RPMS at freeway speed run me about 3,000 to 3,600, due to the 3-speed auto transmition.

I would recommend this car to those that drive short distances on surface roads. I would not recommend it for long distance commute at high speed.

Compared to a 97 Toyota Corola-CE:

The engine on the Neon is louder and runs rougher than the Toyota. However, the power from the Neon's engine is much better. Also despite the larger displacement, I got better gas mileage on the Neon than the Toyota.

The sound system that came with the Toyota was better than the stock system in the Neon.

The air conditioning is magnitudes better than my friend's '99 Hyndai Elantra. His never get's cool. Mine can get a little too cool, even with an outside temperature of 93+, and the strong Florida sun.
